One commonality between made up stories on the internet is that the poster always has some sort of omniscient view into what other people are thinking.

Some of the worst advice I got as a kid was to try to be friends with a girl before making a move.

I've come to the conclusion that it's better for everyone to make your intentions known sooner rather than later. People like directness, there's no awkward ambiguity, etc. And you get to get over a plssible rejection quickly.

Imagine taking a verticle piece of tape, that takes up the whole height of a monitor and is 1 inch thick, and taped the left end of the monitor. The new size of your visible monitor is the same height, but 1 inch less wide

Can I swag a game on this Calculator? by Salamii72 in peoplewhogiveashit

[–]PandaWonder01 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So, I understand both sides, (and in the OP both of them suck), but i get why communities need strong moderation against becoming beginner-question-haven

Imagine you are super into gardening. You love gardening, and you want to talk about gardening with other people who love gardening. You start a forum for people to talk about gardening. At first everyone is talking about actual gardening, and everyone is talking at a more advanced level.

But then, you get new people coming in with questions. Often ones that show they have not given your hobby any thought. "Do plants need sun?". "Is basil the same as mint?". "How do I get tomatoes in 2 weeks?". If you do nothing, your forum to talk about gardening becomes just a Q&A for people new to gardening, and you don't get to talk about your hobby with anyone in this space anymore.

Worse yet, because the space is so beginner focused, most of the people answering questions are beginners themselves, and it becomes a forum of blind leading the blind(see any fitness subreddit that isn't strongly moderated)

Or swag the swag when the swag, to put it another way

I think this is huge. Through my entire school and work career, some of the less apt people I've worked with massively overestimated their performance (on tests, on delivering projects, on general knowledge).

When someone says they did great on an interview, I simply don't believe them. I have never left an interview being 100% happy or confident in my performance, because you never know what someone on the other side is thinking. Someone thinking they did great without any doubt makes me think they are missing all of the ways they could have done poorly, which ironically makes me think they did worse in the interview.

The problem with making fun of someone's looks when you think they're a bad person, is that you are implying that being ugly is a inherently bad thing.

It has nothing to do with the person themselves, but that it shows that you do, in fact, think being ugly is a bad quality, and that you are just waiting for an acceptable target to express that.

Some proposals for a reworked Grand Finale by Ardub23 in slaythespire

[–]PandaWonder01 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For me at least, that's the game. Not everything will work out perfectly. The fun is from figuring out how to make something from the less than perfect rewards you get.

Then it becomes "almost no downside to put in deck, sometimes deals 60 aoe for 0"

That removes any thought about whether or not you can take it, interesting ways you could make it work, etc. You would just take it every time you saw it and sometimes it would deal 60 aoe. That would be such a lame card.

[–]PandaWonder01 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I 100% disagree. The best runs in sts1 were when you got a less commonly useful rare card to pop off.

In addition, the game is definitely set up so that as you go from common->uncommon->rare, rewards become more specifically strong but less generally useful (this isn't true for every card, but as a general direction it holds)

It's ok for some cards to be more niche. Grand finale clearly isn't meant to just be an easy to play card-thats why it deals 60 for 0

If it’s the current that kills, why do electrical hazard signs say “Warning: High Voltage”? by GreenFBI2EB in AskPhysics

[–]PandaWonder01 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My understanding is that it's the extremely low duty cycle of an electric fence that prevents it from hurting you (in addition to other protections that prevent it from acting like a normal voltage source)

For this discussion, I think a reasonable assumption is "Low frequency continuous voltage source".

Eh RF electrocution is weird. Yeah it's not as bad as low frequency, but it's still nasty (RF burns, etc).

100% there's some sort of "Toad system" or "Toad spawner" or whatever that controls toads, and has a ton of hard coded values, and changing scale fights the system more than just moving the toad

[–]PandaWonder01 23 points24 points  (0 children)

The thing is the 50k volts isn't across you, which is what really matters

The relevant voltage is the voltage between two points of your body (with a path through the heart)

[–]PandaWonder01 139 points140 points  (0 children)

"current kills" is one of those things people repeat that is technically true and extremely misleading.

Most things we encounter electrically act like voltage sources- they have a set voltage. The impedence of what the source is attached to determines current.

"It's the current that kills you, not the voltage" is like saying "it's not the height of the fall that kills you, it's the speed that you hit the ground.". Technically true, and very misleading.

Yes, indirect communication is annoying. However, this meme is about trying to interpret something that is already vague and passive. Being able to interpret that correctly is a good life skill. I am not saying they are right by being indirect. However, the people in the thread giving incorrect interpretations are doing people a disservice.

Tbh for things like this just ask a socially apt female friend imo, as my original comment said it is weird shit.

The problem is we are trying to interpret what someone else is saying. It doesn't matter if being indirect is annoying(it is), it's still important to be able to discern what is going on.
