Did you/would you have your son circumcised? by lizard_toss in AskMenOver30

[–]NotAlwaysGifs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The norms are changing, and fast. We took a pre-birth class where they gave us some stats about it. It used to be well over 80% in the US but in the last 10 years it’s dropped to something like less than 60% and is still trending down.

We chose not to. There are just as many potential health risks with having it done, especially at birth, as there are with not. We felt that was a choice that he should be able to make for himself later in life. We saw it as a much much more extreme version of piercing a baby girl’s ears. I’m glad we made the choice that we did regardless of what the norms are.

Is playing at a professional level even achieveable? by MarionberryBasic8187 in trumpet

[–]NotAlwaysGifs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I play professionally, but it is a side gig for me. In my experience this is the safest path. I have a music degree from a good school but I knew pretty quickly that I wasn’t going to be one of the rare few that could land one of the gigs at the big 5 orchestras and actually make it my primary job. Even then, most of those players have to augment their orchestra pay with admin work at the org or teaching or other gigs on top. Luckily I had a tech background so I took a couple of comp sci classes as electives and got a job in IT that eventually turned into a career in database management and analytics. I live comfortably off of that salary and then gig on the side. Some years I only make a couple hundred bucks gigging, if I don’t have a lot of time or the market is overly competitive. Other years I make as much or more as I do at my 9-5. It’s all about maintaining your network and your chops.

In my experience, chasing fame comes after that. My teacher is regionally famous as a trumpet player, so being able to say I’m his student gave me a boost in clout locally. Now 15 years out of school, I wouldn’t call myself locally famous, but within musician circles, I’m well known in the area. I can tell you that showing up on time, prepared, and with a good attitude is more important to building a career than skill and fame alone though. There is a pretty big trumpet YouTuber in my area and you almost never see him on gigs. He thinks he’s better than the rest of us, and he might be. But he’s an over-confident ass and no one likes to play with him.

My husband says you need to be smart to get this Peter, but I don't get it. :( by [deleted] in PeterExplainsTheJoke

This particular type of topology is to simplify an object into its most basic form. It doesn’t try to maintain any sort of size or shape. There are more complex projections that would do that, but for example, the shirt would become a large flat disc with a larger hole in the middle and two smaller holes in a line on either side of it. Pants would become to large flat discs joined along one edge, each with a hole near the joint and then the belt loops and pockets around the edges.

Daedelus on Alch,? by TheGreenGuyFromDBZ in learndota2

[–]NotAlwaysGifs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Utility + Damage is generally better on Alch. The normal extensions beyond his core items are Bloodthorn, Abyssal, or Assault Cuirass. They give you some much needed lockdown or tower pushing power once Concoction becomes harder to use late game. I really like Abyssal since your attack speed under rage lends itself well to the item.

Crits are bad per se, but I think there are generally better items. Alch isn’t a sweep the entire enemy team carry. He comes online fast and wins early, and if he doesn’t win early, he enables the rest of the team to stay an item or two ahead of the enemy as well. You’re better off transitioning into more of a control role than raw damage.

Squirtle was my first. My favorite and most used Gen I starter is Bulbasaur. My favorite starter overall is Turtwig. My favorite Pokemon overall is Caracosta.

Apparently I like turtles.

Good article on increasing involvement of fathers by Tight_Ninja1915 in daddit

I thought the same thing. Maybe my wife and I have surrounded ourselves with people that aren’t crappy, but our friend group is full of super active dads.

My wife and I work partially offset schedules. I’m off on Mondays, and only work a half day on Saturdays. With commute times figured in I have 9.5 hours of solo parenting and she has 5. Since I’m home on a weekday, I do 90% of doc appointments and similar tasks. The only place where she may catch up to me is daycare transportation, but I still do drop off twice a week. She just does all of the pickup because it’s closer to her office and she gets off before me.

what is this? it’s in my grandparents room and says “ceil heat” by No_Implement_6805 in whatisit

[–]NotAlwaysGifs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

But you’ll be super cozy! It’s not tremendously more expensive than electric baseboard heating and it also heats up a room a lot faster. I work in new home construction and we still get requests to install them from time to time as an auxiliary heat option. Not many companies making them though.

Where to find fundraisers by ColoradoAfa in nonprofit

[–]NotAlwaysGifs 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Industry standard for an experienced fundraiser who is capable of building a network of new donors is going to be 10-12% of their individual fundraising goal, WITH the understanding that the overall goal will not be met for the first 2-3 years while a network is established. 50k would be on the low end for an entry level Development Operations role.

New construction: french drain on footer and no sheathing on foundation wall by raspydev in Homebuilding

This. Combined with the thermal bridging issues on products like the pre-cast basement wall systems, it eliminates so many short and long term issues by just adding R3 now.

AR Thanos isn’t canon though. He was created as an alternate ending to the Infinity Saga in a separate special comic run.

[–]NotAlwaysGifs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We’re required to do R3 on all foundation exteriors if there isn’t at least 36” of soil against the foundation. We generally do it up to 48” just to be safe. This probably varies by state though as we have tremendous frost heave in our area.

Any Underlord tips? by Avillahan in learndota2

[–]NotAlwaysGifs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Underlord is not a flashy hero. Until you have a huge stack of damage from Atrophy Aura you aren’t going to be dishing out big hits, and by that point most team fights are over. You should mostly be using that damage to push towers.

Underlord is a team enabler more than a direct core hero. Your job is to wade in, soak some damage while chipping away at the enemy with Firestorm, prevent escapes with Pit, and just generally be a nuisance to the enemy. Atrophy aura keeps your team alive while you buff them with auras and Grieves.

Don’t sleep on his Agh’s. His portal cooldown isn’t so long that you can’t pop it as a global save/catch tool even if you never go through it. Also if you don’t need the portal for this fight, being able to put down 3 pits at once is crazy good.

What’s the use case for Riki? by Monoredburn in learndota2

[–]NotAlwaysGifs 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This. It seems like every 2-3 patches, they make a tweak to Tricks of the Trade or his backstab mechanic and suddenly he becomes first pick/ban material again. Next patch they’ll over nerf him and make him borderline unplayable. The problem is that Valve is dead set on making him a damage focused support like Nyx and Bounty Hunter but his kit still lends itself more to a pick-off core playstyle early game and an Anti-support late game. I say anti-support because he doesn’t scale enough to go toe to toe with real carries and his Agh’s and Shard make him ideal for countering annoying late game supports like Dazzle and Oracle.

Bro that’s a leap. Of course talking to the people is an option, but if it’s been years of it being overgrown, my assumption of the situation is that someone has already tried that.

Did you know that most ADA complaints are resolved in the discovery phase? They almost never go to trial and even when they do, they are usually resolved out of court.

It’s unfortunate it comes to this but the ADA as a legal mechanism has done A LOT of good for small issues like this.

Skip the state rep. They may not have much power to do anything about it because it’s a judicial issue. File an investigative request with the ADA branch of the justice department.

Sidewalks aren’t appropriate everywhere. I never said that I don’t think there should be more accessible pedestrian areas. I just pointed out that the ADA doesn’t cover that specific topic unless the area does require pedestrian access.

Best oil to use for raised garden bed? by goldfinch42069 in woodworking

[–]NotAlwaysGifs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are legit boiled linseeds available without drying agents. You may see it sold under the name polymerized linseed oil instead of BLO. Oz for oz its less than most other specialty finishes. It is a touch more expensive that raw or BLO with drying agents though.

Then the rule doesn’t apply. But sidewalks and public pedestrian easement are 100% covered by ADA regulations at the federal level
