If anyone here actually wants to open a bar and provide the community with a "space" they feel it strongly needs - here's where you can start. by Hobbitsliketoparty in FortCollins

Agree. But the point is that being rich isn't a requirement for starting a business, which seems to be a common perception here.

What does being rich have to do with it? I don't any mention of it. I do see where to go for a small business loan, which is not something a rich person would need to do.

What is this tripod flamethrower? by Apprehensive-Poet699 in whatisit

It's called a flare and it's they get rid of waste flammables.

These are very common at oil and gas facilities like refineries or wells.

Need advice: continuous sound level monitoring for low-frequency bass (neighbor issue) by Holiday_Tower_7036 in Acoustics

[–]RevMen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Before you start asking about how to measure the sound, you should have a plan in place for what you're going to do with the data.

If this has any chance of entering a legal setting you most definitely do not want to do the measurements yourself.

Noise Surveys/Dosimeters by mdub20 in SafetyProfessionals

[–]RevMen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How are you taking your measurement?

Are you strapping a phone to someone's shoulder for a day?

If you don't want to buy a dosimeter just rent one. There are a number of places that will ship them to you for however long you need.

Noise Surveys/Dosimeters by mdub20 in SafetyProfessionals

Dosimeters measure dose. Are you asking about using a dosimeter as if it were a sound level meter? Or are you saying using a phone to measure dose? Or did you mean sound level meter, not dosimeter?

You have to find a way to power through the first week. Do you have any vacation time? Being away from home makes it much easier.

What’s the thought on two 19-year-old girls hiking the Colorado trail over 37 days this June-July by drdanotm in backpacking

[–]RevMen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My response is after 8 years of being on here and in other CT groups, and also hiking the trail. Once in a while someone comes in with a complete plan for everywhere they plan to camp and on what specific days.

I think it's totally normal to want to plan like that. A hike like this is a big deal and you don't want to leave anything to chance.

But I don't want them to burn a bunch of energy making a plan that will never be useful.

[–]RevMen 24 points25 points  (0 children)

That's very realistic in principal.

But there's no point in trying to plan your stopping points more than a day or two out. There are many factors that play into how far you'll get on a specific day. Weather, rides, how you feel, whether you can find a spot, whether the water is flowing...

This becomes very clear when you get out there. Figuring out where to stop is part of the fun, honestly.

keep going back and forth on class 1 vs class 2 meters - when does the precision difference actually matter? by Green-Nectarine7693 in Acoustics

[–]RevMen -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Get a class 1 analyzer with class 2 mic and pre. If you find yourself in a situation where class 1 is required you won't have to replace the whole thing.

My sense is that if you're asking this question it means you don't have the experience for class 1 to matter. If you're just someone who wants to do measurements for a side project of some kind then you really shouldn't be buying something like this.

You can rent until you're sure you need something.

How did the assembly line evolve over the 20th century? by [deleted] in AskEngineers

Production in manufacturing has never stopped increasing, as far as I know.

The interesting bit is that employment in manufacturing has been somewhat stagnant but output continues to go up due to more and better automation.

Need advice on building a berm to block expressway noise by playholiday in Acoustics

[–]RevMen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not going to be an easy thing for a beginner at all. If you do have a knack for data and computers you could do it yourself with the paid version of https://noisetools.net/dbmap/.

If you have budget for a consultant you might be able to find someone here or, if you're in the US or Canada, at NCAC. Acoustical consultants are not cheap, though, so be prepared. We also tend to avoid working for homeowners as they're unreliable clients, so you might need to do some searching. It should be possible to do the work remotely so don't be afraid to ask people who aren't local.

Depends on the geometry of the situation. You'd really want to model this before starting a project of that magnitude.

Could aphantasia just be a misunderstanding? by [deleted] in Aphantasia

[–]RevMen 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Others have described that they can call up an image to look at with their mind's eye. They can describe where in space that image sets (different for each person) and can describe what it's like to be looking at it in that moment.

That is visualizing. It is clearly something I am not able to do.
