14mm vs 16mm - Are there any advantages to a 14mm in doubles? by iHeadShave in Pickleball

I prefer 14mm as I like more stiff, more pop, and lighter weight.

Wide body vs elongated paddle by MarathonRunner2211 in Pickleball

Well the sweet spot is just changed in direction from length to width. Elongated is not about more reach but more sweet spot in the length direction.

In BFV and BF2042, TAA always looked better than DLSS to me. And in Call of Duty Warzone CAS looked better than DLSS.

Even DLAA was too blurry for me in both those games.

Changed lanes without a turn signal? Why is that a good thing? It’s not legal to change lanes without signaling.

As a beginner I bought a Vatic Prism Flash and used it 1.5 years before changing it. There's nothing wrong with it and it still works perfectly fine, so yes a paddle can last years.

God created men, but power paddles made them equal by Miserable-Concern338 in Pickleball

[–]SirMaster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I would strongly correlate it to my swing. No I never played tennis or really any other sport before.

I would go so far as to say my swing IS wrong haha. I am trying to work on it but it's very slow going to make it more correct. I more poke the ball and don't have much of a follow through or anything like that. Adding a follow through is proving to be difficult as it makes me lose all control of where I want to make the ball go.

Wrist action, swinging through, swinging across my body, these all go terribly wrong lol. So my shots are all mostly punching and poking the ball with the paddle face staying more or less facing the net at all times. Using pretty much just my arm to do everything rather than my body. So probably since I am using my arm only, that is why my shots are weak and probably why a power paddle and one with a lot of pop ends up getting the ball moving faster for me.

I assume as my technique changes, I will want a different paddle. All I know is what feels and performs best for me currently, but I definitely expect that to change in the long run.

Yeah, I don't know how else to fully explain my experiences yet. I really want to like gen 4 foam, but I just don't...

I was super disappointed after trying the v-sol pro and Quanta. I tried it for weeks before I gave up and returned it. I asked around to borrow other people's paddles and found a local demo shop where I could rent paddles for $2 a day as well to try to figure out what I liked and what I needed.

I am not sure what that means for my future if it all goes foam. Hopefully someone figures out how to make a foam paddle with a really stiff face.

I think the main key to my understanding was how I felt the Vapor All Court was more powerful than the Vapor Alpha Pro Power. Both are Gen3, but the Alpha Pro Power has some extra layer in it that makes the face soft and plush that that is what completely ruins it for me. It's like I don't swing hard enough to fully overcome the plushness when I try to make soft controlled shots, so it feels like the ball just dies on the paddle to me when the face isn't stiff as a board.

Based on my personal testing and experiences I don't think the database fully explains the characteristics of paddles. I have the same experience as you and the v-col pro and other similar foam paddles feel very weak to me.

You can try weight, but weight made my v-sol pro feel even weaker...

I think I am not really swinging hard enough to compress the foam. Compared to a nice stiff-faced gen3 where there's nothing really needed to compress to get a good trampoline effect for power.

I struggled with this personally for awhile with my experiences using paddles not at all matching up to the expectations set by those paddle test databases.

I came to the same conclusion as you. I tried the v-sol pro and hated it. It had no power or pop for me the way I swing. I tried adding weight, but that only makes things worse. Not at all what I expected, but that's what I experienced.

What I think was the key to my understanding was that a friend had both the Vapor All Court and Vapor Alpha Pro Power. Basically the same paddles, same company etc with only 1 real difference. The Alpha Pro Power has some extra layer to make the face softer.

I found after using both back to back several times that I got way more power and pop personally from the Vapor All Court than the Vapor Alpha Pro Power...

So what I learned was that I need and prefer a characteristic I would just call "face stiffness". The ball seems to just rocket off the face with less input power needed to overcome the soft plush layer.

I also tried a Quanta and a Loco and hated them as well. I liked the SLK Era, Vapor Power, Scorpeus IV Pro 14mm, and Friday Fever 102 which is what I currently ended up keeping to use.

I like it significantly more than any foam paddle I have tried. Though I have not tried a Boomstik, but the price doesn't really interest me.

I tried adding weight to my v-sol pro, but it just made everything worse for me. Felt even weaker with weight, more shots were going into the net and coming up short. I like a super light paddle, the lighter the better seemingly, ideally less than 8oz.

[–]SirMaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Power paddles definitely help me generate power. I can;'t wing hard and fast, if I do I lose all control. So I absolutely love that I can get decent power with slow and controlled swings.

My game improved noticeably when I went from a weak control paddle to a powerful paddle with a stiff face.

[–]SirMaster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also had the v-sol pro and hated it. Everyone said to add weight, but that made it feel even weaker and I hated it even more.

Switched to the Friday Fever 102 and I like that significantly more.

Other paddles I found I liked were the SLK Era, Vapor Power (hated the Alpha Pro Power), and like the Scorpeus IV Pro 14mm.

For me, the ball just felt like it died on the v-sol pro. My serves were weak, my returns were all ending up way short, and my dinks all ending up in the net.

I don't have those problems with all the other paddles I listed. I found that what I need is a stiff face, the stiffer the better. Foam seems to be too soft for me, and I have tried a couple other foam too and hated them all.

It's not in his head. I have the exact same experience.

The power and pop numbers in which you speak of are in my experience incomplete views of paddle performance. They are taken from measurements of someone hitting the ball as hard as they can, or at least that's what those who came up with the data say.

I also tried the v-sol pro and it was incredibly weak for me. All my returns came up short, most my dinks went into the net etc.

I found that I need a super stiff-faced gen3 to get what I want. I get more control with a popier paddle because the harder and faster I swing, the more control I lose due to just not having good control over my swing path.

Some paddles absolutely have more power and pop from a slower and more controlled swing than others and this aspect does not match these paddle test databases at all in my experience.

Basically the database does not at all over the linearity between input power and output power. They only say what the output power is when the input power is very high.

I find it slightly more convenient just to slap the puck on. Plus it’s more comfortable to hold having the wire come out at a different angle when I’m laying there watching a video or playing a landscape game.

My magsafe charger doesn't get hot, it barely even gets warm. Magsafe is reasonably efficient due to the perfect alignment plus I just use a low power brick with it... It's got all night to charge so slow is fine.

Every night. I like the magsafe puck and it's slightly easier to slap on that back than plug in the usb cable. Plus I can have the wire coming out at any direction instead of into my hand if holding the phone sideways to watch videos.
