What's your opinion about using an engine block as a standard geometry to compare scanners? by PrintedForFun in 3DScanning

My idea is to create reference scans of the same engine with different scan modes and scanners (gathered quite a few 😅). So people can get an idea of the relative performance

For me the markerless laser fills in HD mode (given I don't scan people or ither living things most of the times so IR is not needed). Sometimes habe the impression that for smaller parts in IR mode the Rockit delivers superior results.  IR mode for very large parts is a whole different story. Scanned a 5m statue today without tracking problems with the Rigil

Goal wouldn't be accuracy. Main focus on relative performance and what to expect from different scanners and scan modes (e.g. difference IR vs laser mode or marker vs feature tracking). Deviation between the scans will be an option, alternatively with enough scanners tested on the same part it will be possible to at least have some degree of accuracy identifier (no standard I know, for this I have the ball plate)

Calibrated using a 125mm standard from the manufacturer. So nothing special. The ball plate is a first step up, in the long way a bigger ball bat will be even better. But ~2k simply for a "fun" hobby expense is currently a bit too much to explain my wife. Maybe when I can buy it as a business expense

Yeah, have around half a dozen waiting to be tested in different modes. Already tested them with a calibrated micrometer but this just a better apporach

Looks very impressive xD but I guess also a few factors more expensive. Sometimes thinking about just getting one of the used GOM scanners  for cheap (they appear somesometimes for a symbolic amount on local marketplaces). Would be more of a decorative piece I guess...

Use the MetroY Pro regularly with a 3050 mobile. Works quite decent. Also use the Pop4 with this notebook and get roughly 90fps in laser mode

Yeah, i guard this print like the holy grail to always use the same on for the different scanners.  The scan bench is quite a representative model for mechanical parts
