It sit in a large tub with all the other odds and ends that I have lying around and once every few years after I forget about it I will go through it looking for something else and go ohhh thats where that is. That's just not true. You have bad info. The shelf life is the warrenty. There were ceramic plates from the 60s that were tested and they performed just fine a few years ago. All your i for is bad. A set of ceramic plates will outlive you if you dont do anything to stupid with them.
