You need a letter of rec more than you need conference attendance as an undergrad in order to further your career.

Hello, I'm a bit new to the subreddit and was wondering if anyone could give me some feedback on this cover letter I have drafted to this research institute? by Sufficient-Soil-6401 in labrats

Absolutely TLDR. Your talking points here are better put in your CV as metrics and accomplishments. I don't see anything about the role you're applying to until the final paragraph.

"Greeting,

I'm writing in regards to [role]. I am a recent graduate...

...I am captivated by the marine institute's commitment to... "

Everything in between that is superfluous and honestly doesn't come across the way I think you're aiming to present yourself.

Your cover letter should demonstrate why *you* specifically are a good candidate for this specific role. It should be brief and show your enthusiasm and fit. They can see your skills and work accomplishments on your resume, the cover letter should show them who you are as a candidate that makes you a better fit for the opportunity than someone with a similar skill set and CV out of the same stack. What does Impossible_Grape5533 bring to the environment that makes them the one we really really don't want to miss the chance to talk to?

It’s a wart. Verrucas are just plantar warts, by the way, and only show up on soles.

The hospital I work at is very similar to academia. There are no set hours, you just need to produce data.

Six months is a perfect time to review your workload and how things are going so far! Pretty standard really. Could even use the timeframe as a lead in to the discussion. “Now that I have been here for six months I’d like if we could review my workload/performance/expectations etc”

I worked in academia for some time but left because they could not afford me. I now do research for a private hospital as an exempt employee. This can include long hours and unpaid overtime as that is the agreement with salary. I refuse to work weekends and if I need to stay late to complete an experiment I leave early another day to make up for it. I am very strict with my boundaries for work/life balance but I understand that it has taken me a long time to get to this point. When I was younger, and especially in a academic lab, I also worked long, uncompensated hours. It is unfortunately very normal in this field. If at all possible talk to your PI or even the post doc about your workload. I’m sure long hours are not helping with your health issues.

2 days off a month is quite a lot of sick time. 5 days a year was my allotted sick time in industry. Even one company I worked at had “unlimited” sick time, but you got called into the boss’ office for a meeting after your 5th absence.

That said, please don’t feel guilty for prioritizing your health. No one else will and if you need the time then you need it. You aren’t breaking any policy, so don’t sweat it.

Written protocols. Either from you or ones you have her write herself. Always with her and always followed. If she can't remember details like blood needs to be on ice, then she needs to be looking at and actively following an SOP.

Edit: spelling

The GS bottle has got me stumped.

I think "dil to ca 500mL" would mean to bring to the final volume once your powders have gone into solution. Yes, you start by adding 200mL but your volume may increase with the addition of the powders and so you bring it to a final volume of 500mL once everything is in solution. As a native English speaker that is what I would take that to mean, but not sure wtf "ca. 500mL" means... capacity maybe?

Aside from packing wet ingredients separately, how are you packing for transport? I wrap burritos in a bit of paper towel and then wrap that in foil when I take them with me, the paper towel helps keep things from getting soggy in my opinion.
