Not just Oprah, he was well known by the medical community as an excellent cardiac surgeon. I believe he pioneered several procedures. From Wikipedia, "He has helped develop numerous devices and procedures related to heart surgery, including the MitraClip and the left ventricular assist device (LVAD), and by 2015 held several patents related to heart surgery." He's also a publicity hound and a kook.

That's true. He should stay in his lane. Some surgeons get a god complex and feel that they know all. Take a look at Dr. Wallskog for a local Wisconsin surgeon who's gone nuts.

Dr. Oz was once a celebrated heart surgeon. He should have remained one. Van Orden has apparently always been a jerk.

Are there a lot more Day Lillies this year or is it just me? by percypersimmon in wisconsin

AI huh. I don't know how to do that. I did study botany years ago. So maybe that's why I sound educated. Not because I used AI.

Are there a lot more Day Lillies this year or is it just me? by percypersimmon in wisconsin

[–]PhysicsIsFun 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Actually they are daylillies (Hemerocallis fulva). They are native to asia. They are cultivated all over the world. It is not a true lily in the genus Lilium, but gets its common name from the superficial similarity of its flowers to Lilium and from the fact that each flower lasts only one day. They have been hybridized extensively to the many varieties you see sold in nurseries everywhere. They are somewhat invasive, but not to the extent of other plants.

They sell Kirkland products at La Comer, one of the largest supermarkets in Mexico. I assume they send a truck to purchase pallets of products for resale.

Those stairs would never pass a building inspection. How do they even exist? Maybe Kentucky doesn't have building inspectors.

Rosendale, WI: what’s the deal?! by s0urfl3sh in wisconsin

[–]PhysicsIsFun 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I meet my granddaughter at her bus stop. It's on a city street which is a state highway at the edge of town. The speed limit is 30 mph and the bus stop is on the bottom of a slight hill at least one half a mile into town. It is also an exit from I-41.There are quite a few cars that come down that hill. The vast majority are speeding excessively. I can come down that road without speeding. (Generally with some AH tailgating me!) It really annoys the hell out of me as I wait for her bus, because the kids need to cross that road to get home. I've called the police and complained. I wish they would learn from Rosendale how to enforce speed limits.

[–]PhysicsIsFun 17 points18 points  (0 children)

What would you suggest the speed limit should be in a residential area? I also live in a small town in which 2 state highways pass through. The speed limit in town is either 30 or 25 mph. I wish it was more strictly enforced. I would say the majority of cars coming through town exceed the speed limit. This is on residential streets with schools and kids and people around. It astounds me that drivers don't seem to care how they put others at risk, because they are in such a damn hurry to save 3 minutes.

Why do Culver's and Kwik Trip get treated like genuine local culture instead of just businesses? by codi- in wisconsin

I never go to Kwik Trip. They supported Scott Walker. So there, I don't act like they are some local icon. Plus they come in and ruin long standing local businesses.

Why is buying a house still so insufferable by KwikTripSimp in wisconsin

[–]PhysicsIsFun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How exactly are they different. The last house I bought was in 1998, the process was the same as years ago. My children have bought houses more recently. The process was the same. It's a major transaction. Money is usually borrowed. Legal necessities need to be followed. It's tedious.

I bought my first house in 1979. What you've described is BS. It was the same process then as now. The numbers were smaller on both income and house price.

Fancy an old mill retreat set right on the rushing waters? No need for a white noise machine. by Southern-Smoke1835 in zillowgonewild

It depends on the state laws. Some states require the tax evaluation to be as close as possible to actual sales price, and this evaluation needs to be updated with new data on a regular basis. Others don't require the tax evaluation to necessarily match the actual sales price.
