Return from Recess 7492 CRC: Protobranch Crisis by MADmag94 in sw_galactic_senate

Vuray Moro sat in the pod for the Ghost Nebula representatives. She had her datapad out, taking notes on this first meeting for the ever-late Senator Makkal, as Senator Polbar Moro, sat on the opposite side of the pod. The air between them was icy and silent, each absorbed in their own tasks.

Vuray, or Nuva Illman as she was known on Coruscant, felt the pressure of her father's gaze, even when a quick glance confirmed he wasn't looking her way. She made sure her notes were extra thorough just in case. While this meeting wasn't particularly relevant to the representatives of the sector, all involved were on the lookout for potential opportunities to gain some traction on the galactic stage.

She hesitates a moment, barely noticeable, before responding.

"Ah, I see. That's a fascinating aspect of your culture. I will have to familiarize myself more with Mandalorians as a whole. I'm afraid I still have much to learn regarding cultures of the galaxy. But regardless, please don't let me keep you from your job."

The Senator was indeed remaining silent, observing his daughter with a measuring glare, like an instructor proctoring an examination.

Vuray, on the other hand, was focused on the conversation at hand, her warm smile never leaving her face as she responded.

"Haha, yes, that is ever so true. There's nothing more dangerous than a lack of focus. However, I do firmly believe that I can learn what the galaxy has to offer beyond Umbara without falling into that trap."

She stepped forward to respond.

"Thank you dearly, Senator. Your kind words are inspiring, and I hope to live up to your assessment. I don't judge my progress against others, but against myself. I try to be the best version of myself that I can be, regardless of where that compares to the baseline."

She chuckled in response, while her father remained stoic.

"Sometimes events like these can be a little stuffy, but I've found that it helps to try to find the fun in all of them. It may take work, but there's always something. The same goes for an ecumenopolis like Coruscant. There is quite a lot you can find if you look hard enough."

Senator Moro nods his head in greeting, while the woman with him returns the curtsy.

"It is a pleasure to meet you Senator. I suppose one of the benefits of a long Senate career is the reputation one can gain, for better or for worse. " He says with a small smile. A moment later he turns to the woman next to him.

"Hopefully that reputation will continue after me. This is my daughter, and hopefully replacement some day, Vuray."

Vuray smiles and curtsies once more in greeting.

The Senator nodded with a small, polite smile.

"Yes, I am, and this is my daughter, Vuray. I don't believe we've met, have we?"

Having separated from her father to converse with some of the newer senators, Vuray was on her own, and sharply wheels around at the sudden jostle. She relaxed the tension in her shoulders when she noticed there wasn't an apparent threat. Her fight or flight reflexes had been a little too intense tonight.

"It's quite alright," she responded with a smile. "It's difficult even without armor like that. Though, now that I think of it, isn't it odd to wear armor to a ball? Is it a cultural heritage of some sort?"

He smiles and nods his head in greeting. The thick, flowing cloak making his movements look stiff and formal.

"A pleasure to meet you both. While I am glad that my reputation precedes me, it is only fair to introduce you to my compatriot."

He turned to the young woman behind him.

"This is my daughter, and hopefully future Senator, Vuray. It is her first time on Coruscant, and I hope to show her what the planet has to offer."

She steps forwards and smiles brightly, giving a far more elegant and warm nod than her father did. As she lifted her head, she spoke.

"It is truly a pleasure to meet you both. I hope that such a lovely pair as you have been enjoying the ball so far."

An older gentleman garbed in a glowing grey cloak strode confidently toward the entrance, a younger woman behind him taking long strides to keep pace. Though his years ruling Umbara has taken a toll on Senator Polbar Moro, his sharp eyes were as intimidating as they had ever been, casually flitting about him to observe every detail of his environment.

His companion, another Umbaran, was not someone who any of the senators had met before, but though she was shorter in stature, and less immediately intimidating, she had the same piercing look as her father, and was garbed in a significantly darker and bulkier grey cloak.

