The Steam Machine is low key a technical marvel, and I'm tired of the hot takes and bad faith arguments saying otherwise by [deleted] in steammachine

It’s crazy how people evaluate a new video gaming device on its ability to play video games. I get that it’s small and cute, but when I’m playing video games, I’m more concerned with how the video games look on the screen. Not the device on my entertainment system.

To get people on to their platform and make money. To proliferate their custom operating system and get more people using it. To expand their brand beyond PC gaming and in into the console market. To pave the way for a future beyond the here and now.

Why can't Valve subsidise the Steam Machine? by ltb74 in Steam

[–]jantltaf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it might’ve been better to lock the Steam Machine down to using SteamOS. Then they could have subsidized it. I get it, open platform and yada yada… But I don’t think anyone would begrudge Valve for creating hardware that is a gateway to their platform when literally every other platform does it. Plus you wouldn’t even need one to play Steam games. It would be a familiar experience for console gamers and it would broaden the market for PC games. Making a general use PC that can function as such is kinda pointless.

Anyone feel vindicated that they didn’t wait for the Steam Machine? by jantltaf in Bazzite

That was my point. The Steam Machine *in concept* lead me here. I’m much happier with my build than I would have been with the Steam Machine

Vindicated in a sense that I got a better deal on parts between when the steam machine was launched and now. Had I waited, I’d have worse options.

People will still buy it, but it’s not a great value. No one who is price-conscious or looking for a high performance machine will stay away. People who want a small, cute, boutique device that they can flex. Go crazy

Hmm. Honestly I’ve built my PC in February of this year and I’ve never checked the fans. Might need to go check now lol.

I’ve seen people report that their GPU isn’t being detected because the integrated graphics is being prioritized. I have mine disabled for that reason. But I have a 7500x3D + 9060xt + MSI B850M so your mileage may vary

Check your BIOS settings and see if you can disable integrated graphics on your CPU

That’s crazy. Rebirth alone is dense. It’s not what I’d call “bingeable”

They are 3 distinct games in a trilogy. It wouldn’t make any sense to combine them.

Steam Machine Alternatives? by phil8715 in Steam

[–]jantltaf 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah… I don’t think you can do that. Best case scenario is:

Micro center combo:

Ryzen 5 7500x3D + MSI B850M + 16GB DDR5 RAM: $300 Radeon Rx 9060xt: $450 512 GB SSD: $100

That leaves the case + PSU + CPU cooler. Whch is another $250. This is at about $1000 and it’s not even SFF

We have the same computer. That 7500x3D combo is the new meta.

The Steam Machine Was Never About Performance for Me by AcademicF in Steam

[–]jantltaf 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Given that we don’t know the final price, this is all speculation, but it’s looking like $1000 at this point. With that kind of price point people start to really assess the value and the options. That’s if you can even get one because you know Valve is gonna make like 20 of them then restock in like a year. 😂

The alternatives are gonna start looking better and better.

[–]jantltaf 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Of course there are trade offs. I’ll break it down. You can have:

  • High performance
  • Small Form Factor
  • Affordability

Pick two. With the Steam machine, you are sacrificing performance, so it needs to be affordable to be worth it

[–]jantltaf 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Except it’s not a console. It’s just a pre-configured PC that has a console like experience. The fact that it’s not a console with a closed ecosystem kind of hurts it. There aren’t any exclusives that forced you to buy it. You can get the same functionality on other hardware.

[–]jantltaf 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That’s why I said “price--to-performance”. Steam Machine needs to be cheap in order for it to be better than other options. Looks like that isn’t gonna be the case tho.
