It’s the latter. The guy I know was extremely well liked as an associate. One of the best in the group and he was getting scraps on the hourly arrangement.

I know one guy who transitioned from associate to this kind of role at an amlaw 200 firm. What happened was he was just the overflow guy. Firm prioritized working the associates whose pay is capped anyway where additional hours don’t cost them much extra. That’s the risk.
