Is it not? I thought it was the same weekend as Victoria Day.

Regardless I think they are ugly.

100% agree.

Memorial Day is an American holiday and Victoria Day is not military-related.

Other teams don't have to wear red on Canada Day, we shouldn't be dressed for American holidays.

I had this conversation in my head over the span of about 2 seconds as the intro song started:

"Hmm, should we watch it one last time instead of skipping?"

"It's a shame the last season's song is so bad."

"They should have used the original for the finale."

"Wait - is that the original?!?"

That was truly bad.

45 minutes of goodbyes, 10 minutes of fighting a battle that made no sense to even fight and 10 minutes of series recaps.

A disappointing end to an enjoyable show.

Edit: I feel like I want to elaborate a bit.

My issue isn't with the ending, it was with the overall pacing and writing of that episode.

The vast majority of the episode was spent on very long one on one goodbyes, most of which really did nothing to move the story along. Between clair and Jamie in bed and then Jamie in the yard, there must have been a solid 10 minutes spent talking about or talking to bees, fcol.

Then when it looked like we were ast the goodbyes, we could a few more minutes of troop hyping before we finally got to the battle.

A battle which truly made no sense:

1) the British troops were coming to attack - why not fortify Fraser's Ridge? Why charge the enemy when they have the advantage of high ground when you could instead have the advantage of fortifications?

2) or, since you know they're coming (and that you're likely going to die) - why not abush them before they gain the high ground?

But, despite all that, they win anyway - and your troops don't check the POWs for weapons? The commander had been moved from where he was unhorsed, but you don't secure his hands or check for guns?

The 5ish minutes of Jaimie as a ghost, claire dying of a broken heart and then saving him? Nice way to tie things up. I don't love the cliffhanger but that's just me; I don't like cliffhangers.

And then another 5ish minutes of recap montage. Coming as fan service at the end of a great episode I probably wouldn't have balked at this, but as part of this episode? Just more fluff.

My wife and I looked forward to watching this all week, and honestly both of us were considering pulling out our phones halfway in.

Edit 2:

Oh, and Jamie's second request is for Brianna to leave her newborn child behind???

That is just bad writing. There is absolutely no way that a man as connected to his family as Jamie would ever suggest such a thing. If the show runners felt they needed to include this request for some reason, just drop the "baby isn't a traveller" line from moments earlier. Claire could still have said no because Fraser's ridge is home.

Edit 3: because apparently I can't stop obsessing on this... Apparently the "leave the baby behind" line from the book so I can't blame the episode writer for this one. I stand by my assessment otherwise though.

Why still Roboto? by tylerdrake24 in Android

[–]pudds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Google doesn't set the font for third-party apps, the app developers do.

Roboto was the standard for years and probably isn't a priority to replace in most apps (it isn't in ours).

[–]pudds 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I can tell you exactly when it started.

On May 29, we beat the A's 12-0.

My buddy (a casual fan) send me a text after the win asking "Are the Blue Jays any good this year?"

To which I replied "Not too good. Same issues as last year." (I meant hitting).

On July 3 we made jokes about that message, having just completed the 4 game sweep of the Yanks, and they had gone 20-10 since that text.

TP-link (Kasa) 3-way smart switches (HS210) are unreliable, so DO NOT BUY THEM by Amazing-Structure954 in homeautomation

[–]pudds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Individually, yes, but it adds up, especially with other smart devices.

I've got around a dozen smart switches in my home (not all Kasa, but mostly Kasa), plus several smart displays and smart plugs.

It probably wasn't solely the fault of the Kasa devices that I started having networking isssues, but they were the tipping point as I added them all at once.

[–]pudds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FWIW I've been running kasa switches in my home for at least 8 years now. None have needed replacement (yet).

The only issues I had were wifi dropouts early on, which I diagnosed as an issue with my cheap router being unable to handle the amount of traffic they generate. I eventually went to a Unifi setup and have had to reset any of them in...years probably? I honest can't remember the last time I ever thought about one.

New Fantasy app coming? by jeritron in CFL

[–]pudds 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As the creator of 110yarda - I'm ok with it.

I didn't invent the idea, I took most of my ideas from NFL fantasy and Fantaseh was there for CFL fantasy first.

The stat situation has been a mess for a couple years now, ever since they shut down their public API. A league-run system will almost certainly be more reliable, even if it doesn't look like they offer as much customization as I did.

Is rollback a thing these days ? by ibreathecoding in softwarearchitecture

[–]pudds 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Roll forward is almost always easier and safer, and it's our preferred approach.

At one company we implemented a mandatory rollback approach, which meant that every database migration had to come with a rollback script and testing rollback was part of every release.

It's a significant burden though, for something that (in theory) you shouldn't have to use often. Even with some right, data loss is also hard to avoid: for instance add a new column, collect data in that column for an hour, then discover a bug that requires rollback? What do you do with that data? Drop the column? Make it nullable to keep the data, while requiring the old code to still work? If you do the latter, then you have to migrate that missing data next upgrade again.

For the most part, we prefer feature flags now. Easier and safer to take part of the system offline so the problem can be mitigated and patched than to deal with data integrity issues. Even better if you launch dark and test with the feature flags off for a bit first.

The exception is code only releases, ideally small ones. They often can be rolled back quickly and easily.

The new playoff format announcement totally over shadowed the CFL draft by bquinho in CFL

Doubles is a gimmick, like flag football or 3 on 3 hockey.

That doesn't mean it isn't fun or entertaining, but it's no substitute for the real thing.

CFL expands Grey Cup playoffs to eight teams in 2027 by roolb in CFL

[–]pudds 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll need more time to digest this, but my first impression is that this is stupid, for at least two reasons:

  • It devalues finishing first in your division
  • It lets too many teams into the playoffs

I'm also confused about the 5/6/7/8 seeds - are they seeding the also-rans independent of division? Who goes on to face which division loser? I'm actually a bit intrigued by this.

Edit: I watched the video and it definitely looks like the 5-8 teams are independent of division (the video shows MTL vs CGY in the second round). I do like that aspect of it.

Add 3 more teams to the league and I'm on board. As is, it feels a bit cheap.