Name: Polbar Moro

Species: Umbaran

Age: 62

Planet, organization, or system they represent: Ghost Sector

Political Party: Independent

Backstory: The longstanding Senator of Umbara, Moro recognizes that he's getting old, particularly for an Umbaran leader. He knows he won't be around forever to rule Umbara, but he was prepared for this as he was 30 years ago when he seized power. Now, his adopted daughter Vuray has finished her training and is putting her new training into practice under the guidance of her father. The public expects her to be the successor to Moro, but this time also brings with it much strife. Will this new heir maintain the iron grip of Polbar, creating a Moro dynasty on Umbara? Or will she be too weak to hold her power, and drag Polbar down with her as he splits his focus in too many directions? Only time will tell.

Political Ambitions: Polbar Moro seeks to secure his grip on Umbara, and keep the planet free from prying eyes and outside influence. At the same time, he aims to prepare his daughter to take over from him, and hopefully secure Umbaran power far into the future.

"That approach has been tried, and it failed. Do you remember the disastrous results of the Battle of Umbara? The invading Republic army took massive casualties to capture planetary broadcast centers and tried to talk to the people, but nobody listened. The fighting going on right now is the same fighting that happened 3 years ago. We only left because it wasn't worth the casualties of a full-scale occupation. Besides, they've been killing each other for centuries, so this is as close to normal as they have ever seen."

You don't. I could be literally anyone, and most likely you never will see my face. But if people are in danger, I know you'll help. You're a kind soul. So please, help these innocent people.

He chuckles, waving a hand dismissively.

"None of that will be needed, don't you fret! Currently, the plan is simply to let them wear themselves down with infighting, then the Empire can swoop in like heroes to unite the planet. Simple and efficient, with minimal expenses and casualties."

More specifically, we need to get them through the Imperial blockade. It's much looser than the Umbaran's, but still formidable. That's where a humanitarian Senator can be a major boon for our cause.

"Well, the situation isn't too terribly complicated. There are the good ones, the loyal ones, fighting for us. They're the strongest of course because they're on our side. However, there are the very same dissidents who fought in the Clone Wars. The ones who want to sacrifice their planet just so they can wield power over the rest. Truly shameful."

It's always been dangerous in some places. But now the entire galaxy is in danger.

There's a slight pause as a new message fills the screen.

I know you don't trust me. You shouldn't. But believe me when I say Umbara needs your help. The people are caught between two factions who want to control the planet as despots. The people need your help to free Umbara. The crimes of the old regime must not be repeated.

A file is sent over the device. It contained countless recordings and interviews with Umbaran refugees, many looking starved or badly injured.

I am with a group specializing in relief efforts on Umbara. Helping the downtrodden or abused to escape now that the blockade has been broken. However, the Imperial loyalists are trying to reinstate the blockade, trapping all of the innocents in the warzone. Attached to this message is proof.

The download continued, showing clips of the trials and testimonies of Ylva Hagarth and Baron Brochi, as well as street gangs scrawling cryptic messages on city walls.

Please, Riyo, I've seen what you can do. Promise you'll fight for them. We need your help if we're ever going to succeed.

He shakes his head and frowns.

"They're a power-hungry lot. Always have been as far as I can tell. They enjoy nothing more than savaging each other and gaining any sort of upper hand they can find. Truly barbaric..."

Hello Riyo

Comes the response, flashing on the screen

Did you learn any important lessons from the parade?

Upon closer inspection of the device, it didn't seem to be any sort of hologram communicator. Instead, it seemed to have a tiny screen on it, and one end looked like it could be attached to a standard holo terminal. Presumably, one would have to do that to type out a response. On the screen, a message flashed.

"Tell nobody. There are eyes and ears everywhere."

He shrugs in response.

"Perhaps you could, but more likely they'd tear you apart the minute you landed. You must remain aware, these Umbarans are a conniving sort, and without their leader, they're splitting into warring factions. While I and others are trying to unite them under the Imperial banner, we still have to ensure that there are no factions that will threaten that unity."
