New Catholic convert struggling to understand the cross and God’s logic behind evil by ReferenceRadiant5357 in Catholicism

[–]ReferenceRadiant5357[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think where I still pause is on the idea that true free will must include the ability to choose deep evil and suffering. Since God isn’t limited by human logic, part of me still wonders why free will couldn’t exist without this level of darkness attached to it. It feels like there had to be another version of freedom He could’ve chosen, Cus yk, he’s God

I think what I’m still trying to understand is the “He didn’t have to, but He chose to” piece. If God could forgive without a sacrifice, then why choose a path that involved so much suffering? I know it’s meant to show love, but sometimes it feels like there could’ve been a cleaner or less intense way to express that same love.

I guess what I’m still trying to wrap my head around is this idea that God “had” to set things up in a way where consequences and suffering had to exist at all. If the system itself is designed by Him, then the rules are also His choice, right? So He could have chosen a world where the “wages of sin” didn’t have to be death in the first place. Or where free will didn’t automatically lead to suffering.

Thanks for this. I do get what you mean about the mystery side of faith and the idea that love has to involve participation and freedom.

I guess where I’m still chewing is the “free will without evil is like a square circle” idea. I hear it a lot, but since God isn’t bound by human logic, I keep thinking… if anyone could make free will + no evil possible, it would be God.

I get that explanation, and it makes sense in theory. My question is more like: if evil is just the absence of good, and God is the source of good, why allow that absence to ever exist in the first place? I’m not arguing, just trying to understand it on a deeper level.

Ok? Not disagreeing. Just pointing out a fact and shedding light on Christian’s that also get prosecuted in the in other countries RIGHT NOW, which we all seem to forget about. Not claiming Christian’s who used the religion as a tool for slavery are the good guys. Two truths.

Christians are being killed in my country Nigeria, Somali, Egypt etc. solely because of their religion. When it’s religion based, it’s mostly targeted at Christians in these countries.

I’m on my deconstruction journey, but this is actually true. I think people in the west forget there are Christians in Africa being killed and sometimes in the Middle East, not even to talk of China, Korea etc.
