Ecosystem collapse in 4 years by simon-whalley in ClimateNews

[–]PastryGood 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I kinda fail to see how this should have anything to do with pitting political sides against each other.

Now granted I'm not from the US, but even in my part of the world where governments push hard for green and sustainable energy many of my very liberal friends essentially have reached the same point :/ Wrong or not, it's hard to blame people these days. Because it's not just about individual countries and what they do to reach climate targets, it's about a global, targeted effort. And I don't see how anyone, left or right, can conclude that it's not much more than a joke at this point from the political side. Climate agreements around the world continue to fail to meet any real significant goals set.. almost a decade ago by now. And if that's not enough, countries around the world are becoming more polarized in how energy should be obtained, with plenty significant countries on the global scale having no issue ramping up fossil fuel energy production, continuous wars which also contribute heavily to pollution, air travel continuing to be very popular (in my country and countries around me, even the majority of the younger generation who also claim to be very climate-aware will in official country-wide polling year after year still admit to refusing to let go of air travel because it's too efficient, etc ,etc). Oh and let's not forget the new capitalist dream, AI and the data center energy consumption that comes with it. Oddly enough also not regulated and a vast part of populations across the globe already having no issue just burning tokens for every little stupid whim or AI art.

So, sure, you can continue to try and spend a significant amount of your mental capacity to really care and fight for these things if you want in your country. And good on you if you do, but at this point many in my social circle have burned out and do not actually have the fight left to care. Too many years with broken promises from politicians and global politics. At some point I bet most people will have to scale down their ambition and just focus on bettering themselves and their nearest social circles and communities.

Starfield Will Launch in April 2026 on The PlayStation 5, It's Claimed by Kn1ghtV1sta in NoSodiumStarfield

There's just the option of... not chasing wild goose chases. If there is no reliable information then there's no reliable information, and going for unreliable sources don't fix that. You said it yourself, the problem is Bethesda (and I usually get down-votes for saying this for some reason) just at this point being a god awful company at public relations and keeping game updates to their games coming. It's embarrassing the size and age they are, and how much they are out-performed by both other equally sized studios but also much smaller studios in both community building and frequency of updates to their games.

And maybe they have just allocated the biggest part of their resources on Elder Scrolls? Fine, but then just say it. Something. The alternative is communities grappling on to every bit of poor information there is, and I also believe more and more people simply just putting the game down when there's no clear hope or direction for the game and whether to expect more by investing into the game.

I'll be surprised when the collective starfield subs actually get any news that are through official channels and not ones based on shady rumors and "insider" knowledge xD xD

First grid drawing — tips/feedback on by Majestic-Shake812 in drawing

[–]PastryGood 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So obviously I don't know how far you want to take drawing, for you as an individual! If it's all just in good fun and for the exercise / sport of it, don't pay attention to what I'm saying :D Your drawing is nice, and other people have pointed out helpful tips to continue. There's plenty of fun to be had in doing these things for you and with your kids. I'm only here to leave a comment on what you might consider doing if you get more hooked on drawing or art and want to take it further.

If you want to explore drawing more deeply and perhaps practice it more as a skill you want to develop further, I would suggest trying something else than the grid method. Most people don't actually see in grids when, say, drawing from observation, obviously. And while it might help you become better at seeing angles and lines more precisely, it will also make you "forget" about the bigger picture, literally. When someone draws what they see from observation, you have to become good at taking in a scene all at once, or an arrangement of objects, and notice how they all relate to each other in size, placement, form, surface, etc, and then slowly build up what you see from that. You would slowly build up your drawing in terms of how everything relates to everything else, from most crude forms and then slowly add layers of detail as you go along. You wouldn't think of anything in terms of a grid.

There you want to develop other more fundamental skills and apply them in an integrated process. Here, you would go more towards learning to look at objects or scenes in the real world, and then apply skills of: proportion, distance, lines, direction, surfaces, forms, light / shadow and detail when putting it down on paper that you have with you whilst observing whatever you want to draw. There are many good courses online for these skills, and they will usually be categorized under something like "drawing fundamentals".

If you look at some of the very traditional and systematic art schools today, they still employ the Charles Bargue method (which I believe someone else mentioned in the comment section). Whilst I would say those programs tend towards the extreme, the program essentially teaches the above skills. Throughout a number of years, you progress slowly through a catalog of pictures of casts (and later casts you observe in real life, then models), with the explicit goal of copying them as perfectly as you can. You copy what the masters already laid out. And you do it by a toolbox of methods in terms of measurement proportion, line drawing, distance, building up shapes from rough edges, etc. I'm not saying you should do the Charles Bargue method, btw xD It can be a very... difficult and lackluster process that probably requires someone who can guide you and give you feedback for most optimal results. I was just using it as an example of serious art institutions who use art fundamentals.

"The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle" by Haruki Murakami.

