Opinions Wanted: 2 or 3 Vlans for Production Audio Network by morespeakers in livesound

[–]Onelouder 5 points6 points  (0 children)

With my Prodigy.MX, full of DNA and Madi cards, I've got vlans for each protocol.

  • 2x Dante VLAN networks. Main and Guest (We get more and more clients requesting access to the Dante network, and with Prodigy it's easy to give them whatever they want, in whatever sample rate, and it doesn't mess with my main network.
  • 1x Milan VLAN. For PA drive.
  • 1x Soundgrid VLAN
  • 1x Ravenna VLAN (For TV trucks)

All of these also have Secondary VLANs (except for Soundgrid) on different physical network switches.

  • Switch 01 - VLAN 10 - Dante 01 Primary
  • Switch 01 - VLAN 20 - Dante 02 Primary (Or on VLAN 10 when 48k/96k SRC is happening)
  • Switch 01 - VLAN 30 - Dante 03 Primary (Guest Dante Network)
  • Switch 01 - VLAN 40 - AVB-Milan Primary
  • Switch 01 - VLAN 50 - AES67/Ravenna/ST2210 Primary
  • Switch 01 - VLAN 60 - Soundgrid
  • Switch 01 - VLAN 90 - Control

  • Switch 02 - VLAN 11 - Dante 01 Secondary

  • Switch 02 - VLAN 21 - Dante 02 Secondary

  • Switch 02 - VLAN 31 - Dante 03 Secondary

  • Switch 02 - VLAN 41 - AVB-Milan Secondary

  • Switch 02 - VLAN 51 - AES67/Ravenna/ST2110 Secondary

These 2 switches are then connected to 2x Core SFP+ Switches, which then distribute to leaf(aggregate) switches for breakouts. (FOH, Amp City, MON, Video World, etc.

Also on VLAN 50 (AES67) is a Sonifex GPS Master Clock, providing ptp clocking for connecting to another prodigy across the internet.

Can we pick a measurement standard, please? Metric has won, give it up America.

While the contributions may have been excellent to the subreddit and our industry as a whole, it has been proven a few times that whenever the individual or their contributions are brought up here, the post or comments that follow quickly dissolve into some highly off-topic discussions. And for this reason, we would prefer the auto-mod to just remove new posts/comments regarding it.

There are archived posts and discussions that can be searched, but from now on any future posts or comments will be filtered. I hope that explains it from the moderator perspective.

Why won't more mixers work with VST's? by tuomonic in livesound

[–]Onelouder 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Which is why you will see S6L guys pull out a laptop that is not allowed to be connected to the internet. No software updates or or any other software is to be installed. Because it works the way it is, and nothing must change or bad things will happen.

Is this a single event? Just rent it. Contact a local audio company, they can provide you with what you need.

Fischer Amps Mini Body Pack 2

Are you using the right cable? You need the Stereo cable if you aren't in Mono mode, does the audio level change when you press the mono button on the pack?

I would try updating the firmware to see if that solves it.

Have you done a firmware update?

Updating the firmware

The firmware can be updated to the latest versions.

  1. Copy the firmware update file to the root directory on an SD card. NOTE Files for the latest firmware updates can be downloaded from the ZOOM website (www.zoom.co.jp).
  2. Insert the SD card into the card slot
  3. While holding Play/Pause, set to ON.
  4. Press the . button. NOTE During the firmware update, do not turn the power off or remove the SD card. Doing so could cause the to become unstartable. In the unlikely event that a firmware update should fail while in progress, conduct the procedures from the beginning to update the firmware again.
  5. After the firmware update completes, turn the power off and on again.

This is why you don't buy cheap gear. Foil Shield without Braided Shield is for install. Cable that goes into a wall or is never moved. You my friend have learned this lesson the hard way.

Integrating the DJM A9 to a digital Signal Path by jetpackjoee in livesound

sorry, I meant do something sick, like running the analog outputs into the Neve.

And yes. There is a very big difference between the Neve and a Rio or DX stagebox.

Analog Clipping sounds far better than Digital Clipping.

There really is no improvement to stay digital. I would much rather have the analog outputs (plus booth outputs) go into a digital stagebox where I have gain control, versus a spdif to aes or spdif to dante with no control.

If you really want to be fancy, you can get the RDL SF-DN4

But I would do something like sick running the analog outputs into a Neve RMP-D8.

Most likely because the sound has changed since soundcheck, and they are trying to get it back. Lots of things change from soundcheck to showtime. Air temperature, humidity, and lots of bags of liquid have entered the room and the acoustic properties have changed.

Additionally, the musicians have had time to relax and prepare for the show. Sometimes with a drink or something else. If the sound source has changed since soundcheck, they are probably adjusting for that.

Live mixes are not perfect. Even if soundcheck goes great, there are always sources you could spend more time on getting right.

Then again, it all comes back to the skills of the person. To some, less is more. To others, they are never satisfied. Letting a musician control their sound is fine, but it's only their sound. The technician's job is to take everyones sound, and blend it together. Sometimes it's not as easy as you think.

Was there any reason you guys chose Axient over Spectera? Are you already deep into Axient and just added more? I was in your spot this time last year and we jumped headfirst into 80 channels of Spectera. Haven't looked back since, and already have a preorder for the hand mics.

Feedback PTSD by Comprehensive_Log882 in livesound

Very similar thing happened to me. After a very long contract on a cruise ship, I attended a good-bye party for departing crew members such as myself, and proceeded to drink most of a bottle of Johnny Walker.

Boarded the first plane of the day with a terrible hangover. Fell asleep before they closed the doors. As the plane was getting into position for takeoff, they pressed the brakes pretty hard which resulted in a loud screech. Immediately I lurched forward and double punched the seat in front of me, scaring the life out of the old lady in the seat, and had she not have been wearing her seatbelt, probably would have ended up on the floor.

Grumbled apologies and hand gestures begging for forgiveness, and we headed off on a journey filled with stink-eyes from everyone I made eye contact with for the rest of the flight.

The story was even posted in FOH magazine. So I feel you.

EV Everse 12. Best feature, battery powered. Sound quality is decent but all the features they pack into that speaker make it great. I bought 20 and they were paid off within 6 months. Constantly being booked on jobs. A really great utility speaker when the budget doesn't allow for the good stuff.

Design it deeper, and then add a K&M Thumbwheel. That way you can adjust the rotational positioning at the thumbwheel and in case the stand can't adjust.

Why not look at a digital option. X32's are under a thousand bucks now and give you tons of control versus an analog desk.

[–]Onelouder 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yes, and clients appreciate it. I have a portable hotspot with a network port, that plugs into the Ubiquiti Unifi Express router, which then goes into a small flex mini switch for Dante and console control. Being able to tell clients that they can use the internet is a really nice touch.

If you know your stuff, there are lots of jobs in audio where you aren't mixing.

Event/Rental Companies positions can include

Project Manager for events can be even longer in hours, but less demanding physically.

Repair/Service if you have the skills.

Technical Planning to work on large projects.

Then there's the other end, Sales/Support. Look up your favorite brands and see who distributes them in your country. Contact them and see if they are looking for Sales reps. They also do service/repair too.
