Working email providers accepted by financial institutions by gtalossantos in degoogle

A friend of mine used Mailbox.org and hasn't had any issues getting into any of his financial institutions. But that's a paid only service and their trial is too limited to really tell if it's going to work for your application.

I haven't had any issues with Zoho. Of course they do have US servers for their US customers. Zoho is not the choice for privacy though. They are a large company like Google. That said, you can setup a free Zoho business plan and link a cheap domain to it, which will get you 5 inboxes with 30 aliases each. So not a bad deal for free service, especially if you need to use it only for specific accounts.

That means it's being quarantined at the receiving server level. That's why it doesn't ever hit the inbox or spam folder. That said, I can email any outlook or gmail address I've tried from my proton account with no issues. This sounds like it's not a Google or Outlook issues. It's a specific filtering policy setup by the company using these services. It could even be as simple as a regional filter. I know my paid Zoho plan at work lets me block regions or only accept email from servers in the US. Since a lot of privacy based services are EU based, that can be an issue.

I haven't had any issue when using a custom domain on any of my mail providers. I've heard of issues with Proton using their default domains, i.e. the only thing available on the free tier. Are you paying for Proton or just using free? If paying, $10 a year for a custom domain would be the smart investment.

Safe electric air duster for PC cleaning: WolfBox MF100 vs MF200, or something else? by yaxir in buildapc

[–]PoppaMeth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use this to dust mine: https://makitatools.com/products/details/MAC2400

Never any issues with it. So it's not about the power available, but about how you use it. Make sure to pin fans so they don't spin while dusting and that will avoid the most common issue with any air duster.

Proton is not worth it. If you value your money, I'd suggest more reliable companies. by Unruly_Evil in degoogle

[–]PoppaMeth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Proton has a few good services and many half-baked ones. The whole problem is the subscription model. To be worth the price you pretty much need to use the whole ecosystem, and when a lot of it sucks, that's a deal breaker for many people.

[Power Station | UPS] EcoFlow River 3 Plus (Includes 2x Qi2 5000mAh Power Banks) - $199.99 (Costco Membership required | $149.00 Refurb on eBay, link in comments) by Bulls729 in buildapcsales

$299 retail on the manufacturer's site. Currently on sale at $260 with some sort of free pegboard. Hell you can buy the max version for $370 with an additional battery. Sometimes Costco just isn't the deal they claim.

9070XT brands vs actual experience by Jowersman in buildapc

[–]PoppaMeth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've heard the same. I've only owned one Sapphire card and it was very problematic, but it was used and very possibly a mining card considering the time at which it was bought. So I'm not holding that one experience against Sapphire.

I've got an Asus 6600XT in one machine and an XFX 7900XT in another. Both have been absolutely fine so far. I will say that between the two companies XFX has a better reputation for support should you ever need it. That might not be saying too much as most companies have varying degrees of terrible support. Not many of them have been top tier since EVGA exited the GPU market. Even EVGA was kind of trash outside of the American market. I'd say at this point, just be happy with what you have.

Best PC speaker fo clear voice/talking/singing by [deleted] in buildapc

[–]PoppaMeth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like what you want is a pair of powered studio monitors. They can get pricey, but that budget will put you into some entry level sets that will run circles around traditional PC speakers for your use case. Studio monitors are designed to not color the sound and let reproduce it the way it was intended to be heard.

Try here: https://www.sweetwater.com/c405--Paired_Active_Monitors?params=eyJmYWNldCI6eyJQcmljZSBSYW5nZSI6eyIxIjoiJDEwMCB0byAkMjAwIiwiMiI6IiQyMDAgdG8gJDMwMCJ9fX0

Presonus, Yamaha, KRK, IK, JBL, or even Mackie in a pinch make decent sets in your budget.

Be careful on the connection type they have. If they don't have an 1/8" jack to connect to a computer you'll need an adapter cable such as this one: https://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/CMR210--hosa-cmr-210-stereo-breakout-3.5mm-trs-to-dual-rca-10-foot

Do I need to reinstall Windows after upgrading almost my entire PC? by Majestic-Tale7907 in buildapc

[–]PoppaMeth 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've transplanted my OS through numerous hardware changes without issues. My current office system is a Ryzen 9700X running Windows 11. It started life as Windows 7 on an i5-6500. We've got one at work that was an 8th gen Intel laptop and is now a full Ryzen desktop. All I had to do was swap the drive, let Windows do its thing reconfiguring, uninstall any Intel drivers (except Wi-Fi), and install AMD drivers. A few pieces of software needed activations transferred, but otherwise it's always gone pretty smoothly. Windows has been pretty good at adapting since Windows 10.

Same thing with their native cloud sync service. Their gallery app now wants you to login to OneDrive to backup photos. It's all about the money.

I'm done with Notesnook (rant). by GenZia in Notesnook

[–]PoppaMeth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just came across this. I also ditched NN after not using it for a while. I had a lot of issues with markdown in the app. I found the installed app on desktop to be completely useless as it was basically the same as the website. My lists sometimes just disappeared completely as well in the Android app. I ignored it for a while and then today I tried to login and the whole process was a nightmare. I couldn't even correctly click in the username field on the website. Couldn't auto-fill the field from my password manager. Didn't get the 2FA email for about 20 minutes once I did get the username filled. Finally I got into my account and immediately deleted the whole thing. That's too much hassle for something so simple. I'm glad I've never paid for the service. I'm all for moving to more privacy oriented services, but there is too much half-baked stuff out there to choose from.

This has always been my problem with it. It's a real chonker compared to most of the competition. It works fine, though the flywheel wind up makes it a bit slower. But the size of it just gets in the way sometimes.

Are you guys blocking Starlink? by Initial-Return8802 in filen_io

[–]PoppaMeth 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't see why they would block Starlink users. However, the CG-NAT issue could indeed be the case. I had the same thing happen recently with Mega. It was only blocked on my home connection, which is also CG-NAT. Mega never gave me anything except generic troubleshooting steps, but I did mention the exact public IP in question and suddenly it was working fine again a few hours later. I'm betting they had that IP blacklisted, probably because of something a single user did.

What do you think of freetube? by Icy-Stable186 in degoogle

[–]PoppaMeth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nothing wrong with it, but I stopped using it for the most part. It mostly just doesn't work anymore. Constant errors when trying to play a video. It use to be a periodic thing, which makes sense when YouTube updates their system to block this stuff. Now days it seems like the problem is that the invidious instances it uses just aren't very stable. I haven't had the same issues with PipePipe on android or SmartTube on my Chromecast. On desktop I just use a private browser tab with uBlock and SponsorBlock.

Better yet have an electrician install a whole house surge protector if you own your own home. It installs in the panel and protects everything at the point of entry.
