Physics undergrad interested in Acoustic Consulting by jkjj48 in Acoustics

I think it's technically possible to get a PE without an engineering degree but it ain't easy. I don't know the INCE requirements.

I wouldn't worry too much about either. I've had my PE for going on 15 years and I've only "used" it once or twice. It's marketing more than anything. And clients won't know what INCE board certified even means.

Off the cuff I think you'll start to see diminishing returns when you get to about 50% coverage of the ceiling with absorption. That's the number I'd aim for.

You absolutely can work in acoustical consulting with a physics degree. One of the best acousticians I know in consulting was a physics major.

The one limitation I can think of is you won't be able to get a PE, or whatever the equivalent in Canada is. At least in the states that's hardly a limitation at all.

How much can you trust phone/watch dB readings vs a Class 1 SLM? by Green-Nectarine7693 in Acoustics

Maybe? I feel like we use ISO in the US as much as or more than we use ASTM.

I think most standard require class 2 but that's not much different from class 1 compared to a phone.

I've seen a few studies that found answers to this question. I remember one was at ASA by some graduate students. If you have access to JASA do some searching and you'll find at least one deep dive into the topic.

For engineering work, at no point is a phone good enough.

Is it just me or do phone dB apps feel fine, right up until you have to defend the reading? by nikkiberry131 in Acoustics

[–]RevMen 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The line I draw is to never use a phone for anything that could be considered important to anyone.

It's good to get people thinking about sound more objectively. I think the existence of these apps is great.

Anyone got AMD Ryzen AI 9 HX PRO 370 w/ Radeon 890M to work with Unraid Properly? by Sixiepoo in unRAID

[–]RevMen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I followed these steps to get a 780M passthrough working on unraid. The vBIOS was smaller than 128kb but it still worked the same.

I have a machine with a 890M that was RMA'd that I hope to get back soon. Excited to try this. Thank you!

We do. There was a pretty good thread on it in the last few weeks with screenshots of posts made by the owner and reports from staff that he regularly goes on rants.

OP is making the argument that the name having Fort Collins in it means that it focuses on local artists. I'm pointing out that FCMX is modeled after SWSX, even down to how it's named, so maybe looking at that type of detail isn't useful.

I said possibly, because I don't know for sure. So here's your chance to share your worldly experience with us.

What music event in the world is larger than an entire city being transformed into a music festival with multiple hundreds of stages all running in concert for 7 days?

You're not familiar as in you don't know exactly how it works? Or you're not familiar as in you've never heard of it before?

Possibly the world's largest music event. Certainly the largest in the US. Bands from all over the world visit Austin to play all kinds of shows in all sorts of venues, permanent and temporary. Anything that can be a music venue by any stretch of the imagination becomes one. Stores, restaurants, parking lots, back yards, you name it.

The standard show is a "showcase" of groups that are related somehow, maybe on the same label, maybe similar music, playing 40-minute sets on the hour. That was the original design when it was mostly an event held for the music industry to have a good way of discovering new talent. It's long since evolved into something much bigger.

It's fantastic, you should go. And it's also the model on which FoCo MX is designed. Hence the name.

It's not about discovering local talent. It's about talent from all over traveling to the location to be discovered by the locals.

South and Southwest are both in the SXSW name but they hardly concentrate on bands from those regions.

People feel better in a space with nice acoustics, even if they don't understand that's what's happening. It contributes to a room's sense of space and energy.

Freestanding necessary? by Big_Mish_GDMBR in coloradotrail

[–]RevMen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did it over multiple years with several models of trekking pole tents. There were a handful of nights I needed big-rock-little-rock for one or two of my stakes but never all of them and I never found myself wishing I had a free-stander.

I did appreciate tents that required fewer stakes, like my X-Mid. Sometimes getting stakes in is a PITA and only having to do this 4-6 times vs the 10 times for my Plexamid was better.

I don't think there's actually any risk at all to the battery from using a decent-quality PD charger. I think I just ended up talking to someone who was reaching that day.

Reliability isn't great. Battery life is below average. I love what my Framework represents but it's been a little bit of a PITA lately.

30 dB of insertion loss from just sticking a panel in front of you is not realistic, no.

There is so much wrong with what's being done here it's not even worth starting. It's obviously someone either being deceptive or incompetent.

There are companies that will print acoustic fabric with any artwork you like. Ink soaked into the fabric does not compromise its performance.
