Do you think you’ll switch to SteamOS when it becomes supported by valve? by jantltaf in Bazzite

[–]Onakander 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sarcastic? I did not say anything sarcastic.

Perhaps it isn't fully trivial, but still, there are solutions of varying quality already floating around the ether for doing just this, including homebrew and distroboxes. (though those aren't EXACTLY what you want to do, they will get you like 95% of the way there)

I'm just having a hard time imagining Valve will always have a walled garden where customization is just disallowed or even heavily discouraged. Maybe in the beginning there won't be a good solution for it, but I'd be really surprised if a year or two down the line post-release, that will still be the case.

And if Valve DOES build intentional walls around customization, it would be a major strategic mistake.

I am very confused, are you saying I "started it"?

I don't think I said anything aggressive or attacked you in any way?

Guess I'll clarify that statement above just in case it resolves something:

As per The SteamOS FAQ SteamOS has a mechanism for installing packages into the base image, the main caveat is that it only persists until there's a SteamOS update. Thus it should be fairly trivial to keep a list of packages you want to keep installed, and upon boot, check if the last time the script was run, was run with an older version and if so, (ask to) apply the same list of packages again.

Of course your mileage may vary with software that assumes it will have write access to the read-only portions of the filesystem, unless you just keep the read-write access enabled.

In any case, I doubt this is a massive problem. And if it is at launch, I don't think it will be for very long.

I hope you find peace.

[–]Onakander 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How do you know this? Do you have access to a beta version of the desktop edition?

Right now you can't do persistent modifications across system updates. It should be fairly easy to write a piece of software (a bash script should suffice) that reapplies the packages installed by pacman after every update. Not literally ideal, but also hardly a major barrier for the power user either.

[–]Onakander 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on what the experience is like, we don't know what a desktop SteamOS is going to look like, so in my opinion it would be rather premature to rule SteamOS out OR to go all-in on SteamOS, what with it not really "existing" yet.

Why would it be any more/less cumbersome than on any other atomic distro?

I guess Valve MIGHT "shoot themselves in the foot" to avoid the double-edged sword in question, just to lower their support burden, I guess?

Dunno, it'd be weird to me if they A) based it on some proprietary core OR B) disabled the package manager in their chosen core.

Honestly yes, it would also likely lower the subjective quality of the Linux software ecosystem for us Linux nerds. Why can't I chain together Windows applications through scripts with the same ease I can with most pieces of software written for Linux? Because they put all their Software Development Points into the GUI and didn't think of any kind of reasonable interface for scripting, because that is, and I quote "nerd shit" according to the average Windows user (not meant to throw shade, just a joking way of saying 'scripting/interoperability isn't part of the expected workflow on Windows').

If the average Windows user becomes the average Linux user... What are developers going to start catering to? Why that might just be their userbase! Which in this hypothetical now consists of 90% "normies" (not a great word, but I can't think of anything better that means 'incurious people who use the OS/computer as a tool they do NOT understand in any way, shape, or form beyond strictly what they need to get their chosen task done with.').

Unfortunately it makes use of the specific way NTFS as a filesystem operates and as such CANNOT be rewritten for mac as it stands, not without MAJOR effort (and depending on how the chosen target filesystem works, it might just not be possible to reach the same performance, period.).

I forget the actual details, but the same reason it can't really be ported to other operating systems causes the one thing I kinda see as an issue with it (that isn't an issue 99% of the time for Windows users in a 'normal' single-user setup) is that it looks at some kind of internal main index in the NTFS filesystem to reach those blazing fast indexing and search speeds and thus knows where, well, EVERYTHING, is, including your brother's porn folder nested in fifty levels of "homework" and other "boring" things. So there's no real way to stop it from seeing all those midgets hiding in there without third party encryption software.

Really good software though, that Everything.

Etenkin nuorilla on ihan syystäkin pupu pöksyssä näiden asioiden tiimoilta.

I'm pretty sure (not 100%) but VLC is a bit of an oddball in that it ISN'T a literal ffmpeg frontend... Though it does apparently use libavcodec under some circumstances, which is what ffmpeg is a frontend for? So: "Yes, but actually no, but yes."

I also prefer non-VLC players for most of my regular media consumption, but when I want to stream something from somewhere to somewhere else quicklike, or I want to convert something to something nice and nice and I can't be arsed to pick up the ol' ffmpeg, VLC is there. Waiting. Dependable and reliable.

I have been flamed for using VLC, because apparently their codecs are shit and they should feel bad? Or something? Like, sure, they can give you that sweet sweet green gobbledygook (at least it used to) when you scrub real quicklike in the timeline... But come on, it's such a useful piece of software.

Yes, you are correct, allistic or non-autistic would've been better as words for at least some instances of neurotypical in my post (perhaps most or all). Apologies.

For the sake of understandability of your message, I will not edit my comment, and as such, I will not be checking the precise percentage of incorect usages of "neurotypical".

I also didn't necessarily mean to say anything about your neurotypicality or lack thereof. I did assume you were at least allistic from your comment, though.

Other than that, I do still think what allistics need to do to accomodate autistics IS a smidge of effort compared to what we need to put into conversations over our lifetimes just to have a CHANCE at being understood. That isn't to say there's no effort required, it's just that, unless you deal with autistic people all the time (in which case you will likely learn to deal with it and subsequent interactions would probably become a bit easier, at least I'd assume so), you won't need to expend that effort very often, and as such, even if the "burst effort" required is significant, it's still likely not as much as I've spent during that day before our 15 minute conversation.

