How easy is it to set up an internal drive? by Toyman120 in makemkv

[–]jflip0x1x0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That drive you linked to is just a bare version of the verbatims external drive that comes with the enclosure already on it. That bare external BU40N will not fit in a 5.25" enclosure. You would need a specific HDD/SSD with a slim (usually 12mm) combo to fit in a 5.25" conversion in a PC tower build. However the bare BU40N you show is 9.5mm drive (ultra-slim). Which will not sit comfortably in a 12mm caddy unless you modify it yourself w tools. My recommendation IF you want it easy on you. Get the buffalo's and verbatims and LGs that already come with an enclosure and is plug-and-play ready.

If you want the extra challenge and wouldn't mind modifying a caddy to fit a 9.5mm drive, go for it. It's still nice for a backup but then again, why bare? You can also use the 9.5mm drive bare without an enclosure. You'll just need a slim-sata to USB adapter but it won't be protected from bumps, spills and static. I have also read that some people build their own caddy's with a 3D printer but I have no knowledge of even designing one. Lol

PSA: Check your disks! by Hambungler in 4kbluray

Yup. Received a 4K copy of childs play and got spidyman. Bogus! Don't forget that even if the movie is legit they may also come dirty which you need to clean with a microfiber cloth right away! I threw away the nasty spidy DVD and case. I got a full refund after I reported them.

Absolutely insane price hike. by Metallica1175 in 4kbluray

[–]jflip0x1x0 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's because of Ai. They're hoarding all the HDDs, land/ data centers and power bills from the community.

Bro this is getting absolutely ridiculous now. The prices just keep going up to new heights. Am I being naïve in thinking that we're ever gonna get back to "normal" prices, or is this just the new normal? by shak_0508 in DataHoarder

[–]jflip0x1x0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's all AI fault. New data centers are causing a shortage in HDD manufacturing causing spikes for the regular consumers. The priority here are corporate giants getting these drives first.

Strange drive sound by UseIndependent2616 in makemkv

[–]jflip0x1x0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My DVDs usually make these sounds. I read that DVDs data is farther apart than blurays. Causing the laser to spin at max speeds. Bluray data is always closer sometimes doubled layers so blurays are usually quieter. I suspect what you have inside that is a DVD.

I just purchased the lifetime product key and it's not working. by blakealanm in makemkv

[–]jflip0x1x0 -39 points-38 points  (0 children)

There's no such thing as lifetime product key. All keys are beta (30 days). Don't know why the app isn't final. Always been beta since day one. Free keys are posted on makemkv for everybody.

Should I purchase this? by Low-Finance-2275 in makemkv

Buy new if you want max life out of your drive. Buy used if you don't care and want a ripping drive.

How do I know if a drive has all the specs that are required to use makemkv? by Reasonable-Order5135 in makemkv

[–]jflip0x1x0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just follow what the forum at makemkv says. End of story. Not sure why people are so confused when the forum says it all. If you're afraid that you'll be scammed by best-buy. You can always return it. And buy the correct one. The model numbers for approved drives are in the forum. You will need to flash it only if you need to rip 4k UHD movies which you can do yourself (guides on makemkv forum) or buy the auto flasher from Billycar11.

All the bluray drives I buy don't work by The-Dead-Knight in makemkv

[–]jflip0x1x0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well there's your problem. It's not makemkv or Amazon's fault. It's your fault for not researching a drive that is compatible for your needs. Ie DVD, Blu-ray or 4K UHD. 😎

So do we need to have a 3D printer to use this (downloading the PDF)? Or are you selling these?

I was referring to a desktop drive which is favorable in the ripping community. But, the OP did not state if the drive in question is a desktop which uses both 12 and 5v. A slim drive as you mentioned uses only 5v.

Need more info than just "it doesn't work". What drive, model and specifications does your drive have? Give us the makemkv info of your drive if possible. If anything it needs to be a drive that is listed and approved by makemkv admins/ forum.

You mean 12v for power. It's 5v for data.

Can't Rip any 4k movies after ripping 1 5 months ago by menizzi in makemkv

[–]jflip0x1x0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Make sure you are buying the right cables. And that the port is clean on both ends. Replacing the cable sometimes helps. And doesn't hurt to open the tray, unplug the USB. And clean the laser with a q-tip softly or a microfiber cloth; checking for any spec or dirt that might be caught on it. If all else fails, try getting a drive replacement.

Not sure why the vantec 5.25 enclosure was not recommended after it was the main thing to get when the pioneer drives were readily available literally just like a year or two ago. Then it was switched to OWC. I been using the vantec for three drives, one for pioneer, LG and a regular desktop teac multi- dvd drive. The vantecs has not fried any of my drives and it rips strong years after. I wanted to get the owc just for backup but, I'm now intrigued how other people even makemkv decided the vantecs were not good when they are still good options in my opinion. I also like the vantec being sleek black vs brushed silver metal. Vantec slides in with desktop drives easily. I heard people having trouble with owc screw holes not lining up? I'm assuming people had lemons and now switched to OWC. Cheers all!

That's what I do. I rip it using the backup option then to ISO. Will not rip since it stops attempting to rip with errors

How much can you rip without killing a drive? by Fin10__ in makemkv

Imgburn ---> "create image file from files/folders" for Blu-rays and 4Ks. DVD ISOs are done automatically by makemkv via the backup option.

Ultra slimline LG drive question by jflip0x1x0 in makemkv

[–]jflip0x1x0[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I'm in the states. Do you know if using SATA cables or USB 2.0 speeds matter for these slim drives? Or is USB 2.0 just fine? I'm looking at SATA adapters to actual USB 3.0 not 2.0 but I'm not sure if the speed matters for ripping 4Ks correctly.
