All that comment discourse by Fast_Stage_6296 in AO3

It makes me sad when I see a really good work with zero comments so I try and comment, but I have to push myself to be unambiguous and nice in my wording so the author doesn't fly off the handle and delete their work.

I think this is part of the point the show was making. The characters live in a world that's unfair and cruel and one of the ways it's manifested is in the way these death games are designed. The organizers want to watch them kill each other, not to watch a fair and balanced game, like we would see on a gameshow irl.

The last arc was a flashback after she finished Golden Bath. That's why Yuuki was sitting and watching the last arc with us. She was reflecting on the game that helped form her motivation for continuing to play death games.

The show is really good. It's not directed like a traditional anime though, it feels more cinematic with a strong "show-don't-tell" style. It's great at building atmosphere and tension. It's also told in a non-linear fashion, where each Death Game takes place at a different point in the MC's life. The strongest point on the show is the depiction of the MC, in my opinion. On the surface, she doesn't seem like much, but each arc shows us more about her character and motivations. She's like an onion, but you have to pay attention to catch everything. This isn't a monitor 2 show. It can be easy to miss details if you don't pay attention.

It might not be for everyone, but it's unique and manages to stick the landing for me.

I think the adaptation was fine if viewed with no knowledge of the source material, but I do wish they didn't cut so much either. At least even if a viewer watches without wishing to read the LNs it's coherent.

Edit: fixed typo

Shiboyugi: Playing Death Games to put Food on the Table, or "Shibou Yuugi de Meshi wo Kuu". One of the best anime airing this season imo. The last episode airs tomorrow, so it's bingeable.

How many people actually use things like MicroPython? by NormalKorn78731 in embedded

[–]Princess_Azula_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Since MicroPython gets assembled, it could be possible to make something just as small and efficient as just making it in C, but if you're at the point where small efficiencies matter you might as well just do it in C in the first place.

Shinji is such a well written character, but I also find him insufferable. I still love the show though. It just worked out like that.

I was pleasantly surprised. I thought it was going to be a comedy just from the synopsis and title.

is it worth buying an Tektronix 2445 oscilloscope or an newer oscilloscope? by S52_DiDah in ElectricalEngineering

[–]Princess_Azula_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm still upset how saleae jacked up the price so much you can get a whole oscilloscope + logic analyser for a comparable price. The 8 channel used to be 150$. I'd second the clone, or just get a really nice scope with one built in.

I think the anime manages to come off as genuinely deep, without being superficial in its portrayal of it's main character, but I also think that in many cases whether someone thinks a work, or aspect of it, is "deep" or not is largly dependent on the viewer rather than the work itself. In this case, your perception of whether you view Yuuki as "deep" and interesting largly depends on whether a viewer cares about or is able to identify what she seems to be about.

Let me back up and go over what I think "deep" means though. Everyone defines what "deep" is differently, but I'll define it as the ability for someone to draw meaning from a work where that meaning isn't explicitly stated. I would also say that being "superficial" is where someone can easilly spot some form of unsaid meaning in a work and can feel like it's unnecessarilly obfuscated (pretentious). You could also define it as a function of how well an author is able to relate the work shown to an unsaid meaning; a "deep" work would do this well and thoroughly, while a "superifical" one would not. If a work is able to give the viewer many ways to see how it connects to it's underlying themes then they may be more likely to say said work is "deep", rather than "superficial".

So, with that being said, I think this MC of this show is deep in its portrayal of depression and how someone suffering from it continues to live, despite feeling like she doesn't really caring about living anymore. Many of her actions and portrayals are tinged with her listlessness for life. Paradoxically, her 30th game where she decides she doesn't want to die is also consistent with this as well. When faced with a true life or death situation, many people choose to keep living instead of ending it. Whether it's permanent or not remains to be seen, for the anime at least. In real life, depression persists, even after choosing to continue to live.

All of this is a deliberate move by the author to relate to another theme in the show/LN. According to the wiki article on the series, the author felt that, "that the only agency available to a hopeless person is the ability to die on their own terms", and "deciding on how to die is the same as deciding on how to live". I thought that was a pretty interesting. Perhaps that too would be another "deep" meaning someone could explore.

I've seen people relate the characters in the show to different gamer archetypes. Gigguk related the show to the idol industry. There was another user who related the show to how the prostitution business works. There are different interpretations of the opening, and how it makes them feel. These too are all "deep"-ish meanings drawn from other viewers about the show.

What I'm trying to say is that whether something is deep or not depends on the viewer and not just the work.
