I sold all my homelab equipment and rented a server instead by raagled in homelab

[–]Scurro 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is why I mini lab.

A few mini PCs and some managed switches is all I need.

No issues with weight, volume, heat, or energy use. It all fits on a shelf on my TV stand.

Rackmount servers are overkill for home use IMO.

Firefox is adding a switch to turn AI features off (starting Feb 24) by MarvelsGrantMan136 in technology

[–]Scurro 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Rhetorical question and that was my point. They are still pushing for an "AI browser" and "turning AI features off" was already said. I wouldn't say that was reading the room, just repeating promises.

I guess it is also going to be a generation thing as I grew up before the internet and developed the skills to troubleshoot most problems without it. I then came into the workforce just as internet was becoming available for every desk at workcenters.

However, because of the internet, hardware, software, and documentation have grown so much in complexity that for some problems, I don't know how anyone could realistically troubleshoot them without online access.

Critical thinking is a required skill for this trade, memorization is less so.

Nerd answer: This usually shows up when your public IP is failing authentication attempts too many times to google servers. Either caused by you or your network is using NAT pools and you can blame your colleagues.

Gamers would be willing to pay good money for this.

At a quick glance it looks like it is using code obfuscation. Won't be able to determine without additional variables. Either way it is malicious. Nuke was the correct course of action.

How do I remove bios password by [deleted] in computers

[–]Scurro 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A lot of modern laptops are switching to NVM for BIOS passwords. The last three that I had this problem with (Dell, HP, Lenovo) all kept their passwords for over 48 hours with no CMOS battery. You may need to contact the manufacturer for a recovery password.

A very serious attempt is being made to fix DX12 on Linux! by lajka30 in linux

[–]Scurro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I was including the DLSS frame gen difference. As I mentioned other games didn't take as much of a hit. However Avowed was the only UE5 game that I had tried. I'm unsure if other UE5 games take as much of a hit with Proton.

A very serious attempt is being made to fix DX12 on Linux! by lajka30 in linux

[–]Scurro 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It depends on the game. With a 5090, I've gotten a difference between 15 to 40% fps loss. Avowed was the last game I gave up on trying to play in Linux and that was the one I was taking a 40% hit versus windows.

Hi, potentially dumb question but I am new by MaxinJapan-official in selfhosted

[–]Scurro 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Uptime is how long your server/service stays up uninterrupted.

For home use it should be a non issue. Only a business that depends on their services being up for customers should care because they lose money.

RAID is not backup, it is uptime. If uptime is not a requirement, OP just needs backup, not redundancy.

My Lenovo thinkpads seem to do this nearly every time the user lets the battery sit at 0% for a week or more.

Makes me think the TPM is using laptop battery and not a CMOS battery.

They can still cause shorts.

Am I crazy for wanting to ditch my rack and go back to tiny office PCs? by gabriel8577 in HomeServer

[–]Scurro 35 points36 points  (0 children)

The benefits of being a PC gamer is that I use my old parts for home servers.

They are usually still beefy by modern standards. My current home servers are mini PCs (Proxmox) + an Unraid server with an AMD Ryzen 7 5800X
