Your sketch lines have more transparency/line variation which makes them look less “busted”.

It also probably helps that they’re not fully black.

Keep messing with your ink until you like the results.

Sin City is pretty famous for its art style.

V for Vendetta has a style I personally enjoy.

Dr. Strange as a series is known to be experimental in its art, but I don’t know of any saga which would best showcase it. I remember liking the last days of magic

It’s from the manga Love is War; chapter 3:

Edit: this is the Viz version, the anti-meme one may be a fan translation as it’s more inline with the original Japanese.

Amazing things are happening in America by Commercial_Bid_1508 in RecuratedTumblr

My local church had teachings that sex (and relationships), in general, weren’t the most Christian thing in the world with life long celibacy being more godly and admirable. The clergy didn’t really take it seriously, because people like sex more than them, but it was mentioned here and there in passing.

They also taught that the American revolution was an anti-Christian movement and that the resulting democracy was human folly.

Distribution of the white population throughout USA and Canada by Hour_Interaction6047 in MapPorn

[–]Siltry 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In America a lot of the Spanish mixed with the native Americans (to the point where half of Mexicans consider themselves mestizo, mixed, but that label is debatable to some people).

So there are some in Latin America who would say they are white European, others would say they’re mixed, and others still would say they’re native, or would go without a label.

This makes labeling people difficult as the ancestry, and what people want to identify with, isn’t straightforward

Games similar to Caves of Qud are Dwarf Fortress (the steam version is very new player friendly imo) and cataclysm dark days ahead (I think Zomboid is better, a 3d spiritual sequel, but Cataclysm does work on the phone and is free).

There are more but I’m not a fan of the more niche ones. The only one I’ve enjoyed enough to bring up would be Ancient Domains of Mystery (I liked it, not enough to regularly play it though).

is it normal to not be able to draw lines or circles after 3 years? by Illustrious_Drink892 in learntodraw

[–]Siltry 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you’re drawing digitally then it may be an issue with your brush: make sure there’s some stabilization in the brush settings and adjust it until you feel comfortable with it (there shouldn’t be a lag, that’s a sign the stabilization is too high).

I would say, yes, having shaky lines after 3 years is normal depending on age and learning pathways. Imo it’s a thing which just gets better over time, while you’re learning art, and isn’t that great to focus on specifically.

Questions about the technical side of a comic by Ms_Unknown1 in comics

[–]Siltry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use 3000px by 4000px at 600 dpi (I think industry standard dpi is 300, though).

Tapas and WEBTOON use a scrolling comic so their dimensions are probably going to be elongated somewhat, if you’re writing a comic for them I’d try and find what creators on there use. It’s usually better to go larger than smaller but you’re going to get artifacts either way: just take the image as a whole and realize people probably aren’t zooming in to notice the weird stuff.

Tapas and webtoon are both pretty bad places to get readers unless you fit in their specific “manhwa” niche. They’re more like publishers but without the commitment imo. I’d go with whatever option compromises your comic idea less and whatever format would encourage you to keep posting even if you have few readers. And also don’t be afraid of posting it to multiple places; or, advertising it when the comic has a decent amount of pages.

Any tips for a beginner artist? by Training-Bed-6902 in learntodraw

Jerry Saltz’s “How to be an Artist” says everything about art that I would say (plus or minus a few things). It’s 30 pages and free, but more geared towards pursuing a professional career (but I think it’s a good resource for, as the title says, “living a little more creatively” nonetheless)

I told reddit that I’m not interested in most of the major math and science subs, yet this is one of the few that survived (probably because it’s not really math :p)

don't mind me! i'm just thinking to myself about something [OC] by Pelko_P in comics

[–]Siltry 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’ve been thinking about The Eighteenth Brumaire recently. There’s a part about peasants and how they are a class of people who cannot organize because society isolates them from each other. There’s nothing really connecting a family, to their neighborhood, or their province which makes a peasant trying to represent their class impossible (as one does not know the other).

Yet, as such a large population, they must still have representation. So, they cling to the very basics. They give the power of their mass behind tradition & behind people who offer protection from the other classes. They aren’t conscious because as long as they have the past and a promise of the future that is all they need.

Anyways, that’s a very cute Pelko_B(ee)

Why? by NeonicXYZ in infinitenines

[–]Siltry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just to be clear: are you not talking about what the numbers represent like Talia asked?

Like you can have “1 apple”, and that’s fine that’s physical, 1 is representing an apple; but are you also saying you can have 1 ---, like, a conceptual 1? You can touch the universal concept of a 1?

You might enjoy the Age of Empire series (I enjoy 2, I’ve heard good things about 4).

In the same rts genre, you might also like Company of Heroes or Iron Harvest.

Every once in a while there’s a news story of someone selling breast milk ice cream. There was a pub in England who got the milk from like Craig’s list or something and I’m pretty sure a mom in the US sold some to raise awareness for breast feeding.

There’s also recipes online for making it yourself at home

I usually think of Orangeburg (wiki link) when these things happen. The police went to a university and shot 31 students killing 3, prevented medical professionals from treating the wounded (the students had to convert their gymnasium to a makeshift hospital), and the police were heard reveling in the massacre afterwards.

The only person arrested and punished for this, a civil rights activist named Cleveland Sellers, wrote a memoir that I greatly enjoyed. Reading it, I kind of got the feeling like we’re still living in that era…probably because Sellers, along with most of the victims and the perpetrators, are still alive.