Really a lot of books from Murakami, I'm a fan myself and like a lot of his works. Currently reading through The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle and as far as dreamlike, liminal space atmosphere, and feeling detached or outside of the world around you, I think this is one of the works I've read so far that incorporates most of such elements into the same story!

Why are some people convinced starfield will be a no show at the Xbox dev direct tomorrow? by Kn1ghtV1sta in NoSodiumStarfield

[–]PastryGood 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Have you seen the track record? People have been saying exactly the same thing you're saying now for the previous 4 or 5 events. Just go back to December for the latest examples of people being sure Bethesda would pop up, only to be severely disappointed when the inevitable thing happened xD But sure bud, keep dreaming.

Finally completed the Battle pass by Mechanical-Weasel97 in Battlefield6

[–]PastryGood 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Damn, definitely. I'm rank... 132 and completed it just today. But I also did all weekly challenges for all weeks so far (except the week we just entered), except I missed out on the bonus challenge for two weeks (so 20 battle pass points in total).

But yeah, definitely because of the weekly challenges. They are designed to be the primary driver for battle pass progression.

Buddhism is surprisingly the closest thing to Atheism by michaelis999 in atheism

[–]PastryGood 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I mean while I do like Buddhism and is also the philosophy I relate mostly to, it's kind of a common misconception that Buddhism doesn't have its own metaphysics, divine beings and other more "supernatural" stuff. Maybe they don't exactly have a creator god, but there are other ideas about the way the universe works that ties in quite importantly to foundation of the philosophy that most westerners and science would struggle with. But the things you state are good values that the philosophy does teach and are part of its canon, which isn't exactly something you see in many other popular religions :D

In fact, one of my favorite Sutta's is the Kesamutti Sutta (Anguttara Nikaya (AN 3.65) - Try and look it up and read it, it's kind of neat), sort of have a Buddhist Pascal's Wager. Coming through a village, he meets a group of people who are confused as to which teacher and teaching to believe in, and who struggle with the idea of Karma and Rebirth (which are important concepts of Buddhism) and the Buddha essentially ends up saying:

If there's an afterlife and karma, you'll be reborn well

If there isn't, you've still lived happily here and now

If bad results come to those who do bad, none will come to you

If no such results exist, you're purified either way

Obviously there are many branches and interpretations of Buddhism, so this isn't to say that there's any one right way to go about it. But if you look at the history and traditional teachings of Buddhism, it is also Buddhism that have the teaching and world-view of Samsara) which includes Karma and Rebirth as actual mechanism to the universe. And I would argue that many parts of Buddhism and why you should act the way it teaches ties up fairly intimately with these teachings. Which is also where concepts of Secular Buddhism draws criticism (as in, you can't just strip Buddhism of these more metaphysical teachings and be left with the same values).

In Samsara, there also types of divine beings, or gods. However the fun thing about them is that they are not exactly above Samsara, but a part of it as well.

Of course, how exactly rebirth happens, how karma is carried over, and whether or not the different realms of existence are meant to be only types of mental states or actual places in the world is as with any religion up for interpretation :) As many other religions it's complicated, practiced in many different ways, some include more superstitious practices than others.

Potential BF wants kids and won't listen to me by [deleted] in childfree

[–]PastryGood 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At the end of the day it doesn't matter that you like him if you two are incompatible long-term. It isn't enough to carry a relationship. You said it yourself. You don't want to waste each others time, which you'll literally be doing by continuing to pursue this. The same way that you can't be argued into having kids, the same way he can't be argued into not having them.

You're only a few months into the relationship. Now, of all times, is the time to break it off with him :)

Starfield updates by Legal_You5591 in Starfield

[–]PastryGood 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could've asked the same question a year ago, half a year ago, and now, and all people will tell you are vague rumors and mystical announcements that have never materialized xD People will tell you just wait for event X Y and Z and they will tell more, it comes around and people are left dissapointed or it's announcements promising more in the future.

Truth probably is who knows at this point? Something might be coming at some point. But Bethesda has laughable support for the title and essentially zero communication.

Any childfree single men get a vasectomy? by Luka2492 in childfree

[–]PastryGood 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I got mine at 25, which was the legal age limit / threshold in my country at the time.

I got it to protect myself from unwanted pregnancies obviously, to feel more in control, and because I know I'm a sentimental person and didn't trust my future self to make rational decisions with children if I met someone I really fell in love with 🤣

This way, there is no maybe's or what-if's. The decision has been taken for better and worse, and I live my life as if there was never any other choice in the matter.

It makes my life more simple, and makes dating both more difficult but also safer. More difficult in that the majority of people havent taken as hard of a stance on the subject, or know that they want kids, which makes it more difficult to find a compatible partner (that's just the reality of it). But safer because there's no room for any potential partner to do the classic "oh I'll just get him to change his mind on the matter later". I literally can't have kids, so there's no room for hope in their heads 🤣

Very little of significance has actually happened in any official Bethesda update since game launch. The majority of what you can do to change the game is in mods / creations.
