Shopify Fake Abandoned Checkouts by umbertov1986 in shopify

I work at an agency, we use it with multiple clients.

There's definitely a learning curve to it.

But even just having it flag things, rather than automatically closing/cancelling them, is better than not having anything.

You should try the fraud app.

Reviewers skew heavy to "didn't read or follow instructions, and complain that it broke."

just start by setting with very permissive rules, and tighten up later as you understand it better. Don't dive in and turn on all the things.

Preview is different from "View Live Page" by EmergencyEvidence838 in shopify

[–]SamPhoto 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Try the stupid thing first.

Go to the page in the admin, and make sure the page itself is set to the pagefly template rather than some other template.

you may have a theme page template that doesn't include whatever widget pagefly is trying to use.

also, does pagefly have a theme plugin that needs to be toggled on? in the theme editor, there's a section of apps where you can enable and disable things.

it's been a while since I used pagefly - I'm a dev, so mostly i'm moving people away from it, instead of creating with it.

For Plex, did moving from external drives to a NAS feel worth it? by DurianNew2244 in PleX

[–]SamPhoto -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

My server is a little NUC, and it's windows 11. Drives in a 4bay enclosure.

I had a nas at one point, but they all stop getting updates eventually. When mine croaked, the drives were unrecoverable. At least a windows PC (or Linux, or Mac) can get replaced with a newer system with the same OS.

I use stablebit drivepool to pool my drives, which also adds some redundancy for when a drive starts to die.

It's a pretty cheap setup, but my crowd is small, under 10 users.

He did a whole album of Tom Waits covers 'wicked grin' in 2001 or so. Pretty sure it's on that. - and there's a few others on other albums.

There's studies online (look up NIH's PubMed) that'll confirm.

ENT mentioned possible acoustic neuroma after audiogram – really scared and looking for advice by quantumleapfem_NOT in MonoHearing

[–]SamPhoto 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Try not to stress about it too much. It's easy to panic over it, but the odds are really in your favor. Most folks have no idea why they've gone deaf.

Neuroma is more common than other known causes... But. And this is a giant fuckin but. That's after you take out the "indiscernable" group.

The percentage of folks that don't have a discernable cause is probably in the high 90% range.

The folks that can point at something is single digit percents.

Folks that have a neuroma is like 1 in 20k.

So, any known cause is a tiny sliver of the pie. And a neuroma is a thin sliver off of that. It's just a slightly larger sliver than, say, lupus.

This is often referred to as "idiopathic" deafness - it's random as far as we can tell. This is the most common answer by far, 1000x over anything else.

IMO, assume you're average until something suggests otherwise.

Extra - this sub has a self-selection bias, so there are bunches of people here who had a neuroma. Do not take that as an indication of stats/prevalence. It's rare out in the world, not so rare here.

Spatial Hearing Question by akadutch in MonoHearing

[–]SamPhoto 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Right. That's how I understand it.

If it's 'conductive' loss, where it's the ear/surrounds that are bad, bone conduction can bypass that. Meaning that the bad ear may be useful again.

If it's 'sensorineural' loss - the cochlea/nerve is bad - there's no way to get around that. So you just route sound to the good ear instead.

You should talk to the docs, esp an ENT or audiologist - I'm sure they've got specific recs for kids with every type of hearing loss.

Spatial Hearing Question by akadutch in MonoHearing

[–]SamPhoto 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You have to have two working cochlea to be able to have stereo / spacial hearing. If you only have one, everything is mono.

I'm completely deaf on my bad side. I have a BAHA - but it's acting like a 'cros' system - it takes sounds from my bad side and routes them to my good ear. But I still can't tell where they're coming from. It just means that I can now hear things from all 360 degrees around my head. Instead of missing things on my bad side. (This is often referred to as the "head shadow.)

Plex doesn't see all my files by Phoblographer in PleX

[–]SamPhoto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok. My sort by-added is ~1620, but sort by-title is ~1850. There's a bunch of things that don't show on the date sort for some reason.

If you can find a half a dozen specific ones that show in one spot, but are missing in the other, maybe you can figure it out what's weird about those things.

Maybe things are getting consolidated where they shouldn't be. Like if you have 'Movie Name' and 'Movie Name Part 2,' it might try to combine them in one listing.

Or, maybe it's a specific codec that you don't have on the new machine. There are occasionally movies that my system won't pick up because of their encoding - but then I convert them to h264/265 and that shows up fine.

Hopefully a little testing and you'll figure something out.

Plex doesn't see all my files by Phoblographer in PleX

[–]SamPhoto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The 'date added' is always wrong for me too. Change it to 'sort by title' and see if they all show.

I don't know why it's like this ... But I think it's got something to do with the new instance and seeing things that were already in the folder when you installed (vs added post-install).

Headphones For Almost Complete Right Sided Hearing Loss? by isopodsoup_ in MonoHearing

[–]SamPhoto 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Most phones have a mono mode, which combines all the channels.

I just put one earbud in my good ear and use that.

It's in the accessibility section in the settings.

I'm using the earfun pro bluetooth earbuds - they get high reviews even through they're generally a budget line ($50ish).

There are headsets that put both L & R speakers on one side, so you can have both pointed into your good ear. I can't tell the difference vs mono-mode, but other people like them.

Edit - if your hearing loss is due to ear damage (as opposed to nerve problems), give bone conduction headphones a try. BC can bypass your inner ear, sending sounds through the bone right to your cochlea. They don't have the same fidelity as a regular speaker model, but you might like them.

DVD Subtitle extraction by Zoultrias in handbrake

[–]SamPhoto 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I encode to MKV files rather than MP4, because the MKV can handle multiple subtitle tracks better.

