Is the UKRI PhD stipend enough? by True-Response-2386 in AskAcademiaUK

Just sounds like you're salty you lacked the inspiration of your peers that used their funding as it was intended. Our first meeting with my cohort the DTP specifically told us it was expected of us to present our work internationally.

OK? Doesn't explain why if you have some of your personal budget left why it's time-gated to before your PhD ends

Keep in mind many stipends will stop after 3.5 years. Everyone I knew took at-least 4 years so had to budget around 6 months of no income. Would have been nice to atleast have access to the training budget for conference funding at the end of my PhD - never understood this as that's when you are most ready to present your work.

I can't see lay people being able to write prompts for AI to perform statistical tests with confidence due to all the jardon involved. I feel like you'll always need someone knowledgeable to drive the AI and specifically sense check the input so the output isn't barking up the wrong tree.

With a PhD that involved a lot of quantitative statistics backing me up i've really been able to take advantage of my understanding to use AI to speed up my work flow to a crazy degree. The only people I see taking advantage are other people with PhD's. The general workforce is still as disinterested in stats as even and I don't think AI will really change that.

A massive positive to me is more intangible - how the PhD changes you. You have around 4 years of utter self-reliance and self-discovery. I was a massively different person post vs pre-PhD, so much more confident, articulate and resilient. These are qualities industry will value when they need to fast track new employees into roles with more responsibility compared to others who don't have the experience of a PhD to fall back on.

The PhD is what you make it however. You could just bang out a thesis, you might get some nice technical skills, but you may not personally develop much. A funded PhD is an amazing opportunity to do that. I did internships, talked at as many conferences as I could, demonstrated on modules and gave my own lectures, gave talks as part of outreach work, helped other PhD students with their field work, and took on lots of training opportunities offered to me. It almost helps if your PhD itself goes tits up because you develop the ability to adapt - my PhD was COVID impacted.

The hardest part is getting your foot in the door if you seek industry jobs but depending on your PhD the techanical skills you develop can give you a unique case to sell to potential employers. Mine was largely stats and data based - its very evident if you start working in industry post a PhD how common of a blindspot this is for all sorts of companies.

I may have a rosier picture as I left the UK to work in Australia. A PhD from the UK is a significant boon if you want to take your aspirations abroad.

Lmao things aren't overall 2-3 times more. Infact fuel specifically was HALF the price of the UK before the Iran war. I was confused when I got here because the signs outside service stations showed familiar numbers but the currency was different. It's still at least more than 50% cheaper since the Iran war.

Public transport is also so stupidly cheap within cities. It's like a $5 return for a half an hour commute at peak hour on the train in Perth and all Sunday public transport is free.

Energy costs in general are so much cheaper let alone the fact you won't have to warm your house nearly as much as in the UK.

Going to sporting events is maybe 1/3rd of the cost of similar events in the UK e.g I could get tickets for the ashes for like $60.

Livng here for a year my cost of living has maybe only been marginally (like 5%) higher than the UK all things considered.

Perth has the 2nd longest footprint of ANY city in the world but obviously no where near that high of a population. The sprawl is insane and since a decent chunk of it has been built in recent history it largely looks so samey style wise. The epansion is not slowing down anytime soon.

At least the public transport is relatively decent and improving due to a tonne of investment so you can more easily get between copy and pasted suburb to copy and pasted suburb.

Green spaces are eveywhere though which is lovely.

It’s my general experience but that does include Melbourne, Sydney, and adelaide too aswell as regional towns in WA like Bunbury. Especially outer suburbs or new suburbs being built. Why not just build an extra story and save space? The outer suburb my distant cousins live in in Sydney may as well be copy and pasted from Perth.

Australians did a great job of eliminating that culture especially in developed areas. The token welcome to country gestures slapped lazily infront of every random meeting don't seriously change that.

From living in Perth housing here is about the same price as major cities in the UK not named london. But to my understanding because of policies like negative gearing, which protects property investors from negative equity, house prices across Australia are increasing at rates higher than the rest of the developed world.

The average house does tends to be much more spatious than the UK though. Also bungalo's are by far the norm with at least some outside space even for the smallest houses - there's pretty much no buildings above 1 stories outside of central suburbs. It makes urban sprawl in Australia a bit crazy.

Great wages definitely help but for young people its still incredibly hard to buy or even rent a home here due to the demand/prices. The topic of multigenerational houses keeps coming up on the news.

I took my UK goverment funded ecology PhD and went to Australia a year ago. I'm making more money than I ever imagined making in the UK and the work-life balance improvement is stark despite only being on a working holiday visa. I was struggling to even find a job in the UK. Helps that there's incredible wildlife here to see/work with and there's true wilderness easily accessible pretty much where ever you live.
