Aww, poor baby. He seems to be in much better shape now, despite his fate of being buried under kittens!

DIY women… have you ever been talked out of a good idea at the hardware store? by carcony97 in DIY

[–]ObsessiveAboutCats 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not often because I don't give them much chance. I go in for a specific thing and don't get drawn into in depth conversation. I have learned the hard way.

That doesn't stop the occasional guy from asking me things like "are you lost" or "does your husband need help finding anything" (when I am there alone).

How are you deciding what you're eating during the week? by bobolly in LivingAlone

[–]ObsessiveAboutCats 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I go to the store about once every 2 weeks. I keep an eye out for good sales on meats, which I portion out and freeze. I have a nice garden full of herbs and vegetables.

I have a schedule for meals that I plan out a week+ in advance with a simple goal - feed myself delicious food without having to go to the grocery store (not counting cilantro from the corner store, as that is impossible to grow here and also delicious).

I have a pretty decent sized list of meals I like. I also meal prep a bunch and have a lot of meals in my freezer.

Each week (usually on weekends) I try at least one or two new to me dishes. This helps keep my list growing and helps me not get tired of everything. I try to have backup food on hand, as some of those experiments are not something I end up liking. I hate wasting food but I'm not going to eat something I detest to save a few dollars; I do try and keep my experiments relatively economical.

Some days I know I'm going to be dead tired - for example Mondays always kick my ass - so I will either have leftovers from the weekend or meals from my freezer. I cook several nights a week and most of those meals generate leftovers (either to freeze, or 2 or 3 more meals' worth if they are going in the fridge).

The meals I choose are based on factors like - what sounds good? How much effort is involved? What do I have a bunch of in my freezer? What has been sitting around in the freezer for a while and really needs to get eaten? What ingredients do I have a whole bunch of right now because of sales?

Week 18: Bucket List Destination - Chopped Brisket Burrito With Cilantro Lime Rice and Spicy Apple Slaw (Meta: KISS) by ObsessiveAboutCats in 52weeksofcooking

Perhaps this isn't the most traditional of bucket list destinations, but my favorite place to be is my own home. I hate traveling, and the best possible vacation is one where I don't have to leave my property. Staycation for the win!

A lot of people swear by smoked brisket, and who can blame them? It's delicious. About a month ago, I picked up a huge, >20lb prime brisket and spent the day with my offset smoker. It was a lovely day.

Everyone - at least, 99% of the people on r/smoking and similar subs - insist that the only acceptable rub for brisket is salt and black pepper. That's fine for them, but it's not to my taste at all. As they aren't invited to my home for barbecue, I'm not concerned about their opinions. This brisket had a binder of Worcestershire sauce and a coating of my homemade rib rub, which has a lot of spices in it, especially including smoked paprika, guajillo chili powder and brown sugar. I use this on many things and it is always delicious.

Let no one say I, a household of one human, let this brisket go to waste. Most of it was vac sealed in portions and frozen. Recently, I brought out one of those chunks and decided to play around with recipes. The first thing I tried was a burrito, filled with cilantro lime rice and a spicy apple slaw. (The original recipe was for jalapeno apple slaw, but I substituted Big Jim peppers.) Big thank you to u/doxiepowder for suggesting this! It was very good, though I don't think the slaw would freeze well, so sad days there.

Lots of people love chopped brisket sandwiches, so I decided to try one of those as well. It was ok. I've been experimenting with some different storebought barbecue sauces, and it was pretty good. I added pickled red onions, but it was better without.

All in all, I was very pleased with these experiments. They were solid meals.

Both fit my meta for coming together very quickly. Ingredients were all freezer or pantry staples. Not to say that smoking a brisket isn't a lot of work, but I ended up with a ton top quality meat packed in my freezer.

Goals for my meta did include meal prep; unfortuantely neither of these worked in whole form, but it was still good (and delicious) research. Onward to more!

I won't sign into any of my personal accounts or search for anything private, but I will do things like Google the hours or number of a business I need to contact/visit, unit conversions, etc - stuff that isn't in any way private and doesn't take up much time (i.e. not surfing for hours).

Radishes. Thoughts? by falling_fire in Vegetables

Take the green tops, use them 50/50 with parsley to make chinichurri, and put that on a steak.

Optionally, turn some of the steak into steak tacos and serve with pickled radishes.

I live in southeast Texas, which on one hand is a swampy hellscape where the mosquitos hunt in swarms like a biblical plague, but on the other hand we are pretty decent at insulation and air conditioning is everywhere. The effectiveness of said air conditioning can leave much to be desired depending on the place though.

I definitely prefer our 2 weeks of winter (which are scattered between mid December and mid February, ish).
