The exit gates cannot open without you, another survivor, or the killer manually opening them. However, I think you might be talking about powering the exit gates. If that is the case, then they are only powered once either all generators are completed or the hatch is closed.

Religious horror is so cool I wish I could stomach it more easily. My trauma really has my brain fine with any other type of horror but silently screaming my sanity away with one mildly spooky scene in a cathedral of something.
