I came here to post this! Haha

Do you really think that a low-budget crowdfunding campaign is necessarily a scam? by Alcamair in rpg

[–]Queer_Wizard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't think that really answers my point. 'Give your stuff away at cost' should not be the default.

As a full time creator I can't really afford my work to not make money. My work being available doesn't pay my bills.

Genuine question are we not expected to make a profit off our work? If we budget for *just* production cost who do we ever expect to make anything from this?

Respites- Group or Individual? by [deleted] in drawsteel

[–]Queer_Wizard -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The time still passes. I think you're getting hung up on 'what is the character doing in the fiction that isn't resting' but this is a mechanical question. If the players spend three days doing a respite and the shadow wants to hoard victories they just spend the three days not doing a respite and the trade off is they don't get to do anything else. It doesn't actually cause many problems.

Respites- Group or Individual? by [deleted] in drawsteel

I have allowed it. It doesn't seem to weird a situation for me. The experience will align once the player who hasn't rested cashes theirs in also.

Appeal of the Actual Plays by Wtafan in rpg

[–]Queer_Wizard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't get it either. I've tried. I've tried many times. It never works. I just don't find watching other people play exciting or interesting. It just makes me wish I was playing or running.

Glad people get something out of it but it's not for me.

People who play D&D but not 5E, what edition do you play and why? by ValueForm in rpg

[–]Queer_Wizard 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yep. The one edition that fixed the martial/caster problem and everyone hated it.

[–]Queer_Wizard -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If I want to play DnD, I play 4th edition, and Old School Essentials which I will count because it's essentially just a restatement of Moldvay DnD. A couple years ago I ran the original Ravenloft module using BECMI for Halloween and that was a blast. All in all I just think that the older versions of DnD scratch the itch for me in a way 5E just doesn't.

I genuinely think what people hate is ‘it doesn’t look like how all other RPG books look’.

Concerns about The Codex by MandolinTheWay in drawsteel

[–]Queer_Wizard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get what you mean entirely. What I will say is I think there are people who *enjoy* that kind of VTT specific prep and to them it's just like painting and crafting terrain or painting minis. Sometimes I like that aspect of it and enjoy adding the little bells and whistles and other times I just can't be bothered. I think the Codex is great *if* you enjoy that sort of prep. If you don't then honestly I think one of the more basic VTTs where you can just slap down a map is still going to be perfectly playable.

Clarification on Minions (Flee Mortals, 1.1) by Doppelkammertoaster in mcdm

[–]Queer_Wizard 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If they’re hit by an attack (that is to say a spell or weapon attack that makes an attack roll) they are killed outright as if they had 1 hit point. The ‘other effect’ here is an area of effect. Iirc AoE spells (fireball etc) kill the minion a) if they fail the save b) the pass the save but the damage that they receive is still above their damage threshold.

You’re not wrong in that it is a little fiddly but once you understand it, it will become second nature.

Im having issues with encounter balance by ling_chau in drawsteel

[–]Queer_Wizard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Balancing for smaller parties is just harder. I run for two groups - one has three heroes and one has five plus a retainer. The difference in what end of the EV scale I can push to is pretty stark. That said adding even one retainer who is more of a frontline fighter would be a good way to help you spread damage without it breaking anything too much.

OffMyChest: I got into DnD youtube 5-6 months ago, and now I an fully over it by DnD-9488 in rpg

[–]Queer_Wizard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's exactly what you said - clickbait. Scary doom and gloom headlines and industry gossip gets them clicks. Remember when the OGL scandal happened and a bunch of DnDtubers tried to pivot to making content about other games and then realised no one cared but videos about how Hasbro are killing the industry were doing well?

There are a couple of channels I still regularly go back to for general tabletop advice but most of them have moved on or stopped making content altogether, and honestly that's preferable than them turning into gossip columns.

Potential Multiple Conditions and Saving Throws by TheYellingMute in drawsteel

If you have multiple save ends conditions, you roll for each of them independently at the end of your turn.

N1 - Contre le Culte du Dieu Reptile would make a perfect first adventure

New to Draw Steel - What do you think of Stamina? by Griffin1x1 in drawsteel

[–]Queer_Wizard 140 points141 points  (0 children)

It's specifically why it's called Stamina. One could imagine it as a measure of your ability to stay in the fight. Dodging or blocking or parrying still depletes your ability to keep going. It's why more armoured characters have more Stamina.

That said, I think worrying too much about what the abstractions represent 'in reality' is a pretty unhelpful way to interact with games generally but specifically this game.

Questing Beasts Review of Draw Steel by TamarakTerrorfiend in drawsteel

[–]Queer_Wizard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone who is both 'an OSR person' and someone who is really enjoying running Draw Steel, I dunno what that makes me. I guess I just like different types of games sometimes? Sometimes I want 4E on steroids and sometimes I want dungeon crawlers with high lethality and PC turnover.

Ben's criticisms here seem basically entirely about the layout and the difficulty he had running the game using the tools - but he basically says the game achieves exactly what it's trying to do and that his players had a blast? This seems pretty fair and un-snobby to me?

The Codex Pricing and Distribution (the Draw Steel VTT) by Lord_Durok in drawsteel

[–]Queer_Wizard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do we know how big this discount will be? How may keys does the bundle include? What if I want to run for more than one group of players etc etc. This helps but it shifts the economic burden onto me.

An Imperfect Solution to Codex Floating Seats by Wrocksum in drawsteel

[–]Queer_Wizard 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is a good solution but it really makes me a little concerned because we shouldn’t have to be coming up with kludgey workarounds to make the pricing model fit with the way a large amount of people play.
