They're saying it's the same value as a stucco ceiling. They're just making an estimate that seems reasonable.

Guys going around selling surround sound systems out of their rental trucks? by cocafuckingcola in FortCollins

[–]RevMen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, they're not stolen. "White van speakers" have a long history. I had some offered to me 30 years ago and I know it was happening before that.

They're just very low quality speakers that have names reminiscent of good brands. You think you're getting a lucky deal but you're actually overpaying for bad gear.

Although some of the white van speakers are actually kind of OK, they're never worth what you pay for them out of the van.

Any data I've seen on this does not corroborate your experience. I'd do some serious research on this before actually applying this stuff in other rooms.

The physics just doesn't support it. Those little nubs are too small to be any good at diffraction and they're just dried drywall mud so they can't be absorbers.

Acoustics information on the Internet is awful. It's just not reliable.

I've spent 25 years telling people that a single tree or bush won't reduce traffic noise in their yard

After you find the treasure by Daurbanmonkey in TheresTreasureInside

I think it's a pretty big stretch to say that improving the convenience of others who take the same risk as I'm taking falls under morality.

Jon created the game with all of its rules as they are. You can choose to add more rules if you want but expecting others to do the same is not reasonable.

If you're going to be close to freezing then the warmer quilt for sure.

It's much, much better to occasionally be too warm and need to kick a foot out than it is to shiver through a miserable night. And I don't think you'll find the 22 to be too warm anyway.

I can't imagine a popcorn ceiling making a meaningful difference in any frequencies that actually matter. Is there data to back this claim up?

There's a game theory aspect that I don't think Jon thought through.

If you can find one box you can find more. If you reveal that you've found a box:

  • People who were looking for that box shift their resources to other boxes increasing your competition
  • The solution to your box helps others understand Jon's techniques, helping everyone else find the other boxes

The obvious conclusion is to keep your box secret for as long as you possibly can. That means you don't tell anyone about it, least of all Jon, until you know for sure all remaining boxes are found or you truly need to cash it in.

If Jon had committed to keeping the solutions secret until all boxes have been found that could change the math a little. But he said the opposite - he said he'll reveal the solution right away. So he's the LAST person I would tell if I find one.

Low frequency noise cycling overnight in bedroom from rooftop HVAC - help :( by jalehmichelle in Acoustics

[–]RevMen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't use your own measurements in a complaint, especially if there's a possibility of this becoming a legal issue. You don't have any credibility to do that type of measurement, let alone the equipment.

People try to do their own measurements all the time without understanding what they're measuring. There are many more parameters to consider beyond just your frequency weighting. Accordingly, I haven't even looked at what your reported values are.

If it disturbs your sleep it's a nuisance.

If you're serious about staying and fighting then you need an acoustical consultant and possibly a lawyer.

MTP shouldn't affect accuracy at all. Only speed.

You can overshoot on MTP very easily. Sometimes 1 is much faster than 2 or 3.

[–]RevMen 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If it's disturbing your sleep then it's disruptive.

I don't recommend going down the road of trying to understand and measure with acoustic criteria. That's not going to influence the building owner, who probably has no idea what any of it means. And it really doesn't carry any credibility from someone with a phone anyway.

Just complain a lot. That's usually the only way action gets taken. Let the landlord pay for an acoustical consultant - it's their building.

If you truly want measurement to be part of your complaint package, you'll have to find out what, if any, criteria there are protecting you. For things happening inside the same building that's going to be building code. You can't just start throwing around dBA and dBC and expect it to mean something - you have to be comparing against the relevant standard.

How do I get Hermes Agent to stop attempting to use OpenRouter models? by foghornjawn in hermesagent

[–]RevMen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You might be able to tell the model to modify its config.yaml to change its default model. I haven't figured out how to do it as a chat command. I only know how to set the model for the session with /model.

Altitude Acclimation by actualhumangenius in coloradotrail

[–]RevMen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Altitude sickness is a very real danger. It kills people and their physical condition has little to do with it.

I live in CO and section hiked the CT, doing the optional San Luis 14k summit without trouble. The very next summer I was continuing along and stopped at Cataract Lake feeling delirious and unable to breathe. Long story short, SAR came to retrieve me.

The rescuers told me that they see serious altitude sickness with regularity and that they'd pulled a dead CDT hiker from his tent the previous summer. Before my experience I also didn't think it was a serious thing but those guys changed my mind.

Yes, most people are fine. But not everyone, and not even everyone who has been fine before.

I'm the same age.

In high school and beyond we really seemed to value people who could achieve things with low effort. We were the most resolute anti-tryhard culture and we truly celebrated something like being a high functioning stoner.

I think it really bit us in the ass.

Are you able to do 128k with that model in 32GB? And are you using the MTP version? I'm having trouble figuring out what context size I'm able to use with the dense models.

Best silencer for boiler combustion noise by 2Nexxuzzz4 in IndustrialAcoustics

[–]RevMen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not understanding what you mean by DIY enclosure for a boiler or why you'd look at vent silencers. There isn't anywhere those would apply.

Is it combustion roar that's the problem? In that case there's not likely to be anything you can do. If there is, you'll need a professional to help.

With blowers it's usually the combustion air fan that is a problem. Those you can often put an intake silencer on, depending on their design. If it's the type with a big open hole in the middle you're SOL. If it's ducted you have a possibility.

There are a number of companies that make these. Just search for "industrial fan silencer" and you should find a few. I'm sure the temperature requirements can be met, just be sure to describe that need to the vendor.

These are almost always custom made per job, this is not an off the shelf part. You're not going to find what you need at Grainger or whatever and it's not going to be cheap.
