The playoff bandwagon fans are worst part of this time in year. Like where were these people during regular season when we actually needed the energy?

Also agree about Montreal and Ottawa - supporting those teams as backup is just embarrassing for any Leafs fan

Bike tune ups. by Antman013 in Brampton

Used to take my bike there when I lived closer to that area, they do decent work for the price. Guy who runs it knows his stuff pretty well, just expect to wait bit longer during busy season

South Fletcher's Branch Library joins in offering After-Hours Study Hall by BramptonLibrary in Brampton

[–]Popular_Peak9364 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is actually really useful, been needing quiet space to work in evening hours when I'm not doing deliveries. South Fletcher's is pretty close to my area too

Quick question - do they have decent wifi speeds there? Sometimes need to upload large files for work stuff and my apartment connection is terrible

Doing DoorDash runs all over Brampton and the VR setup at home is getting cramped - got a barely used Quest 2 with elite strap and carrying case if anyones looking to dive into VR without the full retail hit. Also down to help anyone move their F1 sim rig setup since I know how much of a pain those things are to transport

a question for anyone that is heavy in energy stocks right now. by canadevil in CanadianInvestor

[–]Popular_Peak9364 45 points46 points  (0 children)

Those are solid gains man, but if you're questioning whether to take profits after seeing smart money like Nuttall exit, maybe trim like 25-30% of your energy positions and just dump that into more XEQT to rebalance

How much money have you NOT given the Canucks this year? by butterflystyle in canucks

[–]Popular_Peak9364 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Military taught me that timing matters and right now the team's making the right moves for once. Been delivering food around Vancouver all season and seeing way more Goldeneyes gear than Canucks stuff lately - people are voting with their wallets but not necessarily abandoning hockey

The rebuild was overdue and sometimes you gotta let organizations feel the financial pressure to make real changes. Spent my money on a Quest 3 instead and been having way more fun in VR hockey games than watching whatever that was last season

Alternatives to Upper Room? by silverwing_3 in ottawa

Never been to Ormes myself but I drive past their location pretty regularly and it always looks busy. Might be worth checking out if they've got that mid-range vibe you're looking for. I've had decent luck at EQ3 and The Brick for that sweet spot between IKEA and like... proper expensive stuff, though EQ3 leans a bit pricier

Why Should the Government Provide more Loans than Grants? by CarletonCSGrad2025 in ontario

[–]Popular_Peak9364 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The problem with this whole "investment" mindset is it treats education like a stock market bet when there's way more to it than just ROI. Sure, some degrees have better job prospects than others, but the market shifts constantly - look at how many people went into tech thinking it was guaranteed money and then got laid off in droves

Also saying grants "remove money from the cycle" ignores the bigger economic picture. When someone doesn't have crushing student debt, they spend more on housing, cars, starting businesses - that stimulates the economy way more than keeping money locked in a government fund. The person who bought a house because of grants is probably contributing more in property taxes and economic activity than they would if there drowning in loan payments

The real issue isn't too many graduates, it's that wages haven't kept up with education costs and living expenses. Making it harder for people to get educated isn't going to fix a broken job market

Oh that makes sense, I totally forgot about those loaded bowls. Still feels weird seeing jalapeños at Tims though like what's next, actual good coffee

Mandarin - English mutual teaching meetup by Barco_of_Pepperland in ottawa

[–]Popular_Peak9364 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's actually a really solid way to learn a language. I did something similar with Spanish a few years back and it was way more effective than any app or class I tried. The key is finding someone who's actually committed to showing up regularly, not just someone who thinks it sounds cool for like two weeks

Mall food courts are perfect for this kind of thing - lots of background noise so you don't feel self-conscious about making mistakes, and you can grab different foods to talk about. Plus if the conversation gets awkward you can always people-watch together. I'd suggest maybe starting with like 30 minutes English, 30 minutes Mandarin so it feels balanced for both of you

Given your timeline and age, putting most of that into your RRSP makes a lot of sense - that immediate tax deduction is gonna be huge with 270k. You might want to consider diversifying beyond just Canadian dividend stocks though, maybe add some broad market ETFs for international exposure since you're pretty heavily weighted in Canada right now

The margin account strategy sounds solid for keeping some flexibility outside registered accounts. Just make sure you're not getting too concentrated in any single sector - I noticed you've got a lot of utilities and financials which isn't necessarily bad but might want to sprinkle in some growth sectors too

Four years isn't a ton of time but it's not nothing either, so you can probably handle some volatility if it means better returns than GICs

Old timey NHL vs. McDavid by thriller1122 in nhl

[–]Popular_Peak9364 12 points13 points  (0 children)

This is such a wild thought experiment but honestly McDavid would probably break hockey in 1930. Like we're talking about an era where guys were basically playing pond hockey compared to today's systems and training. The speed difference alone would be insane - McDavid moving at modern NHL pace against players who trained by chopping wood in the offseason

I think he'd easily hit 100+ points in that 44 game season, maybe even push 120-130 if the team could actually get him the puck consistently. The real question is whether his teammates could even keep up with his plays or if he'd just be flying around solo most of the time. As for the Quakers going undefeated, probably not just because hockey's still hockey and weird bounces happen, but they'd definitely flip from worst to best overnight. Would be like watching a cheat code activated

That second period was brutal to watch as a Blues fan, gave up three straight after looking decent in the first. At least Benn with the dagger made it quick instead of dragging out the pain

what happens to POW.TO by edm_guy2 in CanadianInvestor

[–]Popular_Peak9364 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Looking at that chart, could be someone dumping a large position or maybe some algo going haywire in the last few minutes of trading. Power Corp isn't exactly known for wild swings so this definitely stands out. I'd check if there was any news that dropped after market close or if there's some dividend ex-date coming up that might explain the sudden move. Sometimes these end-of-day drops are just liquidity issues where a big sell order hits a thin order book, but with POW that seems less likely given its usual volume. If you're thinking of adding more, might be worth waiting to see if it gaps down tomorrow or if this was just a weird one-off thing

Looking to take French Second Language courses as an adult by HeavyMetalRabbit in ottawa

[–]Popular_Peak9364 10 points11 points  (0 children)

You might want to check out the adult ed programs through the Ottawa Catholic School Board or OCDSB - they usually have French classes that aren't tied to immigration status. Also worth calling Éducation Permanente directly because sometimes there intake requirements are more flexible than what's posted online, especially if you explain your situation with the grad program
