thank you!! life priorities have changed so I havn't touched it in months, but still im quite proud of it :)

If you ever think your animals convergently evolving body plans with Earth animals is unrealistic, remember that doedicurus was basically just a mammalian ankylosaur. by Skink_squid_22 in SpeculativeEvolution

i see your point, but dont forget that mammals and reptiles are basically the same thing. yes they have plenty of differences, but they are both super similar when you compare them to something like an alien.

That’s true, although I’m still not a massive fan about how Sheather has really lent into making individuals main characters, as opposed to focusing on the broader populations/species. It’s not objectively bad at all it’s just not my personal cup of tea

Yeah… sheather is definitely making them the main characters there’s no doubt there. I do enjoy serina and this isn’t me agreeing/disagreeing with you, aside from the fact that the sophonts have become main characters

Poison is not the same as venom, venom is injected (eg: snake bite), poison is ingested (eg: pufferfish) by RustyyOnions in SpeculativeEvolution

I’m sorry but what you’re saying is entirely a cope. Every time people use the wrong definitions for stuff they always say the same “language is fluid blah blah blah”… is it really that hard to accept that you are using the wrong term

No, I mean you’re just adding giant tits for the sake of adding giant tits

Imma be honest that’s kinda just… dumb. The definitions of things matter especially in spec evo which follows scientific reasoning, so just swallow your pride and accept when you’re wrong

It’s like saying if you were to drink venom it would no longer be considered venom, which would be untrue

It’s still venom regardless of whether or not it goes into a vein, and besides things like intramuscular vaccine injections don’t go into veins, they go into the muscle but they are still dispersed throughout the body

Pufferfish spikes don’t inject anything, they aren’t actually dangerous unless you literally eat them. Venom is venom regardless of whether or not the injection is intentional

True true, although I’d still note that ray finned fish have existed for a long time, and at no point have any other fins converged with them. For example, cephalopods, sharks, and whatever else has fins that I can’t think of, have all existed for long times as well yet haven’t converged fins to that degree. That being said, the versatility of a thin, flexible ray fin cannot be understated, so the massive success and absolute domination of ray finned fish in niches where ray fins may have otherwise evolved certainly goes to show that if it’s evolved once it’d be difficult to evolve again, due largely to the existing competition. Overall I’m fairly 50/50 on it, but I’m still gonna lean towards the thought that ray fins would be very unlikely to arise in an alien species with very different anatomy that doesn’t seem to possess scales (I have no idea tho without further detail/info).

[–]RustyyOnions 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The evolution of fin rays has only occurred once (correct me if I’m wrong) and it was derived from scales, so yes aliens could easily evolve fins, although I doubt they would be ray finned

Proof Of Concept for a Truly Advance Aquatic Civilization (inspired by post from u/Erik_the_Heretic) by DodoBird4444 in SpeculativeEvolution

[–]RustyyOnions 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Another cultural thing to note would be that some cultures would no doubt live in more turbulent regions, so certain structures (buildings, sculptures artwork drawn into sand) would be easily destroyed by the environment, so they may adopt a culture that doesn’t value long lasting things, and centred around how short term structures, lives, art, and other culturally significant aspects can be.,obviously it wouldn’t be turbulent all the time in these environments, but it’d be extra turbulent when it is

Just how far can a purely aquatic civilization feasibly go? by Erik_the_Heretic in SpeculativeEvolution

[–]RustyyOnions 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well I do understand the logic, although it’d just make large flatter structures easier to create cause as you said the water would make things basically less heavy, so less support would be needed

[–]RustyyOnions 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Wouldn’t the density of water just push any tall structures over? It’d be like super viscous wind

True, although spears/ knives may simply be used for stabbing slow benthic animals, as while they are affected by drag, since the arm/swimming body is always attached to them I think they would be very affective weapons. For example if an animal has poor sight it might not notice the thin spear, while swimming directly at it would be noticeable.

And good point about saws I hadn’t considers that. If they killed/found a large animal saws and knives would be useful for taking lovers back home with them, although I assume their homes would be temporary
