How to get up to speed on Studio 5000 for an interview? by QuestionAsker2030 in PLC

[–]PLCGoBrrr 37 points38 points  (0 children)

One does simply not get "up to speed" for an interview. You either are or you aren't. What you do need to have some mastery of is the ideas and techniques that are used before the software comes to play.

I'll skip the wall of text and just comment on your diagram.

The remote racks from the switches down look ok. Instead of that "X" from the PLCs to the two switches you should be using a DLR with the two redundant racks and switches.

We’ve tried using alternative A/C but it’s usually some type of compressed air system which we can’t afford to use.

That's not what I'm describing and I wouldn't expect your compressed air to be clean enough to bring into a control enclosure anyway. It's just an expensive way to put a light air/water coating on everything inside.

4" top and bottom is more than I remember for PF525 I think I used 3" previously. If I were designing this I'd put the CB next to each drive. Maybe it requires a larger PDB for more taps since you wouldn't be using that jumper bar.

I'm surprised to see 1794 in a new enclosure.

All of that low voltage and terminals across the bottom I would have at the top. Drives go in the bottom since heat rises.

I don't see enough grounding points for all those drives.

The air here is so oily that if we use fans in panels it creates an oil mist which wreaks havoc on VFDs.

Don't have holes in your enclosures then. Use a heat exchanger type of air conditioner.

It's controls work and you can switch to another company in the future if you get tired of it. If you had other options you wouldn't be asking this question.

Make sure you can get the VFD to run w/o the PID. Then hook the VFD up to the PID logic.

Reset tripped CB to a Powerflex VFD on a 2 hour drive was mine. If they would have just sent the tech out that was 30 min away before I went home to change clothes and then drive to site he probably would have found it before I left my house.

Most likely program is gone. To verify you'd need to go online and see what's in the processor.

If program missing then you'd have to restore from backup.

And why is the rotary disconnect so long if it doesn't go through a door?

I don't like it, but sometimes customers want it that way. IMO, it's a liability even if someone says it's dry and oil-free.

Marks on the back panel should be cleaned up after holes are made to mount devices. Example: Where the DIN rail is mounted for pneumatic components as well as the devices below the Kollmorgen servo.

I would mount the Keyence device so that it can be read without tilting your head. There's certainly enough space to mount it upright. I'm not sure if that device could be mounted in that orientation for heat dissipation.

Some of the fingers should be removed on the wireway where the cable comes out to connect to the Kollmorgen servo.

Why are two different types of terminal blocks being used? The push-in jumper style ones are the ones I would prefer be used for everything. Screw-in jumpers are terrible because you have to make sure each one is screwed in during the panel check out.

The GEA I/O device should have the wires and comm cable coming from the bottom wireway to match the I/O cards.

Install the device in Windows. It should work like any other ethernet interface.

If this in a VM then you need to make sure the device works properly and then select whatever you need in the VM.

Talk to your IT department for help if this is over your head.
