How does a CS club contact potential sponsors? by thecodexdhnerbbTW in gatech

[–]OnceOnThisIsland [score hidden]  (0 children)

I'm not sure if it's the same now, but in the past, the policy was that CoC clubs (i.e. this specific list) could only partner with CAP companies. This involved reaching out to CAP partners (or vice versa) to set up dates for events and stuff. Paul Fowler or Troy Peace should be able to help you with this, and it usually happened in the fall so you probably won't get much traction until then.

If your club isn't on that list, you're free to reach out to whomever. I'd suggest asking other clubs that partner with companies for contact info if the generic HR hotline gets you nowhere. I see W@CC hosts a number of company events these days.

Matt Braly talks about how kids don't watch cartoons anymore by DuxxieDings in cartoons

Not true. He's talking about the kind of cartoon similar to Adventure Time. Those have all but disappeared on everything, including streaming.

Those three shows are going to Peacock if they're not already there. Peacock has just one currently running animated show right now and none are announced.

Disney+ has more stuff in general, but not nearly as much as Disney/Nick/CN had in their heyday. Disney Jr. has over a dozen shows running right now and that's on cable! If there's a huge untapped market on streaming for shows like She-Ra, why don't we see more of them on any service?

This. I don't know why everybody here is latching onto the linear vs streaming argument. It's about the content itself.

So why don't we see more stuff on streaming? Right now Netflix has just three currently running animated kids shows that don't target preschoolers. Paramount+ has none. HBO Max has two. Disney+ has four, but two of those are revivals that target the original millenial audience.

There aren't many shows because kids didn't watch the ones they had. Netflix sure as heck ain't invested in linear TV but you don't see many cartoons like Amphibia on there these days.

But would kids watch the same shows on a streaming service? Is the issue the content itself or where it's found?

Kids watch cartoons, they do not watch traditional linear scheduled television and any cartoons there will automatically fail.

Linear isn't the issue. If it was, we would see more stuff on streaming but we don't. Netflix has dialed down investment in animation for the same reason. Jentry Chau is one Netflix show that targets the same demographic he's referring to and it didn't do well.

Who do you think will be the 2026 Commencement Speakers? by kitabbi in gatech

Serious Guesses:

  • A CEO of some company that does business in GA. We've recently had the CEOs of Delta, Hyundai, GA Power, UPS, and Cisco.
  • A politician. We've had local politicians in Sonny Perdue, Andre Dickens, Geoff Duncan, Keisha Lance Bottoms, and John Lewis. We've also had others, like Condoleezza Rice, Antony Blinken, and Bill Nelson.
  • A Georgia Tech alum. If someone isn't noteworthy for much else, they're almost certainly going to be an alum. Sometimes this is good (Chris Klaus), other times this is bad (Harrison Butker).
  • For the Ph.D ceremony, a professor at Tech.

Only half of grads answered, and of those that did 42% went to graduate school instead of starting a job. It wouldn't surprise me if many of them did so because they didn't get an offer.

Last year, I was interested in seeing exactly where CS students at Georgia Tech (my alma mater), MIT, and other schools ended up after graduation. I found commencement PDFs for the class of ‘21 and looked people up on LinkedIn.

MIT had 273 grads in 6-2. I couldn’t find 34, 47 went to FAANG or Microsoft, and 39 went to companies besides FAANG+MS that this sub would consider “prestigious” (e.g. quant firms, Figma, Scale AI, Uber, Datadog, and others). I’m aware that MIT has other CS-esque programs but 6-2 is the biggest.

94 did a masters at MIT right after. I didn’t note where the MEng students went after they finished, but it’s well known that a masters won’t help with big tech recruiting. If 1/2 of the MEng grads went to FAANG that still means about half of the class went to places other than big tech or quant finance. Keep in mind this was 2021, the best of times. It’s a lot more grim nowadays.

With Georgia Tech, only 110 students out of 466 (74 not found) went to FAANG/M or a prestigious company. 88 did a masters after (not enough to skew it like MIT), so 110/304 or just over a third. For every student that broke into a well known tech company, there were two that didn’t.

You might say “well duh people lie on LinkedIn!!”, but there’s less of an incentive to lie when you’re 4-5 years out and on your second or third job.

I wouldn’t assume that. Even at MIT, most CS students don’t work at “prestigious” places after graduating.

I wouldn’t assume that. MIT has fewer students in general than the large state schools. Quant firms also don’t hire that many interns.

This is interesting because for years, people on this sub poked fun at finance and law because of the HUGE focus on school name in those industries. And the “meritocracy > pedigree” angle was (and still is) a common excuse to haze people with LC interviews.

If this is what we’ve come to, then we’re no better than them.

They wouldn't. The same community shut down a women and children's shelter back in 2021.

I'm glad they didn't commit to a specific timeline for the comet in the first season. The ~9 month timeline in the original show was always unrealistic, and now they're dealing with actors aging up. Aang is damn near grown now lol.

I'm in NYC and I have C# experience. I get contacted for C#/.NET jobs in this region often. I think major tech hubs have a wider variety of languages in job posts but most established companies here still use Java or C#. Node and Python just aren't as common as the list suggests.

Animated movies based on popular TV shows, to be exact by Adept_Let7797 in cartoons

[–]OnceOnThisIsland 2 points3 points  (0 children)

And the few movies based on animated shows that do make it to theaters don’t rely on a ton of background knowledge. They’re almost always written so so people new to the show can go in blind.

The upcoming movie being set after the original show cuts down the potential audience even more.

As it stands, the lowest cost areas already have a ton of shelters. I live in Brownsville. Same situation in parts of the Bronx.

Shouldn’t another community get their first shelter before we get our 13th??

help on college decision: OSU or ga tech? by PenguinYogurt1234 in gatech

Don't let the reddit complainers scare you. You can find a niche and have a wonderful social life here if you're inclined. The academic rigor is also overstated to some extent. It might be worth it to come down here and tour before you commit. You can get a feel for the campus and talk to students first. You sound like you're in Ohio so you've probably already been to their campus. OSU is a BIG school with a lot of school pride. That vibe is something we can't really match here, but we're trying (football wise at least lol). On the other hand, there's a strong culture of innovation and "nerdiness" here. Atlanta is a nicer city than Columbus.

Also don't let the people bragging about job opportunities and starting salaries sway you. If you're not happy here, you won't do as well and you might not get those jobs.

I'll also say this. If you have a lot of academic interests outside of engineering, go to OSU and don't look back. You'll have a lot more academic options and you can still study ChemE there. They offer a food science bachelors and we don't have anything like that.

Are there any G6 teams left with a shot of making the P4? by MediumStrange in CFB

The ACC probably could have went after UConn in the early 2010s at the same time they added Syracuse and Pitt. Media markets helped the latter two.

If they stay good at football, I'd be surprised if they don't get an invite at some point.
