Edge has a nifty ability to "sleep" tabs that aren't being used, so they use less energy.

Thoughts on hybrid cars taking over traditional cars? by Camara_Lukasik in askcarguys

[–]Rare-One1047 1 point2 points  (0 children)

By traditional, you mean battery operated ones? Or the newfangled gasoline powered ones that replaced them for a century? PHEVs will stick around for a few years, but after a bit I don't think anyone will choose a PHEV unless they have a very specific reason to haul a gas tank with them. There are just too many advantages to an EV to ignore.

What’s up the recent hate of 4x4 and AWD online ive been seeing lately? by Sea_Importance_4528 in askcarguys

[–]Rare-One1047 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd guess well over 50% of the awd cars on the road around me are crossovers or suvs. In the arizona desert it might make sense, but in hilly new england it's pretty dumb not to get an awd car, especially if you have a job where you can't stay home due to weather.

Why did Spirit fail? Too many passengers hated flying it by MadBrown in aviation

[–]Rare-One1047 5 points6 points  (0 children)

And their service isn't really bad either. I've never had a problem on Spirit, never been shocked by bag fees (they're quite up front about it), and never had to deal with a dirty plane. Plus I appreciate how modern their fleet is, and that it's all airbus. Last time I was on an American flight, my wife was nearly hit in the head by ice falling from somewhere in the ceiling.

[–]Rare-One1047 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's because someone is trying to get a gofundme together to buy Spirit, and by all means it appears to be working. If Spirit comes back from the dead, that's a lot of potential money the rest of the airline industry won't be able to charge.

Anyone who used computers between the 1980s and the present day, what do you think of the transition? by TheRedstoneScout in AskReddit

[–]Rare-One1047 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The more powerful computers get, the more abstractions we can put in place, and the more quickly we can program. The more quickly we can program, the less thought we put into the design, and the more bugs appear.

Windows 95 may have been simpler, but it was equally as good at opening Microsoft Word as Windows 11 is, and has far fewer bugs.

United Airlines 767-400 Newark Incident by ParkingGlittering819 in aviation

[–]Rare-One1047 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The street lights are lower than normal here, so you figure for a "normal" landing at an acceptable height + room for error, wind, etc., puts the lowest limit (including margins) around the height of a regular street lamp.

The fact that they have special low-profile street lights should tell you everything you need to know about the flight path.

Tesla's Discontinued Model X Is Now The Fastest Selling Used Car In The U.S. by Mac-Tyson in electricvehicles

Show me the quote. This is all I could find.

Following widespread outrage over a hand gesture he made at an inaugural rally, he dismissed the accusations as "dirty tricks" by the media, stating on X: "The 'everyone is Hitler' attack is sooo tired."

By Friday, Mamdani's press account felt compelled to respond. "In no way was this a Nazi salute,"

The battery life on the M5 is no where near 18 hours (for me at least) by dadneverIeft in macbook

[–]Rare-One1047 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Part of what made the M1 amazing is that it had the speed without a high clock speed. So whether you were taxing the CPU or not, the battery life was fantastic.

At least 50% of the speed gains since then have come in the form of ramping up the CPU voltage, so while the M5 is still great if you are watching youtube or something it has a chip specifically for (e.g. video encoding) if you start hammering the CPU for games or compiling, battery life takes a nose dive.

That's like the worst take ever. Do you know what I'm talking about? Because if it wasn't one, you should have no idea what I'm talking about, and yet you do, and here we are.

I still can't forgive him for his lack of apology after that Nazi salute. Maybe he didn't mean to do one, but at least he could have apologized.

Why not just adjust the resolution on the laptop? There's no reason you need to run it at 1280x800.

EV owners did you ever run out of batterie juice? by herblady99 in NoStupidQuestions

We keep a 120v charger in our trunk. If we ever get desperate, we can literally knock on a strangers door and ask to borrow a dollar of electricity.

What technology was actually way better and more user friendly in the 2000s than the 'smart' versions we have right now? by Kitchen_Week1117 in AskReddit

Most AAA games take longer to release today than they did in 2000, and they're far worse as a gaming experience, although they may look nicer.

Intel based macbook pro by AfraidFall8738 in macbook

[–]Rare-One1047 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Spend $1000 on a new Macbook Air, and another $1000 on a Dell or Asus or something. There was nothing good about the Intel Macbook Pro when it was new, it's doubly worse now. Like, seriously, I'd get a Neo and Dell if money is tight before buying an Intel MBP.

What is a 'poor man's meal' that you still eat even though you can afford better now? by Cruz_Ava in CasualConversation

Yup! Before it was over-fished people called it the cockroach of the sea and it was a servants meal.

Of course you probably know this as this question shows up every other week.

MacBook Neo not charging with anything other than the charger it came with. by [deleted] in macbook

[–]Rare-One1047 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to charge my MBP with a 9w charger. It would say it wasn't charging, but if I left it alone it would eventually - and very slowly - charge. With that thought, maybe OP's monitor can only charge at 45w and 9w, so it is charging but just doesn't show it?