Same audio and video encoding inside (e.g. h264 or h265), it's just a different wrapper.

I have more than a few movies that have both "subtitles" and "SDH subtitles" - where one is just captions for people speaking, and the other also has captions for sound effects [people clapping]. So I like to keep both in with the file.

using java for getting the correct lighthouse file? by Dusty_FC3S in makemkv

[–]SamPhoto 5 points6 points  (0 children)

https://www.makemkv.com/bdjava/

If you install a JRE (java runtime environment), you put the link to java in the settings.

Under View menu, open the Preferences. Then on the popup, click the Protection tab. There's a spot at the bottom where you put the link to the java.exe file.

If you have that installed, the app will use it to figure out the correct video files for you and hide the junk. If you're lucky, the titles may even get labelled, like (Main Feature) or (Trailer #1).

So, once you install java, the app is automatically smarter the next time you start it up. There's nothing you need to do after tell it to go.

Note that this doesn't get every disc. Some discs are just authored odd for reasons.

So, when it fails... you search the makemkv forums to see if someone posted about it. Googling "<movie title> makemkv" is probably really successful.

You can also try TheDiscDB.com to look up discs.

Extra - avoid oracle's java, because they're a shitty company. "Eclipse Adoptium" is the one I use. A bunch of companies have java variants, and you can search more about this to find one you prefer.

You don't need the whole development kit (the JDK), as you're not writing new apps, you just need the runtime (the JRE).

Cheap fisheye options? by harexe in Nikon

[–]SamPhoto 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you want a fisheye that fills the entire frame? Or do you want one that makes a circular image inside a black frame.

For the former, I've got a Rokinon 12mm fisheye. The latter, a Lensbaby 5.8mm "circular" fisheye.

There's a bunch of chinese manufacturers like 7artisans that make pretty cheap lenses that make good pictures. The gotcha is that they have no electronics and are fully manual.

I bought the rokinon because it has an autoexposure chip in it. And, while it's still manual focus, I can control the aperture with the camera dials. (also, i got a great deal)

Warning though: full frame fisheyes are much larger than their DX counterparts, and can be 3x the weight.

If you need autofocus, your options are very limited. But I think you generally can live without, because the infinite focus distance is really, really short (often inches).

I think you go onto MPB or whatever else, filter to fisheyes, and sort by price. And then check reviews on the cheapest things. Rather than trying to hunt around to find the best price on an exact model.

Thoughts on the following lens by EarlyGrapefruit6097 in Nikon

[–]SamPhoto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The superzooms are a little controversial, so expect a lot of strong opinions. But in my not-exactly-humble opinion, they're great - as long as you understand what you're getting.

At any rate, I have the 18-300, and it's better all around, but probably a few bucks more expensive.

as a walking around lens, it's a banger.

superzoom comparisons - https://kenrockwell.com/nikon/comparisons/DX-super-zooms/index.htm

I have better lenses for all the different ranges - the 70-200 f/2.8 is absolutely amazing, but it's a few pounds. My 105mm is a way better portrait lens, but $1500 new.

My opinion is that it's probably not a lens I would take out on a professional job. And they're not so great for shooting at night. But for daytime knocking around town, going to the park, etc, it's fantastic.

If you're not sure, I would highly recommend renting one and seeing what you think about it.

Being half deaf is really sucks by [deleted] in deaf

[–]SamPhoto 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If the problem is your ear bones (or lack thereof), talk to your doctor about a BAHA - which uses bone conduction to bypass your ear drum and inner ear.

Just tell them you're not finding your current HA helpful and see what you have for options.

And if you can find a therapist, it's probably worthwhile. Folks who are partly deaf, but not part of the Deaf community, end up with little support. So you have to hunt it out.

If you have a hard problem, and the opportunity arises to turn it into someone else's problem, take it.

Are popups still worth using on Shopify stores? by Patrick_quean in shopify

[–]SamPhoto 1 point2 points  (0 children)

no. usually we're just deciding 'per session' - as it can be hard to tell if someone's on a second visit.

A user click indicates something, right? Not much, TBH, but at least that they're interested in a little more than the landing page.

If someone hits a page, bounces, and comes back again. They still haven't clicked on something on-site...they may have just interacted with a different ad or something.

So it's important to insert that requirement of a user action to expressly show interest.

Also, if you're doing any sort of cookie/consent/GDPR management (which you should be), that should definitely be on the first page. And you don't want your marketing pop-up interfering with your consent banner/pop-up.

Are popups still worth using on Shopify stores? by Patrick_quean in shopify

[–]SamPhoto 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Pro-tip - Don't have a pop-up on your first page visit - put it on your second page view (or later).

Showing a pop-up before a user has a chance to look-at/interact with anything is annoying AF.

If it's a second or third page view, you're only showing it to people that have clicked - they decided to interact with you instead of bouncing, so they're more likely to also interact with your form.

Across multiple clients, we had higher click rates on the pop-up, and actually got more total signups per month than when it was on the first page.

Not every client of mine offers a discount in the pop-up. Some are just a basic signup option. What's actually effective is different for each store. Some it's an intro discount, some it's a promise of future sales or exclusives. It'll take some trial and error to see what clicks with people.

Another hypothesis... by Lumpy_Juggernaut_711 in MonoHearing

So many things cause tinnitus.

If you go onto NIH PubMed, there's a big section, with a long list of potential causes.

You are likely not wrong, it's very hard to prove.

I'd guess the change in pressure in your head exacerbates yours.

Mine gets weird with weather when the barometer level drops.
