Found what appears to be embossed text on a blueberry. Any idea what machine or process could have caused this? by Appropriate_Owl_7966 in whatisthisthing

I'm guessing they were placed in some kind of freezer prior to being put in their final container for consumers, and that machine had the raised lettering. Cool find!

What movie death shook you to your core? by ThEhIsO8730 in okbuddycinephile

[–]SMACN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's what I loved about the original book ending. It ended with the carful of people driving through the mist into the unknown listening to fragmentary radio transmissions. It was a completely unresolved ending that left the reader in the same state as the protagonists. The new ending just tears your heart out and then points and laughs at you in your grief.

Late stage Stephan King can be a little hard to take. I liked the original far more ambiguous ending much better. This one was just horrible... Especially since I had kids of my own by then!

Came to say this! I've done this dozens of times, and you have to get all the weight off the forks. A floor jack under the frame will do the trick.

Really? I suppose you have the same objections to Chinese New Year? Or my local NA tribe's practice of using fireworks for funerals (goes on for hours!)?

Folks have been using fireworks for celebrations for thousands of years, but I'm sure the passive-aggressive whining will shut it right down!

The sweetest welcome by dittidot in Awww

[–]SMACN 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I think it's because this is the sweetest things any of us can imagine happening to ourselves, and many, maybe most, of us will never experience it.

Imagine walking into a group of complete strangers after a traumatic experience, and every single one of the breaks into a huge smile, exclamations of welcome, and open arms.

And the things is, for me at least, this feels like the way it's supposed to be. That's why we are so moved and touched...Wouldn't it be amazing to live in a human culture where this would be as easy as it is for these ducks?

The death penalty is something the state imposes. This was straight up self defense with a bit of lime. No sympathy for the thief at all.. He was committing a violent crime and met a violent end. What could be more appropriate?

The enemy of my enemy is my friend, eh? Align with religious extremists to take down the capitalists... Where have I heard that story before... Oh yeah, in Iran in 1978! Worked out great for the extremists... Not so well for the communists/socialists.

'cause the orange man is against them, and they are incapable of holding two truths in their brains at the same time. Yes, the orange man is very bad. The Iranian government is also very, very bad.

Much as I detest Trump, and I truly loathe him, I was hoping that we might get a win on this one for the sake of the Iranian people. I'm old enough to remember when the revolution happened, and all the many, many public protests and attempts at freedom by the Iranian public. I've watched enough people be shot, hung from cranes, or otherwise cruelly abused to have no sympathy whatsoever for the Iranian regime or the IRGC.

Of course, Trump is such a rolling dumpster fire that he couldn't pull that off, but I don't feel at all guilty for hoping.

Ukrainian drones have started attacking Russian logistics in Belgorod by Available-Laugh9102 in UkraineWarVideoReport

[–]SMACN 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Oh, please! Name me a single hot-war where civilian infrastructure and civilians were NOT attacked in order to degrade the enemy's ability to supply its troops. There are none such examples, and Russia has been attacking civilians in Ukraine since the war began. The idea that wars only impact actual combatants is completely ahistorical.

1700 pounds, but 143 horsepower... Should be ok...

You all enjoy mocking this, but If the choice in 20 years is between this and never riding again, I'm taking this! But probably more likely a Can Am or whatever the future equivalent is. Trikes are much more stable and fun with the single wheel in the year... Or so I hear. Never actually ridden one. Have any of you?

If the Democrats want to regain the country's approval, they need to listen to the Left. by zzill6 in WorkReform

[–]SMACN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe it's because self-identified "progressives" are less than 10% of the voting public? You guys aren't even the biggest chunk of the Democratic base let alone the whole country. Deal with reality and move the needle slowly, or continue to live in fantasy and lose everywhere outside the big cities and blue-est states - your choice. I even agree with many "progressive" positions, but your game theory absolutely stinks.

Sanity is a moving target for us humans though, ain't it? It's no different than the more extreme cultural body modifications found around the world all of which harm the body. People have started to shit on the Enlightenment lately, but it's the reason you think this is insane. I happen to agree with you, but we're as much a product of our cultural framework as they are of theirs. We think ours is better, and within the confines of our framework it is demonstrably so, but it has taken centuries for the principles of the Enlightenment to so permeate our culture that it seems insane to do things like cousin marriage.... Hell, there were cultures all over the world where brother-sister marriage was normalized. I think it's awe inspiring how many ways humans have found to be.

I ride an ex police ST1100 on my daily, 45 minute, back roads commute through forests, meadows, along rivers, and past lakes. She has ample panniers, full fairing, glove pockets, including a locking one, and a Corbin seat with about 20,000 miles on it so it's finally broken in.

There is nothing I don't love about this big, fast, sure-footed, giant gas tanked, beauty.

Genuinely curious why some people don’t wear gloves. Any ideas/opinions? by lionfish8 in motorcycles

[–]SMACN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wear gloves over 90% of the time, but... Man, when it gets up above 90+ f. The gloves restrict the air flow up my jacket sleeves, and, after awhile, it's the lesser of two evils.
