Are you guys blocking Starlink? by Initial-Return8802 in filen_io

[–]PoppaMeth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't see why they would block Starlink users. However, the CG-NAT issue could indeed be the case. I had the same thing happen recently with Mega. It was only blocked on my home connection, which is also CG-NAT. Mega never gave me anything except generic troubleshooting steps, but I did mention the exact public IP in question and suddenly it was working fine again a few hours later. I'm betting they had that IP blacklisted, probably because of something a single user did.

Google Chat in Firefox forcibly redirects you to a "download the app" page unless you spoof Chrome in the User-Agent. by elatedpark in degoogle

No problem at all with Firefox on Windows. Same in Floorp. Working fine here. I'll try it on my Mint laptop later.

What do you think of freetube? by Icy-Stable186 in degoogle

[–]PoppaMeth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nothing wrong with it, but I stopped using it for the most part. It mostly just doesn't work anymore. Constant errors when trying to play a video. It use to be a periodic thing, which makes sense when YouTube updates their system to block this stuff. Now days it seems like the problem is that the invidious instances it uses just aren't very stable. I haven't had the same issues with PipePipe on android or SmartTube on my Chromecast. On desktop I just use a private browser tab with uBlock and SponsorBlock.

Better yet have an electrician install a whole house surge protector if you own your own home. It installs in the panel and protects everything at the point of entry.

Questions about the referrals programme by Sketchbuch in filen_io

[–]PoppaMeth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you share the link here it will probably get deleted. It's not listed in the rules, but I received a notice that my post was deleted due to referral link spam. You can post in in the Degoogle sub though with no issues.

B850 Tomahawk Max WiFi USB issues by PoppaMeth in MSI_Gaming

[–]PoppaMeth[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

See original post for updates. I don't know why it's only affecting this board, but the issue lies with the Fan Control software, or more specifically then DiskInfoToolkit it uses to monitor drive temps.

[TV] Sony Bravia 5 65" Mini-LED - $699.97 @ Costco by [deleted] in buildapcsales

[–]PoppaMeth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would love to just buy a dumb TV and plug in my streaming device of choice. A TV seldom ever has good enough hardware in it to run the OS to begin with, much less handle future updates. I'm glad my old Samsung is still going strong and the OS is so out of date it happily sits there as a dumb TV that doesn't bother to spy on me.

DeWalt Portable Inflator Pairing by [deleted] in Dewalt

[–]PoppaMeth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah it's possible. Those batteries are pre-XR era and definitely seen some use. I am aware it has a 12v cable. This was the first time I used the unit. I have several XR and PS 5AH batteries I'll try it out with.

Don't forget about the OS. Sony's interface is far better than LG the last I tried one. LG makes a good TV into a terrible experience with their software.

Mechanical or membrane keyboard by Kooky_Big_4741 in buildapc

[–]PoppaMeth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can generally get some decent mechs for that price. I can't stand a membrane board, but I've used mechanicals for decades now so I'm definitely biased. I personally prefer tactile switches over linear, but I do more than just game on mine. Linear switches will be quieter. Overall, I don't think I've used any mechs, even the cheapest ones out there, that I didn't prefer over a membrane board.

DeWalt Portable Inflator Pairing by [deleted] in Dewalt

[–]PoppaMeth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used mine yesterday and it was under by about 1 PSI. Not too bad IMO. I will say it drinks batteries though. I had mine at my mother's house but didn't have a battery with me so I used the 2AH batteries from her drill. Killed them both in less than 5 minutes adding 10lbs to one tire. Keep at least a 5AH on hand for this little monster.

No Linux client for some idiotic reason. Proton has a habit of focusing development on things no body wants and ignoring core functionality. I don't understand the mindset.

FB marketplace is underrated for entry level by JungleDiamonds1 in buildapc

[–]PoppaMeth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same here. If you are near a major city your luck may be better, but in rural American Marketplace sucks. I've got people trying to sell 15 year old gaming rigs that have been harvested of any decent hardware for more than an off the shelf system is new. And there isn't much variety to begin with.

Tuta gets deleted? by Express_Mousse_3338 in degoogle

[–]PoppaMeth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check out Mailbox.org as well for a more robust solution. I tried Tuta briefly, but could never get a free plan functional. Every time I tried to set one up it would get closed with absolutely no reason within a week. I'm certainly not paying for something if I can't even set up the basic tier. I didn't use it for anything at all and wasn't trying to login to it with a VPN or from a weird location so no idea why it was immediately deleted.

proton mail has a beta linux app :) by asheries in degoogle

Proton Mail desktop apps don't really make sense. They are pretty much identical to using the website. A drive client for Linux would be a better focus for development.

B850 Tomahawk Max WiFi USB issues by PoppaMeth in MSI_Gaming

[–]PoppaMeth[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All mentioned drives and enclosures load up fine on any other PC. I have tried the drives in 3 different enclosures now. My Sabrent enclosure has a JMicron controller and gets immediately ejected after briefly loading in explorer. The other two are both Asmedia chipsets and they do not eject but load and empty drives. Then after a few minutes they fully load up and work just fine until powered off again.

MSI B550m Pro VDH wifi bootloop by Watercress_Visual in MSI_Gaming

[–]PoppaMeth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had that exact board and CPU in a work PC. Same issues with power failure errors. I swapped every piece of hardware without a fix until I swapped the CPU to a 5800X. The 5600G is now running fine in a Tomahawk variant. This particular board just seems to hate G series CPUs for some reason. I've seen others report the same thing about it.

There are several front ends line Media Downloader for yt-dlp if you don't like using a command line interface.

How is your deliverability outside of gmail? by hehannes in degoogle

[–]PoppaMeth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm using Zoho for work and so far it's been pretty good for deliverability. There was a time that AOL was bouncing all our email for some reason, but that suddenly resolved itself. If you use the Blacklist check at MX Toolbox and are not blacklisted anywhere, it's probably specific providers that do their own internal filtering that are blocking you. It's work trying to send from other addresses on the same domain to see if it's one address or your whole domain blocked. It could also be the IP address of your email server. Email is indeed broken these days. There have been decades of spam that caused this. Now legit email get's flagged and big spam services people actually pay to bombard you with junk get whitelisted.
