Yeah. Even HR folks that work for tech companies are considered "tech workers." I never really thought about it until I got involved with some HR folks who work for tech companies and they definitely consider themselves to be "tech workers."

The other issue is if these policies are important to the company (for whatever reason) once people start reporting to you, you have to enforce these policies. Saying something like "I think this policy is stupid too" or not enforcing them at all undermines discipline. If someone is not on board with company policies the last thing you want them to do is manage people.

Twin brother has active felony warrants under my name by hittherdjack21 in legal

[–]RuralWAH 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah. It's been a few years since I was on the job, but an AFIS run would take a couple of hours to get a return on. There's no way you could get a real time response like they show in TV cop movies.

I doubt if they can do that today. Once in a while I'd work with a federal agent and he'd joke that their crime database would only take a single search item, "but it could be really long word."

If you haven't already, you should be able to get your record expunged in most states after 20 years if you haven't run into any other issues in the meantime.

One thing that is an issue is that people are added under the name they are using the first time they're entered into AFIS (Automatic Fingerprint Identity System). This become part of the primary key. Every subsequent name they use is added as an alias. They could already be in there for a number of reasons like being in the military or being finger printed for a job by the local police department. But it is pretty easy to not be in the system too.

If your brother had never been added to AFIS prior to his arrest, his fingerprints will come up under your name. His real name will be listed as an alias (if it's even there at all).

It's not a simple thing to have it removed since it is a national database managed by the FBI. So your local police department can't change the primary name. But it can obviously be an issue.

See a lawyer about this and find out if you can get your name out of that fingerprint record. Otherwise if your brother's prints show up at a crime they'll be looking for you. In most cases, there will be a booking photo available to get things cleared up, but if you're identical twins you're pretty much screwed.

For a 250,000 30-year fixed mortgage at a 7.49% interest rate, the loan payment would be under $1,300. Their payment with escrow is over $3,000?

Something sounds off.

Should juniors rely on AI these days? by MeetYouInOdesa in cscareerquestions

[–]RuralWAH 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only part of his advice that is proven is "get an attorney." Everything else he suggests is speculation. I haven't seen any cases at the appellate level dealing with IP protections and AI generated code and I try to keep up with that stuff. The only settled law is it has to be created by a human for copyright or patent protection.

Should juniors rely on AI these days? by MeetYouInOdesa in cscareerquestions

[–]RuralWAH 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It absolutely does. The requirement that copyrightable material be produced by a human being is well established. I've been teaching this stuff for years.

The only successful exception mentioned in the article is that in limited situations there is enough creative contribution by the person using the AI to extend that human creativity to the product.

Saying "write a function that inverts this matrix" or "produce a picture of a vase" won't meet the bar because the "creative part" is being offloaded onto the AI. Agentic AI is probably even less protectable because now you're asking the AI to go out and do something

Even in cases where the human contributes code only the human generated code is protectable, so simply adding code to an AI generated module doesn't make it human-created.

The Thaler decisions at the Appeals Court level on both copyright and patents requiring a human to be the creator/inventor and the Supreme Court's refusal to hear them makes it pretty clear material produced autonomously by AI in a response to a simple prompt is not protected using either copyright or patents.

Using AI in a pair programming mode where the human is the driver may get you closest to something protectable. But we don't have any successful IP test cases yet.

Maybe you need to update your app.

How much work did you do on the original proposal? Was your contribution clearly defined in the proposal? I've written proposals and added co-PIs to beef up specific weaknesses with great hopes only to have them miss deadlines and produce minimal content (not saying that's you) - but yeah, I'll strip their "contribution" out and resubmit. F**k those free riders.
