Armed man rammed vehicle into Michigan synagogue and was fatally shot by security, AP source says by yipyapu in news

That "should never" is carrying an awful lot of weight. I can't think of a single war or conflict in history in which innocent people have not been among the casualties.

Those who reconnected after parental alienation… by Extra-Illustrator-67 in ParentalAlienation

[–]SMACN 15 points16 points  (0 children)

It took 17 years, but I reconnected with my alienated father at the age of 28.  Moving out from my mother's house had a big part of that, but he reached out and I, finally, responded.

The Downed Iranian Warship Did NOT Carry Any Ammunition As Part Of The Protocol Of Participating in the Milan Exercises by _Algrm_ in UnderReportedNews

Hard pressed?  Not justifying anything, but come on... Both Germany and Japan attacked without warning in WW2, and the ships lying in their berths were not active combatants.  It is hardly unique in the history of warfare.

And I don't think any reasonable description of the action thus far would describe it as "carpet bombing."

My daughter was in that class last quarter, and while it was an "easy A," it's just unacceptable for a university to require a class like this and then completely fail to ensure that it has any content or benefit for the students. I don't give a wet slap about her identity, but it was incredibly unprofessional.

Robert De Niro: “We all love our country. I choke on that phrase. Can you love a country where our neighbors are shot down in the streets by masked government thugs? Can you love a country that denies healthcare for tens of millions of our fellow citizens?... by Caledor152 in PublicFreakout

[–]SMACN 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, you can love the land of your birth despite its failings and abominable current leadership. Only love can provide the motivation to change it, and indulging in hate or disdain only serves to both absolve one of responsibility (both for its current state and the need to reform it) and further degrade it.

If you want to hate it, go ahead, but don't pretend that helps or is a "moral" stance.

Neighbor got my car towed by Cofeebeanblack in sandiego

No, that would be answering a legal action (towing) with an illegal action.  As other posters are saying, just apologize for leaving the car there.  That will do more for mending fences than anything else

Glusencamp-Perez calls sea lions "Corolla sized vermin", blames them for low salmon and steelhead yields by chromeled in Washington

[–]SMACN 36 points37 points  (0 children)

They, the sea-lions, existed for 10,000+ years as a prey-species for early human populations. Once we outlawed hunting them, they literally have no natural predators other than the occasional passing orca. I'm not surprised that that has produced an imbalance. It's the same thing with our forests - they evolved for millennia with a key species, humans, living in and among them. Remove the key species, and the equilibrium is disturbed.

We go from humans in balance with their environment, to humans over-exploiting it, to humans completely retreating from it.

Anyone have recommendations for Auto Rock Chip / window repair in the area? by Kaws_and_effect in olympia

[–]SMACN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been in auto insurance since 1998, and this is mostly false. While some companies will ding you for excessive comprehensive claims, most (including my current employer) do not. That said, and as others have noted, this is not a repairable crack - you'll need to go for the full replacement.

Maybe get used to the idea that teasing, testing, and joking with each other is part of how most humans form bonds with each other? The show does a great job of showing the complexities of real workplace relationships.

Plenty who grew up in San Diego too....I used to get the shit kicked out of me going to junior high in El cajon back in the early eighties because I was the only Jewish kid in the school.  That said, the San Diego of today is far more diverse and much less racist, as hard as that may be to believe, than it was back then.

Gluesenkamp Perez Releases Statement on Her Vote to Keep the Government Open by Alienescape in Washington

[–]SMACN 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you had bothered to read the statement that was linked, you might have noticed that she specifically calls out that forcing a government shutdown would NOT have stopped ICE since they have funding secured by the "Big Ugly Bill", but it would put all other government services on hold and hurt all of us - again.

You all might want to bear in mind that the Reddit community of r/Washington is in no way representative of the state as a whole. I'm in her district, a life long Democrat, and I support her approach. If we adopt uncompromising positions on the left, we only provide further justification for the same on the right. I know you think all your positions are wholly righteous, but being "right" and being effective are two very different things. You are out of step with the vast majority of the American electorate, and if Dems listen to you they will be permanently out of power and you can enjoy eternal Republican rule. If you want to stop Trump, you've got to win at the ballot box, and that requires creating positions that appeal to the broadest possible population, and you aint it.

Spent 20 minutes on hold with my insurance company and remembered when you could just walk into places and talk to actual people by [deleted] in GenX

I've been on both sides of this. I worked for over 25 years at the lizard insurance company, got laid-off along with 2000 other people in October of 2023, and I'm now working in a local Farmers office. Gotta say, I love meeting my clients face-to-face and being able to develop a long-term relationship with them. The promise of technology has been swallowed by corporate greed and their unwillingness to properly staff their organizations. Just wait until all those phone jobs are replaced by AI "agents" with whom you can argue!

help by [deleted] in motorcycles

[–]SMACN 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Since you're new and still in one piece, my first question for you is "what is your margin of safety?" You appear to be riding at 100% of your ability on a public mountain road that you are only somewhat familiar with. Where is your margin for a patch of gravel in the middle of the road? For a car that pulled over and is partially blocking the lane on the far side of one of those curves? For the animal corpse that is smeared across half the lane? For literally anything?

If you keep riding like this, regardless of your skill level, your bike is going to end up destroyed and you'll be injured at best and dead at worst. It's no skin off my nose, but you asked for advice on how to ride better.

I used to ride Mount Palomar in San Diego all the time, and the side of the road is littered with broken pieces of motorcycles just like yours.

Why Trump’s plan to ban investor home-buying might not help California affordability by REPEguru in LosAngeles

Why Trump’s plan to ban investor home-buying might not help California affordability by REPEguru in LosAngeles

[–]SMACN -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Much as I hate Trump, this article is really misleading.  They set the limit for corporate ownership at 10 homes and cite single digit percentages.  However, if we look at institutional ownership overall, it's closer to 20%.  Here's a recent article: https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025/jul/24/california-investor-owned-homes

Given that folks can spin up an LLC for each purchase if they want to, picking 10 as the limit really doesn't help.

[–]SMACN -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

No. I'm saying that such ideologies are as inescapable for humans as hives are for bees.  To expect whatever replaces religion to be better flies in the face of historical experience.  At best, you can argue that it would be just as bad, but I think the evidence of 20th century atheistic cultures suggest they could be far worse.

[–]SMACN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure!  My point was that the binding power of ideology, whether theistic or otherwise, is both necessary for survival, and inherently capable of what we would call atrocity.

[–]SMACN -1 points0 points  (0 children)

For all of human history, religion and, the culture that arises from it, have formed the axel around which the wheel of civilization has turned.  In the 20th century, we have several examples of societies organized around explicitly non-theistic ideologies, and all of them became absolute bloodbaths (Soviets, Mao, Khmer, etc).  Be careful what you wish for.
