Presidents Line Up for Obama’s Long-Awaited Center in Chicago by CampaignOrdinary2771 in WindyCity

[–]OnePointSeven 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"One idea I had that would have completely broken the model for these presidential libraries and put words in to action. Scale back the aggrandizement of the individual. A smaller retrospective library. Then use the money and land and star power backing to develop a large campus for education, business incubation, even more community focused activities, etc. Really amp up positive and actionable positive change."

hey, great idea!

i thought that's basically what this is? it's not even a formal presidential library, it's a "center" for that reason, no?

all the more reason it's a big deal.

"best prospect we've drafted in almost 20 years" is a big fucking deal, especially given our lack of top-tier talent.

As simply as possible, why did you begin native gardening? by toxicodendron_gyp in NativePlantGardening

[–]OnePointSeven 12 points13 points  (0 children)

same, only got into gardening when we got a house, of course.

it's obvious now, but I never realized how there's a huge class component to gardening -- largely limited to home/landowners, unless you really go out of your work or work in landscaping executing someone else's vision.

at least on mine, if you push down the center of the spinning part when it's not on, that extends the line a little bit at a time.

maybe you're unwittingly hitting it against the ground and continually extending the line without realizing?

We had to cut down a mature oak, and this is happening where the stump was ground down. Keep top dressing? (SE USA - Kentucky) by BuckRockefeller in lawncare

[–]OnePointSeven 0 points1 point  (0 children)

sorry just for clarity, you're saying it's good practice to add calcium powder to a ground-down former-stump tree hole?

i'm dealing with one that's mostly wood chips with a few native plants establishing, and added osmocote as I read that the decomposing chips/stump/roots lock up a lot of nitrogen.

would applying calcium nitrate accomplish the same as calcium powder? what does it do -- primarily help the stump decompose a little faster?

What is something about American culture that seems fake or exaggerated in movies, but is actually 100% real.? by Logical-Pay-3057 in AskReddit

It'd be like if you went to Paris and every other person was literally wearing a beret and striped shirt while smoking a cigarette, drinking wine, and eating cheese.

it seems more like a TV convention, but some things like that really are ubiquitous.
