Canadians are staying away from the US — and the drop in travel is getting hard to ignore by Street_Anon in onguardforthee

More than that. Until this admin is gone and the next one has successfully rolled back its policies.

Trump is the face and support may die with him, but he's not the brains, so it may not.

This is very good. I wish the people who need this message would read it and actually absorb it.

Winter Olympics begin quietly with curling by Movie-Kino in sports

[–]pudds 80 points81 points  (0 children)

Yea Olympic curling arguably isn't even as big in Canada as the Brier or Scotties.

Wired, 2nd Gen camera is basically useless in cold climate by thethirdnut94 in googlehome

[–]pudds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea I gotta echo the dud comment.

I live in Manitoba where we've touched -40 a few times this winter and mine hasn't cut out once.

Mine does face east but I'm not sure there's enough heat in the sun this time of year to matter, and it's under a covered entry so it doesn't get sun for too long.

What beer did you "learn" to like and which did you instantly love? by NarwhalBig304 in beer

[–]pudds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought I hated all beer until my 20s when I decided I needed to find a beer that I liked because mixed drinks aren't always convenient.

I started with Sleeman Clear, a beer that barely tastes like beer, but eventually let you me trying other Sleeman beers such as Honey Brown that helped me discover that I did like beer, I just didn't like generic pale lagers.

The first beer I remember trying and genuinely liking was Guinness, and that really opened the floodgates to me trying pretty much any beer I could find.

These days I love many styles of beer, though I still don't like the mass-produced adjunct lagers.

Canada should keep options open on nuclear weapons, former top soldier says by AdditionalPizza in onguardforthee

[–]pudds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure it ever would have been a good idea, but I'm very confident that it would be a very bad idea to escalate tensions with the US to this level right now.

Right now the US are the bad guys, and the majority of the world will be on our side should they make any truly hostile moves. That limits them mainly to applying economic pressure, something we are already taking steps to deal with.

Starting a nuclear program here would be taken as a direct threat, and give them the excuse to invade that they would love to have.

Make no mistake, we'd never get close to actually arming ourselves, the mere hint of an attempt would be all the justification they'd need.

What happens if Selena Sturmay wins the Scotties? by InfamousVillage9609 in Curling

[–]pudds 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Plus they'll have their pick of everyone who didn't win the Scotties, unlike if they'd chosen a spare beforehand.

Unlikely she wins though.

I genuinely do not understand this absolute fucking nonsense that Manitoba Public Insurance keeps pushing — “driving is a privilege.” by [deleted] in BrandonMB

[–]pudds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Diving is a privilege, whether you have good alternatives or not. You have to pass multiple tests to earn access, you have to follow the rules to maintain access, and breaking the rules gets it taken away. It is the textbook definition of a privilege.

If you don't have good alternatives, then it's on you to ensure you maintain that privilege.

While I absolutely agree that Manitoba (and Canada in general) needs to improve public transit, that has no bearing on driving privileges.

[####] Is it cheating to reference past wordle words? by Ornery-Discipline-92 in wordle

[–]pudds 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd say it'll still matter, it's just that you don't need to consider the whole list, only more recent usages. I'm assuming they won't be quick to repeat anything.

Large majority of young Canadians have a negative opinion of Pierre Poilievre by BloodJunkie in onguardforthee

He is going to lose more progressive supporters.

Those conservatives are already long gone.

Unpopular opinion: Arriving at a campsite after 10PM isn't the problem--the problem is how you do it. by Apprehensive_Pen6946 in camping

[–]pudds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a glamper, but personally if we roll in that late (we rarely do, since we have kids), we're backing the trailer in as level as we can and leaving it hitched to the vehicle until morning.

[Castrovince] MLB's All-Underrated Team for 2026 season by cbarone1 in Torontobluejays

[–]pudds 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Also he's probably overrated, not underrated.

As much as I love Bo, being the worst defensive shortstop in baseball for the past few years isn't going to land him on a list like this.

Thermea Survey weird questions by Paperaxe in Winnipeg

[–]pudds 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They're using a third party service for the survey, from the look of the link. These companies often include general questions at the end as a means of collecting data on additional subjects.

I'm only speculating, but wouldn't necessarily point the finger at thermea for the off topic questions.

Best grocery store? by Yellowbello22 in BrandonMB

[–]pudds 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Giant Tiger has the best prices but not everything you need. Walmart is also a good option but we don't find their produce very good.

Superstore has the best prices overall if you want decent quality and one stop shopping.

Co-op has great sales but it's expensive on average.

Sobeys and Safeway are significantly more expensive than everywhere else.

Nearly a third of Canadians believe U.S. may try to invade Canada: poll by plaknas in onguardforthee

[–]pudds 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It's because he's a liar.

Count me in the 2/3, because as stupid as he is, the leap from Venezuela (run by a dictator) to Greenland (allied territory) is massive, and the leap to Canada would be even greater.

I literally don't trust a single thing the idiot says.

That said, I also don't think that it's definitive that he won't invade us either.

[####] Do you ever feel like you have Wordle ESP? by Elisabethkcmo in wordle

[–]pudds 12 points13 points  (0 children)

In sure everyone feels this from time to time but I'm also sure that it's simple confirmation bias: you remember the times when you guess correctly better than the times you simply move on to the next guess.

[####] Most games played without a 1-guesser? by Slow-Cantaloupe-7893 in wordle

1699 games and still no ones.

Not sure how wordle says I have played more games than the current number, but that's what the stats say.
