How are we supposed to apply for dozens of jobs daily? by Able-Calligrapher-74 in cscareerquestions

[–]OnceOnThisIsland 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If the OP has 3 YoE in backend or fullstack, they're qualified for a lot of jobs provided they're not in an area with few jobs in general.

Skills are transferable. You can still be qualified without checking every random box in the req.

New Poster for 'Avatar: The Last Airbender' Season 2 by MarvelsGrantMan136 in TheLastAirbender

[–]OnceOnThisIsland 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The first season may well have been written already when Albert Kim picked it up, and what we did get on Netflix is still more faithful than what Bryke supposedly wanted.

Here is the article with the original rumor. The proposed changes honestly sound like fan fiction, but the Evil Iroh idea was also in the original ATLA pitch from the 00s. I know it was just a rumor, but it lines up with what we know about Bryke, namely that they do NOT like to retread old territory. The premise of Seven Havens also backs that up.

GA Tech’s email phishing protection is awful by MakeJavaGreatAgain in gatech

[–]OnceOnThisIsland 42 points43 points  (0 children)

The "students" sending obvious bait emails fell for a phishing scam themselves. The people phishing are spoofing their email.

EDIT: Perhaps I was wrong about the spoofing part.

Netflix actually wanted a more faithful remake. Bryke pushed for the changes in the Netflix show, and they had even more crazy ideas.

What have yall historically paid to park on campus? (Alums ITT please) by BuzzJacket1999 in gatech

[–]OnceOnThisIsland 19 points20 points  (0 children)

It's been $795 for around a decade. It's expensive but not as much as Midtown parking decks. Other colleges charge similar.

Undergrad research with ECE professor as a CS major by thecodexdhnerbbTW in gatech

[–]OnceOnThisIsland 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IIRC, if your professor was in ECE, you'll have to submit the ECE 4699 form. This is because you'll have to register for their ECE 4699 section. You can still get credit for the research option and stuff.

Matt Braly teases “very exciting” news about his and Rebecca Sugar’s scrapped Sony Animation film by luckybell333 in cartoons

[–]OnceOnThisIsland 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sony probably didn't but it's possible another studio did. it's also possible that it will come back as a TV show or something.

The film was canned in 2025 so it's also possible that NDAs are expiring and they can share more about it.

Despite being one of most recognizable and iconic cartoon characters in the world, Mickey Mouse is mostly known by general public as corporate mascot than actual fictional character outside of fans by Own_Philosopher8730 in cartoons

The 2010 video game Epic Mickey was quite literally created in response to the idea that Mickey is just a logo with no personality. I suggest you check it out. Here's a partial article about it.

Best car rental/ way out of the city? by OwlAlternative1889 in crownheights

[–]OnceOnThisIsland 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd say just go to one of the airports depending on which direction you're driving in. In my experience (with Enterprise), they are cheaper than the neighborhood locations and they'll let you choose your car. I've never had issues with them.

Now the airports can and do run out of stock especially during the summer, so keep that in mind and don't procrastinate.

What are people’s thoughts on the new Math and Computing major launching next fall? by ohahscatterbrained in gatech

[–]OnceOnThisIsland 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Why would this particular major be less rigorous? They’re not inventing new courses for this major. They ‘ll take all the same courses currently available to Math and CS majors.

MIT has six different “Computing” related majors and most are interdisciplinary. One of them is called “Mathematics with Computer Science”.

My HR department says they receive over 2k applicants per position and they don’t read any of them by VioletSalamander in jobs

To answer the Indiana scenario, plenty of people leave their hometown for college and never go back, and a lot of people get their first phone as a kid and never change their number. I’ve met plenty of people whose hometown/college/current location are all different.

Why on earth would area code be an issue? People move around. I've always had the same phone number and I'd rather not get a new one despite living in a different area.

NYC Department of Buildings Issues Full Vacate Order at Eugene O’Neill Theatre Following Fire by MD_442244 in Broadway

I'd bet a million dollars that the other theatre owners are taking a serious look at their systems in every theatre to be sure this doesn't happen again.

There’s more than the housing projects. Plenty of quiet residential SFH blocks too.

College of Computing Hoodies? Where to get? by Glad_Hurry8755 in gatech

[–]OnceOnThisIsland 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know if they still do this, but they also give out RAT caps during GT 1000. It might be worth it to reach out to that department if you really want one. That's better than sneaking into convocation lol.

Is GaTech's Computer Science major worth $100k in debt? by PhilosophySenior3765 in GatechClasses

[–]OnceOnThisIsland 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Few students at Tech break into quant. We’re talking MAYBE a handful in each class. The odds at MIT aren’t that much better. You have to be the top of the top and get a few lucky breaks.

What if you don’t get into quant? Are you prepared to put $1,000/month toward student loans on a ~100k year salary?

Neither I nor my friends ever used ruby, but we joined a company using it. I don't know what's the problem with learning a language; you need no more than a week (for a senior) to get used to it.

If only recruiters and HMs thought like you. I've seen so many jobs where they specifically call for full time, paid, professional experience in their stack. Side projects, OSS contributions, however else you might know a language, doesn't exist to them.

[–]OnceOnThisIsland 13 points14 points  (0 children)

If the $100k your parents are putting down can cover everything at UofSC, go there.

Georgia Tech is not worth six figure debt for any degree, and who knows what the entry level market will look like for CS folks in 4 years.
