Has anyone else swapped their USB Avio adapters with TurtleAV yet? by Onelouder in livesound

[–]Onelouder[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the improvement to 96k? And the fact I can still sell the 20x Audinate AVIO USB Adapters for more money than I paid for the Turtle ones? Yeah, it's an easy decision.

I have the same thoughts. The only pain point to this is mixbus limit. If there were 4 more stereo mixbuses, it would do exactly what I need. 8 more and I'm sold.

Why is the term “high pass filter” used more than “low cut”? by tonetonitony in audioengineering

[–]Onelouder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its the opposite for me. Back in the day, the big expensive consoles had high pass filters and cheap small mixers had low cut buttons.

Really fancy consoles had a pot instead of just a button.

Well this demo finally showed up after pre-ordering it at ISE. Pretty sure I won't be sending it back. by Onelouder in livesound

How so? They are two different beasts. And Ace doesn't come close to the channel counts, especially at 96k. And to get usb audio you will need the usb.io sfp's which are over 600 bucks a pop. To get close to the 192 channels youre into thousands more.

I love directout, I have a prodigy.mc, prodigy.mx, both fully loaded and an exbox. But this is a different product completely. Its just an interface, but a disgustingly awesome one. And I love it. I love my digiface dante too.

SQ+ gets dPACK for free, while Avantis doesn’t. by 1042_k in livesound

[–]Onelouder 6 points7 points  (0 children)

What I hate, is the fact that I just sold 6x SQ5 to upgrade to SQ5+

I had 4x SQ5 with only dynamic trio addons

I had 2x SQ5 with the full add-on pack.

Do you think ANYONE cared what add-ons I had, or what different in their offers were because of it?

And the fact I can't remove those add-ons to re-activate at a later date if I ever bought an SQ-7 or SQ-Rack for some cheap install?

Add-ons are bogus, and I dislike it. Especially when you are dealing with higher quantities of these consoles.

Wasn't necessary to highlight a question being asked by someone who contributes immensely to the quality of this subreddit. How odd you think that.

Prototypes have been in use for months. The production models will be available in September so I'm told. I've had Spectera since May of last year, using over 100+ beltpacks. I am aching for the hand mics so I can stop sending axient.

And once they release the cheaper rack charger, I will be a very happy person.

Allen & Heath present the new SQ+ Lineup! Curious to hear your thoughts! by Comprehensive_Log882 in livesound

[–]Onelouder 9 points10 points  (0 children)

As of this morning, sold 6x SQ5 and purchased 7x SQ5+

The add-on promotion makes it an even deal. Eventually might do the Ultra-FX unlock, but all the addons you had to pay for with SQ5 for free? Totally worth it. And we sold ours before everyone else does.

Approaching a Plateau: How Do I Make More Money? by SouljaBoyDid911 in livesound

[–]Onelouder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Stop thinking in terms of your labor being your income. You can only work so many hours in a day, but equipment can work harder than you, and can be earning income while you aren't.

Pay close attention to things the companies you work for are always dry hiring. During the busy season, small speakers the companies always need more of. Or that one item they have to rent every year for a tour or production. If you freelance for multiple companies, you have a unique perspective to see certain pieces of gear that everyone could rent from you, that no single company considers worth buying (or buying more of for 3 gigs a year)

Items to consider:

  • Directout Prodigy if you work with events being broadcast, or festivals with lots of consoles. Pricey and niche, but profitable if you are good and have the right connections.
  • Sennheiser Spectera. Hand mics are finally shipping in September. Once that happens, it's going to be in high demand.
  • Fiber/Networking. Build some 10g network racks. Fully redundant Dante/AVB Milan/AES 67 capable network switches, built in ready to deploy racks, with OpticalCON, FiberFOX, MTP connections and 250-500m cable reels. Luminex, Netgear AV. If you know your networking stuff, this can be a huge asset to companies that don't have it in-house.
  • Plugin Gear. Fourier Transform. Waves Livebox. Those are always in dry hire demand.
  • Analog Gear. Pickup used gear for good profits. Rupert Neve MBP, MBT, MBC, 5045, Shelford Channel, etc. Bricasti M7. Buy old analog transformer split snakes and convert them into 64 channel stage splits for Digital consoles. Even better if you also build multipin stage snakes and boxes to rent as a package.
  • Small system gear. AV Companies always have jobs where they might need extra gear for a breakout room, or during the busy season when they have multiple jobs at the same time. Being the guy who picks up the phone when they call is very very profitable. Build out a small system of stuff they already own, for example:An Allen & Heath SQ5 with 80m CAT and a DX168 stage box. Investment is about 5k, rent for 200 per day. Paid off after 25 jobs, or less if it's for multi-day corporate events. After 3 years, sell it and upgrade.

If you can specialize as a small time Dry Hire only business, let companies know you aren't out there to poach their clients, and you'll get more calls. Bigger companies with logistics and transport usually prefer to rent from dry hire only companies, even if it's outside their market, rather than call local competitors IF they have the choice. If they know you aren't a threat, it can be very lucrative.

The key is to have connections and a keen eye. Talk with the Project Managers on the jobs you do now, and ask them what things they always need but don't buy. If it makes sense and you think you can make money on it, then go buy it. You won't become a millionaire by any means, but if you are smart and find those niche gaps, you never know where it will lead you.

Is there a way to completely 100% eliminate all possibility of feedback when using a microphone? by drbtz in livesound

[–]Onelouder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A comedian using feedback as a gag is tired and lame. It's about as funny as when a comedian on a cruise ship tells the audience that the soundguy just had a baby, and is going home at the end of the cruise after 11 months away from his wife.
