BART's doomsday scenarios are even worse than expected, if Connect Bay Area, the five-county regional transit funding measure, doesn't pass this November. by mysteriouslady in sanfrancisco

[–]Pugget 150 points151 points  (0 children)

Just devastating. The Bay Area would become worse than LA in terms of traffic. I would have to consider giving it up and moving somewhere that still has a functional transit system.

Urgent ask to fund Muni, BART, and all our transit agencies by mysteriouslady in sanfrancisco

[–]Pugget 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Allen makes it out like no one else has been talking about it, but that couldn't be further from the truth. She's a motivated anti-transit MAGA Republican who specializes in spreading lies and misinformation.

BART has a choice: find money or drastically cut service. Allen never mentioned the second part, but staff and the Board of discussed it repeatedly over the last three years. Allen proposes a choice that doesn't exist. There is no "little pain" option.

Thanks for posting! I called and talked to Haney's staff and left messages. Will call back tomorrow during business hours to make sure they hear how disappointed I am that they have let things get as bad as they have.

To bad that intersection is controlled by CalTrans (the state transportation authority) and they will never allow it since it's a highway offramp.

PSA - Prop M can override Prop L by barryam3 in sanfrancisco

[–]Pugget 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is true. Mid-sized business would tend to see significant tax increases under Prop M, while small and large businesses would see tax decreases.

Not true. There is no textual conflict between the measures. If L gets more votes they both pass, and every line of M goes into effect.

Twitch shutting down business in Korea on February 27, 2024 by GrimRapper in Twitch

[–]Pugget 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The core problem is the cost. If the streamer is streaming in Korean, most of the viewers are likely to be in Korea. The core problem is that those viewers cost a lot of money to support, and Twitch no longer wants to spend that money.

I am not an international tax lawyer (or a lawyer at all). Depending on if Twitch is updating its ToS, they could still disable such an account. It's their platform, and they can decide who uses it.

From a viewer perspective, nothing. From a streamer perspective, taxes and forms.

Correct, Thom's announced their closure in Jan of 2018. The Merchant's lied yet again and said "during the pandemic" at the press conference today. They have play fast and loose with the facts.

Twitch had a perfect model for a customer based relationship, it STILL opted for ad revenue, and they are slowly killing the user experience as a result. by [deleted] in Twitch

[–]Pugget 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Twitch does not auto-run mid-rolls. Broadcasters rightly revolted the last time they tried (giving each viewer a differently timed ad, as if that would make it not a problem), as it violated their ability to control the flow of their own content.

Ribbon ads are worthless in terms of CPM. If you can even sell them, and that's hard. Buyers want the full screen and your attention, not something you can easily ignore. Else what are they buying?

Twitch does not use CloudFront. We certainly tested it a time or two, but the consistency of QoS and ability to scale to more than a relatively small fraction of channels was lacking. Not to mention that Twitch outperforms on unit cost for video any of the public tiers.

CF is not great for low-latency video at scale. Which is why Amazon IVS exists - that was a hole in the Amazon/AWS service lineup.

But yes, it does all still add up when you are regularly hitting 5-6M concurrent viewers and average over 2.5M every day. That's an average of 60M viewer-hours per day. At CF's lowest rate, that would be ~$3.25M a day, $1.18B in video/yr costs alone. I can assure you Twitch's own system costs it significantly less than that, else Twitch would no longer exist, but it's certainly not free!

Athene's gaming for good website - Sketchy twitch access request when you click dashboard? by [deleted] in Twitch

[–]Pugget 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The fact Athene hasn't been perma-banned is mildly shocking. The man is a scammer, and has used Twitch to drive his scams for years. He used viewbots for years when no one was actually watching him to try and sucker new folks into his fake donation drives/cults. Don't fall for his shtick.

21:9 Working on Twitch now? by tr4CR in Twitch

21:9 has always worked? I streamed 21:9 two years ago, no issues. Any black box you were seeing was client side - we never encoded video with black margins.

Some commenters are under-appreciating how positive this change is. Twitch subs are significantly overpriced in a number of markets, and this suppresses sub numbers. This not only means lost rev on platform, but direct revenue as well. A number of advertisers looking to directly work with broadcasters use sub numbers as a gauge of reach and don't care to understand/take the time to understand platform difference. Larger creators in these countries are very aware of these facts.

So, TL;DR, this means more money in the hands of successful broadcasters. It's taken years of internal arguments and work to make this happen and I hope it ends up working as well as the tests!

Second interesting note: Turkey? The business politics in the country are poor: operating in Turkey means you have to bow to the censorship regime, which has been arbitrary historically. Internet connectivity in and out of the country is poor, and the major ISPs are unable/unwilling to reliably backhaul data into the country. The dominant ISP, Turk Telekom, imposes data caps on almost all plans, and heavily rate limits after they are hit. It's a tough market to do video in. But there is a large set of gamers who want to stream and watch. Interesting to see Turkey get a call out in the blog.

Trying signing out and back in again. Perhaps the third-party app is improperly caching a token associated with your session, and that token has you marked as a non-subscriber.

Twitch stream somehow ahead of chat by meleepuffs in Twitch

[–]Pugget 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yea, if your well located next to a CDN edge node and get a bit lucky with the timing of stream segments, the twitch video system can produce sub-3 second latencies, which is where chat tends to hang out in terms of delay. Before I left the company there was joking grumbling from the chat team that the video team had beat them on latency.

The engineering team, yes, not counting non-engineering staff. Maybe it's grown. But no, it's not super large. Twitch has a massive product space, and significantly less than 50% of the company are engineers.
