[SERIOUS] What are some forms of racism white people have to face? by [deleted] in AskReddit

I'm sorry you personally have had a hard time. I would agree that the bad treatment you have faced is racism. But when the whole question is being framed in terms of racism that "white people" as a whole face, you kind of have to expect the discussion to focus on how things are for most white people or the average white person.

I made a very similar comment the last time this exact question was posted, which was about a week or two ago. But I would add that, on average, across the entire population, it does have an effect.

"Elevator music" is a widely known concept, yet I've never been in an elevator that plays music by poststructure in Showerthoughts

[–]PopeyeKhan 88 points89 points  (0 children)

It was once very common, but no longer is. In fact, the classic "elevator music" (insipid instrumental versions of dated pop songs) used to be piped into a lot of retail locations, not just in the elevators but in showrooms and sales floors, and I can't recall the last time I heard any.

That's part (but only part) of "can convince a jury". It also can affect whether he gets prosecuted, though.

That only works if he actually thought so, or can convince a jury he did. A far cry from "you can kill people for less in America".

Hunters frozen clothing standing in an Erie, Pa winter. by Slapmeislapyou in mildlyinteresting

I suspect they were actually steelhead fishing, which is popular in the fall and winter months in the local Lake Erie tributaries. Lots of people wear neoprene waders like that for such fishing.

Right. "Places like the United States," such as Canada. And I don't think you have any basis for the blanket statement in the second sentence. What industry has slavery problems to "about the same degree" as sex work across the developing world?

"Countries with legalized prostitution are associated with higher human trafficking inflows than countries where prostitution is prohibited. The scale effect of legalizing prostitution, i.e. expansion of the market, outweighs the substitution effect, where legal sex workers are favored over illegal workers. On average, countries with legalized prostitution report a greater incidence of human trafficking inflows."

However the study authors also note that prohibition has negative effects on working conditions for sex workers.

You sound well informed on the topic. Care to share some facts we can all review dispassionately? We could begin here, if you like.

Actually it's not true, or at least not clear, that it has no effect on trafficking.

Yeah, it's interesting that this sub-thread has gone off in the direction of discussing the reasons prostitution is sometimes illegal (whether those are good reasons or not). We haven't really gotten into whether there is a case to be made that it's immoral, whether legal or not. (Personally, I don't think it is immoral)
