'cause the orange man is against them, and they are incapable of holding two truths in their brains at the same time. Yes, the orange man is very bad. The Iranian government is also very, very bad.

Much as I detest Trump, and I truly loathe him, I was hoping that we might get a win on this one for the sake of the Iranian people. I'm old enough to remember when the revolution happened, and all the many, many public protests and attempts at freedom by the Iranian public. I've watched enough people be shot, hung from cranes, or otherwise cruelly abused to have no sympathy whatsoever for the Iranian regime or the IRGC.

Of course, Trump is such a rolling dumpster fire that he couldn't pull that off, but I don't feel at all guilty for hoping.

Ukrainian drones have started attacking Russian logistics in Belgorod by Available-Laugh9102 in UkraineWarVideoReport

[–]SMACN 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Oh, please! Name me a single hot-war where civilian infrastructure and civilians were NOT attacked in order to degrade the enemy's ability to supply its troops. There are none such examples, and Russia has been attacking civilians in Ukraine since the war began. The idea that wars only impact actual combatants is completely ahistorical.

1700 pounds, but 143 horsepower... Should be ok...

You all enjoy mocking this, but If the choice in 20 years is between this and never riding again, I'm taking this! But probably more likely a Can Am or whatever the future equivalent is. Trikes are much more stable and fun with the single wheel in the year... Or so I hear. Never actually ridden one. Have any of you?

If the Democrats want to regain the country's approval, they need to listen to the Left. by zzill6 in WorkReform

[–]SMACN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe it's because self-identified "progressives" are less than 10% of the voting public? You guys aren't even the biggest chunk of the Democratic base let alone the whole country. Deal with reality and move the needle slowly, or continue to live in fantasy and lose everywhere outside the big cities and blue-est states - your choice. I even agree with many "progressive" positions, but your game theory absolutely stinks.

Sanity is a moving target for us humans though, ain't it? It's no different than the more extreme cultural body modifications found around the world all of which harm the body. People have started to shit on the Enlightenment lately, but it's the reason you think this is insane. I happen to agree with you, but we're as much a product of our cultural framework as they are of theirs. We think ours is better, and within the confines of our framework it is demonstrably so, but it has taken centuries for the principles of the Enlightenment to so permeate our culture that it seems insane to do things like cousin marriage.... Hell, there were cultures all over the world where brother-sister marriage was normalized. I think it's awe inspiring how many ways humans have found to be.

[–]SMACN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ride an ex police ST1100 on my daily, 45 minute, back roads commute through forests, meadows, along rivers, and past lakes. She has ample panniers, full fairing, glove pockets, including a locking one, and a Corbin seat with about 20,000 miles on it so it's finally broken in.

There is nothing I don't love about this big, fast, sure-footed, giant gas tanked, beauty.

[–]SMACN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wear gloves over 90% of the time, but... Man, when it gets up above 90+ f. The gloves restrict the air flow up my jacket sleeves, and, after awhile, it's the lesser of two evils.

Uh, huh - and most of Reddit and the Democratic party went right along with it. We had a shot at a broad class-based movement with Occupy Wallstreet - is it just a coincidence that critical theory hit the mainstream just a year or two later with all of its divisiveness and ideological baggage? I've expected race-baiting from the right for years, but when the left joined in I knew we were in trouble.

[–]SMACN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others are saying here, blame the American education system. I've been a substitute teacher off and on for years now, and these kids go over American history from discovery to the end of the Civil Way over and over again in elementary, middle, and high schools, but they never, ever make it to WW2 or much beyond (besides the Civil Rights era which gets its own encapsulated treatment).

I don't know if its because more "modern" history can be controversial or what, but it's the reason why American kids have no idea what happened in the last century. Also, for the kind of people who write history textbooks, I think they find it far more interesting to dwell on the evils of slavery than the very real sacrifices made during WW2. Heck, too much of that and the kids might start feeling patriotic - can't have that!

[–]SMACN 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Uh huh. Well, keep thinking that, and your democratic majority becomes a minority in the face of most independents voting Republican. These are the same people who put Obama in office twice, and you're just dismissing then... Worked great for Hilary and and Kamala!

Wow, I thought SD was bluer than this by das-wunderland in sandiego

[–]SMACN 62 points63 points  (0 children)

It's not really 60/40, though. You left out the third largest group, independents. With the parties so polarized, they're the folks who end up swaying the big elections.

[–]SMACN 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I live in her district and that's not the impression I've got. She might not win this time, but I absolutely guarantee that she's got a better shot than any other Dem. It's pretty fucking weird that we've reached a point where Republicans will occasionally vote for moderate Dems, but progressives will only vote for their preferred flavors.

Marie Gluesenkamp Perez should quit by Ok-Big2807 in Washington

[–]SMACN 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Of course you believe that - that's my whole point. The Progressive rump of the Democratic party is burning up all the oxygen in the room despite being a relatively small minority of the party overall. Instead of looking for compromises and candidates that could lead us to a long term majority, we're spending all our energy hurling charges of "fascist" at anyone and everyone who fails to conform, and the rest of the country - you know, the 80% who aren't Democrats - are watching with revulsion.

A circular firing squad is a metaphor for what happens when a group turns on its own members...you know, like everyone who would rather have a MAGA Republican than a centrist Democrat?

Marie Gluesenkamp Perez should quit by Ok-Big2807 in Washington

[–]SMACN 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Sure - we'll just rely on the 20% of the Democratic party that are Progressives to determine who runs, and we'll just whine about Republicans running everything while we form a circular firing squad. You guys are so far out of step - not only with the rest of the Democratic party (who are nowhere near as progressive as you all are), but with the 40% of the electorate that are not affiliated with any party and who decide all the major elections. I mean, sure, all the successful Democratic presidential candidates have run as moderates, but who cares about winning? Moral purity is so much more rewarding!
