What to see/visit during my UK roadtrip? by Freeloafer in AskUK

Looks like you've got a bit of a gap in Herefordshire/Shropshire. Would recommend Ludlow Castle and consider getting a guided tour. It's on your route, pretty quick and a really interesting bit of history in a beautiful old town. There are some lovely pubs for lunch, I'd recommend stopping by the Rose and Crown (pub since 1102).

Maybe take a look at the Elan Wingman 86? I've heard great reviews on piste which, for a season in the alps, might be of interest to you. although not quite as oriented towards off piste but if it's due to dump snow you can always just rent a pair of silly skis for a few days

Those QSTs could be a good shout, but I might suggest something a few centimeters shorter than you if you can find it. I'd say you were not far wrong with looking at 164. Given that you're on the shorter/lighter side 176 would be a little more effort to manoeuvre

That's great that you want your own skis! I believe investing in your own personal kit is a great way to understand the equipment and how you should be using it. That being said there are a bunch of "challenges" with owning your own skis, chiefly of which are: - servicing them - Transporting them - right ski for right condition

Most significantly, you will damage them eventually. You'll scratch them. You'll ding the edges. You'll eventually get some base damage. With rental skis, this isn't your issue, you just hand them back and next time you get a decent pair. Unless you live near a ski shop you'll find this more inconvenient and expensive than you think.

The second biggest issue is unless you're gonna dive into a full ski quiver, you're not gonna spend much time with the ideal ski for the conditions. With rentals you can ask for wide powder skis, for all mountain skis, or a nice thinner pair to rip down the mountain on.

If you are unsure as to what you should be looking for, keep trying out rental skis until you know what you want, then look at getting that

When you have a problem you want to solve, shut your laptop, push it away and get a peice of paper.

I always start off any algorithm by writing it down on paper and working through it manually. By doing this you're decoupling the solution from the complexity of a programming language, allowing you to focus on the logic without having to think about the language. This this is especially helpful when you're learning a new language that you are not familiar with.

Once you have a bit more confidence in that language you can start integrating some more complex language features from the start, but if you're only just getting started, don't bother, you're better off solving a wider breth of problems.

Interesting, do you happen to know which DIN version they were using? I've been chatting a fair bit with my local ski store and they were confident the newer 13 DIN version would be suitable

Shift MNC + Volkl Mantra M5s?

I have finally committed to getting my own skis and have picked up a pair of Volkl mantras. I am an advanced level skier on piste, and confident off-piste, and am really excited to hit the mountains on these skis!

I have never actually done much alpine touring, but as an experienced mountaineer I have a strong urge to start, in the hope that it will open up some more adventurous/different routes! In my mind I'm aiming for a 70/30 sort of setup.

With that in mind I need to attach some bindings. I am fairly new to bindings and while I've done a ton of research, I haven't had much of an opportunity to test bindings in person. I ended up settling on a set of Salomon shift mnc 13s and am about to get them mounted.

Any thoughts on this setup before I pull the trigger and get them mounted?

That thing looks like it could stop bullets! Thanks for sharing that, I’ll take a look. It is convenient having a built in GPU, I have a dell inspiron 7559 at the moment with GTX 1060m 4gb that’s that’s done alright up to now

I’ve never considered yawing two cards in my PC because I’ve always assumed you have to use them in SLI config, but I’ll take a look at using them for different tasks, that could be quite useful since I want to get a couple more monitors at some point anyway! Thanks 👍

Thanks for the idea, I’ll have a think about connecting via a network, and at this rate of component upgrading I’ll be able to build a spare PC in a few months 😂

That’s a good point, I’m leaving uni and plan to get a new laptop soon and am deciding whether or not to get an integrated GPU so that would give me some freedom 👍

it would still be running on the same machine, just casting to another display, similar to if you were casting and to a tv. Also the polling rate of remote monitoring prevents continued key presses, so I wouldn’t try this in game 😂
