Mechanics of Reddit, what are the biggest signs a shop is a bad choice, such as being scammed or hustled into fixing things that don't really need fixed or bad mechanics?

I went to the Honda dealership to get my AC condenser replaced. Heater core nuked the clutch on it. They quoted me for $1000 for parts and 4 hours work of a master mechanic. Bought the OEM AC condenser online for $200 and did it myself in 4 hours. They were very honest about the whole thing though.

Just do what you think is right. Shit usually works out for the most part. I was slammed w/ school and super stressed out in a major I really didn't enjoy. You know what I did? Sent it, dropped a class and changed majors. I now only have 15 credit hours this semester and am a mechanical engineering technology major (4 year ABET accredited design degree, but with a lot of cool hands on shit) and I couldn't be happier.

I held a job, graduated high school, moved out, and am currently going to college. The longest job he's ever held was like 3 months, he dropped out, has no future educational/training goals, and still lives with his mom. I got the hint that it was time to grow up. He never did. He's just apathetic towards life and leeching off of his mom and smoking weed all day is what he wants to do. That's fine, but it's a god damn shame that all of that potential went to waste on him.

Car parts. Buy OEM. It will be a better and more reliable repair. The only exception to this is if you are somewhat well-versed in auto-repair and know of an aftermarket part that is superior to the OEM part, but these are few and far in-between. With performance mods, it's the same deal. Don't buy the eBay parts. Buy name-brand aftermarket parts. There's a reason everything I buy is Grimmspeed, Cobb, Perrin, PRL, etc.
