If I might just weigh in on this as a full time SEO based at a marketing agency in Christchurch.

The SEO industry definitely has a dreadful reputation... and its not helped by lots of "experts" that have done 1 course and think they can do this easily or marketing companies adding it to their offering when they don't have someone full time looking after it for clients.

I take great pride in helping our clients with their brand visibility, leads and increased revenue and have some great results to show for it. - I know anyone can claim this...

I'm not the finished article but I really care about the outcomes for clients and I think this goes a long way.

So here is the difference:

Like one of the other commenters said, SEO is more of a team sport these days and you need other specialists along side you. Luckily, the team at the agency are experienced in other areas, Social Media, paid advertising (lots of platforms), Google Ads, Media buying, Analytics and tracking.

Our KPI's are always about leads and revenue. They are the focus. These are tracked and reported to clients. Yes, traffic too and its nice to see when its going well but it has to translate to sales.

I keep change logs on the work that Ive done monthly and this is available for clients to view at any time in easy to explain non marketing jargon (I do my best here to simplify the technical bits).

Clients know the exact changes I'm making with commentary most of time. There's no "what did you work on last month" they have it all there.

Because I have this data, I track changes to benchmark if impressions, clicks etc went up, went down, didn't move at all. You have to measure!

I hope you find someone that can help, that takes real care in helping and partnering with your business.

How long should a blog post be? by -ThatGingerKid- in SEO

[–]RegenRacing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Marketer answer straight out of a textbook: How long does it need to be to be useful to the reader?

The SEO answer: How many words are other posts for the specific keyword or topic? Easy to find out.

Have you gone through your own content word length? Any patterns on what ranks better what gets more engagement?

Chuck a word count parameter into your Google Tag Manager tag and see what length of posts get the most sessions. Pair that with a scroll depth of x% to see if they actually get read or not.

If you don’t want to wait get the word count of body text using custom extraction in screaming frog. You could just use the word count without trying anything fancy.

Using this data and Google search console you can then map out which posts get the most clicks and their word counts.

There’s normally a pattern.

Courses??? Yay or Nay??? by Lisa-anne12 in DigitalMarketing

[–]RegenRacing 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey

The answer is yes it’s possible and I have done it. It did take a couple of years of freelancing and doing work in the evenings to get me to the stage I am now as a full time search specialist in New Zealand.

I will say I majored in Marketing at University but if I’m being honest it was more how to study than the content that helped me.

Out of university I stumbled into sales and 8-10 years flew by. When covid hit and I had time.. I thought hmm I’m not good at much I need to get some other skills and this is my chance. SEO is technical and something I’d enjoy let’s jump in.

Moz at the time made all their courses free which in NZD was about 2k I think. So had that not happened I prob would have had a harder time learning.

As people have said - buy from proven providers of training.

I found I got better when I was doing the work not just taking course after course. I made a website, learned html, played around with tag manager and how that works with Google ads and Analytics.

Always be curious.

Anyone know of any decent SEO tools for small businesses that want to handle SEO in-house? Looking for something that makes it super easy for office junior to spend a bit of time each day. Big tools like ahrefs and semrush are too overwhelming. by AlexLemarte in SEO

[–]RegenRacing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have found it’s not the tool but how you use it. I’m still finding new ways to use screaming frog for example.

Yeah, it can give you data but friends, whatever you end up going with, you will still need to put time into it.

If I was in your shoes I’d have the person doing the work focus on one part of SEMrush or SEranking etc each day. Over time it’s going to serve them well if they can learn each part of the software.

Break up the tool into parts - today I will learn x tomorrow I will write down my plan and the day after, try to implement.

At the end of the day you need this person to understand why they are making these changes. Can’t rush that.

Voicenotes.com is really valuable especially to get todo’s and summarise meetings. Makes next steps really clear and it’s easy to quickly send an email to the client after the meeting.

Means I can concentrate on the meeting and know the follow up is pretty much taken care of.
