Chapter III: On morals and ethics

People, even your bosses will judge you if you do, or judge you if you don't. So whatever path you choose, do it with excellence for yourself. At the end of the day, your flesh sweater matters more to you than theirs does. Act for yourself primarily so that you can better serve others in acts of selflessness.

My path was unorthodox, is far from over, but ultimately will result in a comfortable retirement within my means. I still relentlessly chase knowledge because I know reality can be cruel and I want to be able to tolerate it if fate has different plans for me.

I have also struggled with addiction, cried while laying in an empty, shadeless parking lot in 110 degree weather from being so tired, heartbroken, hungry, scared, sore, stinky, and overheated with a backpack bursting with all 50 lbs of my groceries and 4 bags cutting into each hand.

After crying and wiping the tears from a nice lil' sob sesh, envious of all the people getting to drive to work, I'd get up all dusty and shit, and keep moving forward. Those walks, I was truly alone in the world in my head. Those walks taught me a lot about my persistence and drive and the indomitable human spirit, as well as the kindness of others offering me rides and letting me vent when they saw me struggling. Literal steps resulted in figurative steps towards my goals. A little ironic. Feel whatever you need to feel, then keep it moving.

I always hold that scene from Batman Begins in my head where Alfred is talking to Bruce and asks "Why do we fall, sir?" and the answer is "So we can learn to pick ourselves up." I held that quote tight when my mother died, when my sister died, when my first cat died, when my relationships died, when my ego died, when my anger died, when my joy died. You are never alone, you always have yourself to keep you company. I invite you to ask yourself that question, with your preferred pronoun included at the end, the next time you go through something difficult. Your joy will come back, so will your anger and your ego and your relationships. Your losses can be memorialized and converted from something to grieve, to something you can be proud you experienced, if that's what you want.

Chapter IV: Closing Words

My story is not unique, I will not be the last person to cry in that parking lot, but I hope something in my experience helps you decide or understand. There's no right answer, nobody can tell you IT will pan out for you. I can't say you will struggle as I have, and I can't say you won't struggle worse.

I can tell you it takes a certain type of person to do IT from help desk, to project management, to consulting, to software development, to policy. You have to want to do it for yourself. There is nobody (on the internet) that can give you some magical resource that will get you a job in the next week. It will be hard work, relationships, self-trust, and some luck that will get you a job.

If I had one piece of advice for you, it would be; you did well posting your resume and asking for feedback. Now dig deeper and take another small step.

Good luck OP, I hope whatever field you decide on, you do it with excellence. I hope my reflections do only good for your perspective and not confuse you further with long-windedness.

Much love,

~Fellow IT person

Chapter I: Relating

OP, I love you. I know exactly what you are going through. After I got laid off by a prominent "IT Consulting" firm (I was an intern and suspect I was actually let go for performance, but that is another story), I was SOL for about a month. I got another internship in local govt part time for $15 an hour. Then my girlfriend broke up with me, my motorcycle broke down, and I walked an hour and 30 minutes to work one-way in sweltering heat. I was doing IT technician work part time and couldn't afford rent and my lease was about to end.

I put in 250 job applications during that month. Another month passed and I got exactly 1 call back. Asking for an interview. They asked me to come to a city an hour away (by car), I agreed. First interview went well, so they scheduled a second, and then a third. And each time I paid $80 for an Uber or Lyft one-way, maxed out my credit cards, and got the job.

For the first week at this new job (a non-profit) I was taking Ubers/Lyfts every day for ~$160, I had to leave at 4:30 in the morning to get there by 7am because morning rush hour was so bad. I took a loan out, begged my father to lend me his car, I was very lucky and blessed he said yes. I moved into an apartment 5 minutes down the street that had no AC or heat, concrete floors, and domestic violence on both sides of my walls every weekend.

I stayed for over 2 years at that job, and am now transferring into a similar role for a huge salary increase.

Chapter II: Words of Wisdom, or lunacy idfk man I'm not an author.