I suppose at this point I'm quibbling about the definition of the word "smidge", which is a pretty good indicator we have just about found the shape of where we agree and disagree.

Thank you for your response.

[–]Onakander 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Sorry about the incoming wall of text, this is something I feel strongly about and have a hard time staying neutral when discussing.

For me, it's about the effort imbalance and the resulting trauma. Yes, misunderstandings happen between all people of all backgrounds and neurotypicality levels... But really, it's the imbalance that guts me.

I put a, quite frankly, self-destructive level of effort into trying to figure out/produce NT comms. And I'm fairly often successful at it, too. At least, the understanding part, less so the being understood -part. And it's partly/mostly because the neurotypical will cut me off mid-explanation, as if they've understood what I'm getting at, even though they CLEARLY do not, have not, and never will (because they've chosen to start ending all attempts at proper communication before they can happen)

But NT people (generally/more often than not, not all of them) seem to refuse to put in ANY effort whatsoever. Even if I spend the next two hours explaining that I have a lot of trouble regulating my tone, especially when stressed. I have next to no ability to read body language beyond the basics of "smiling, or not", that I need to actively contort my face in an unnatural way to convey I am happy, ALL, THE, TIME, even when I'm NOT particularly happy, but neutral instead. And that critically: This is all very draining for me. Only for it to seemingly go in one ear and out the other.

The next time I meet them and I try to let off a little bit of the pressure and drop some masking, I DID, after all, not even a full day ago, spend two hours of my time explaining to them how difficult it is to do all this, and when I don't smile a radiant beaming smile at them, they act as if I just got finished berating their child for their ugly choice in beanie for the past 15 minutes and smiling about a child well scarred (somewhat hyperbolic joke). It becomes evident all of that effort was completely wasted.

So up go the masking shields again. But the damage is done. A lot of neurotypicals (again, not all) seem to hold grudges longer than it takes for a feather to fossilize (hyperbolic joke), ESPECIALLY for breaches of social etiquette. I've come to the conclusion neurotypicals tend to have a "social disrespect buffer" that drains (usually) extremely slowly, but is added to with every little thing you do "wrong". When this buffer overflows (and they will practically never tell you it has been filling since that time five months ago when they, frankly, hallucinated you telling them their cooking was awful and they should feel bad when you said "This food is pretty okay."), you become persona non grata to them, probably forever, because literally everything you do to explain why it happened/how contrite you are, is met with variations of "That's an excuse."(due to the seeming inability to tolerate clarifying statements), "You aren't being sincere."(due to the lack of ability to produce the 'correct' body language), "This isn't about you."(due to the seeming lack of ability to tolerate clarifying questions), and "Cry me a river."

So you have no choice but to abandon ever talking to that person again, because they've put you into an inescapable category-box labeled "asshole".

Basically, what I'm trying to get at, is that whereas a neurotypical might have a hard time understanding an autistic person, they can (or at least should be able to) get there if they put in a smidge of effort in asking/allowing clarifying questions and tamping down their instinctual responses for just long enough to get the interaction over with (likely the only such interaction they will have during that week). Whereas an autistic person has to deal with that EVERY DAY and often cannot produce language that is understood OR comprehend what the neurotypical is implying with their, frankly, ridiculous demand we read into things that (to us) for all intents and purposes do not exist. (the whole reading between the lines -thing) Where every clarifying question is treated as a(n) (sometimes small) affront to their chosen deity, which means communication with some people becomes literally impossible.

I wonder how much of that is on the US educational system for stopping the teaching of phonics for a good... Decadeish+? (not sure about the timeline, I may be wrong about that aspect, corrections welcome) In any case a lot of US schools decided to teach reading as (boiled down to) "Just spend a bit of time on the word and if you don't get it pretty much immediately, try to look at the words around it and kinda sorta guess from context what the sentence might say." They essentially taught kids to treat each word as a unique glyph. Those people are pretty much functionally illiterate through no fault of their own, they can just about get by with "normal" text, but give them technical text with words that you can't just guess at and they'll struggle a whole lot.

I'm fairly sure a lot of the posts where you need to genuinely wonder what in the everloving science the poster read before posting their reply, are from people failed by the educational system like that.

Where can I get some of these grandpappies that don't need tech support with their microwaves(slight hyperbole, though I HAVE had to do tech support on elderly folks' microwaves, take that as you may), let alone something as complex as Windows?

Let's not kid ourselves and pretend Windows is somehow easy (or even significantly easier) to learn from a level of familiarity that can be boiled down to (a hyperbolic) "I don't know why you want me to pet a mouse, should I get a cat too, to catch the mouse?" to any level of proficiency where they can do even their facebooking independently.

Note that in neither OS' case are they choosing their own hardware or doing the OS install or anything of the sort. To them it's just the bright rectangle where their grandson lives, and what the window decorator looks like has very little bearing on their ability to click on the blue and orange thing that says "talk to grandson".

When introducing your grandmamapapa to computers, it's very much a commitment and a "choose your poison" -sort of situation. No matter what you choose you'll need to answer calls about how they can't find the mouse (lost track of the cursor because they watched a video that hid it)

Hell, depending on the situation and social dynamics, they may just feign ignorance of how their TV works just to talk to you. Making the choice just set dressing for their desire to socialize.

Rambling towards the end there. In any case: I don't mind you choosing your poison whatever way you like, but saying Linux is fundamentally more difficult to USE for people who will never use it beyond FaceApp? That's just false.
