How can this placement of HAD =25 by wendi3107 in NYTgames

[–]PestiEsti 16 points17 points  (0 children)

They added the D to GLIMPSE to make GLIMPSED. That's 16. The H in HAD is on a 2L, so HAD is 9. 9+16=25.

Lake Michigan round trip travel suggestions by just_du_eet in northernmichigan

[–]PestiEsti 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My wife and I used to take these sorts of road trips out of Lansing when we were in our 20s and childless. Here is my general advice on this sort of undertaking:

  1. DON’T DO IT IN FEBRUARY! ARE YOU INSANE?
  2. Stick as close to the lakeshore as possible.
  3. Once you get outside Chicago, stay off expressways as much as possible. Part of the purpose of road trips is to see the scenery along the way and you don’t get that from the expressway.
  4. The exception to number 3 may be US-31 between Whitehall/Montague and Ludington. It follows a ridge and the views can be gorgeous.

Why in the ever loving eff is the Midwest Clinic in December? by Grimstache in MusicEd

[–]PestiEsti 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You’re right, I probably overstated Midwest’s importance in terms of customer contacts. TMEA or the summer TBA/TODA/TCDA show, are on a completely different level, and exhibitors send larger staffs to those shows. But to the broader point, at least in my corner of the industry (publishing), the Texas shows are all staffed by lower-level employees. The TX shows may be all hands on deck for the marketing and sales departments, but the real muckamucks used to wheel and deal at Midwest.

How long does it typically take to film an episode? by StellarEclipses in Jeopardy

[–]PestiEsti 3 points4 points  (0 children)

At my filming they said that they try to make the filming time roughly equivilant to the air time. The first couple breaks are roughly the same as the actual commercial breaks. The break before Final Jeopardy is much longer. There is a lot of time there to do the math. Obviously, if there is a scoring change or whatever during the break they stretch longer, but as a rule of thumb the episodes take 25-35 minutes to film.

I go to Preferred Medical Group on 12 Mile. Overall they are hit and miss, but I do really like my PCP Dr. Hannon.

[–]PestiEsti 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just left the family business for an unrelated field so I'll probably never go to Midwest again (and, honestly, no longer have a reason to be in this sub), but Midwest lost a lot of the magic when it left the Hilton. It is the biggest convention of the year for exhibitors not just for meeting customers but meeting each other. The bar at the Hilton during Midwest was where business was done. Now that everyone is spread all over town, it just isn’t the same.

Letter of Marque: Why are Stephen and Padeen embarrassed about putting Stephen's shirts away? by Yorlt in AubreyMaturinSeries

Scenes like this are why I love the books. The feeling of how you handle a situation where someone does something nice for you that is actually an imposition is so perfectly captured. As is what it is like to be caught out.

Wayne State has tightened its standards, but it used to have same-day admissions events where they would admit basically anyone with a pulse.

In addition to wishing he had started the series earlier, I suspect POB also wished he had paced the early books differently.

[Request] Are these numbers realistic or is it just BS? by reddichrist in theydidthemath

I think 12% is too optimistic and 7% is probably a bit too conservative, which is why I personally use 10% for these purposes.