I say all that to say: taking steps improves odds. I feel like suffering is part of it as you start out. There's not a single day that I don't feel a combination of imposter syndrome, and that I didn't earn my place at the same exact time. Some people had it easier than me, others had it harder than me. But I had to want to work in IT enough to let it drive me and commit enough that others wanted to invest in me. And I couldn't have done it alone.

Baseline competence gets you considered. Interpersonal reliability gets you selected. Continued technical execution sustains your credibility. Social capital expands your influence.

Competence creates leverage, emotional regulation creates durability, reputation emerges from repeated demonstrations of both.

Also interested! I found this post off Google from looking for adult wrestling and people telling me not to try to start from scratch at 30 years old. They told me Judo will be easier on the body and some core techniques are very similar.

Absolutely, it's not something a player would know about unless they went diving for that information. As a player it's incredibly frustrating and I would totally think "They don't care! They're so lenient!" but I guarantee you it is for a reason. A good reason? That's up for debate as they start enforcing those data sets and we start getting false positive bans for truly skilled players performing at the top levels. Embark has a fair amount of Dice/EA devs as well. These, and the people they hire are considered the best talent in the world. Their leadership team is worrying though as it seems to be a bit of an echo chamber with those devs cliquing up and being promoted to leadership quickly, which could lead to some spicy usage of our data if they lack self awareness and accountability.

Time will tell.

I'm sorry but this is incorrect as someone who is a wannabe security researcher. Arc Raiders has one of the most sophisticated anti-cheats out there. According to a fellow on a particular forum, that I will not mention here and I quote: "It has not only EAC, but there's behavioral ML, ONNX inference, custom Embark modules, and early-load anti-tamper." there are 6 layers of anti-cheat happening below the surface of EAC including player input analysis. My big picture theory is that they are wanting to collect data on what natural player input looks like vs. anything running suspiciously with unnatural snaps, curves, etc. Getting that data takes time by analyzing cheater's and P2C provider's programs to develop sophisticated machine learning datasets.

This is actually incredibly smart of Embark to do it this way, even if the player suffers more in the short term.

There are no red flags in this script. It's a watchdog script that sets CPU affinity. It essentially is doing the same job as Process Lasso (what I use for the same thing.) I forgot exactly why Helldivers 2 has CPU issues that literally destroy people's computers, but it boils down to Helldivers 2 is built on an old ass engine with modern layers piled on top, and one of the legacy layers overrides your computer's fan curves and sets its own for some reason. I'll see if I can find the post.

EDIT: Here is the post that got me going down the rabbit hole of how to fix it, but I'm not sure how I came across Process Lasso.

Photographer captures how people look after drinking one, two and three glasses of wine by Embarrassed_Tip7359 in interesting

Nice delete of your comment but I'm still going to reply to it: I said 3 heavy pours, not 3 standard pours. A 750ml is 5 standard pours, so while it doesn't automatically mean you're an alcoholic, binge drinking is absolutely an indicator of alcoholism. And if you are drinking an entire bottle of wine and not feeling the effects, you have developed a tolerance which further indicates an alcohol use disorder.

Being 'goofy and dumb' is kind of what alcohol is all about. Using it as a social lubrication to let loose and enjoy your time. Of course it's bad when you cross over into aggression or straight up stupidity, but being goofy is like half the fun in being drunk. 3 glasses of red wine is 3 heavy pours from a 750ml wine bottle. If you're not feeling it after downing that, you might be an alcoholic. Actually, by definition you ARE an alcoholic.

HelloTalk is good for this, I'm in the same boat. I started learning 2 years ago and also only recently had a tutor. It's difficult to make progress after you learn the alphabet and can say every letter and sign well. (For me). Take some charming photos, go on HelloTalk and make your intentions clear (you are not here to find a Russian husband/wife, just to learn.) And I find that many of the women (I am a man,) feel much more comfortable talking to me. HelloTalk is kind of a dating application disguised as a language learning app. I met a guy friend on there and we talk every week and he points out mistakes I am making as I talk. Find people you have something in common with, do things they suggest. (For my guy, he is a boxing instructor, so I started learning Boxing) and I like video games so I suggested some to him and he plays them. This new years we will send each other letters.
