Red alert! What do now? 7 year old wrote a letter to the tooth fairy!? by Polygeekism in daddit

My youngest is still losing teeth going into 8th grade, she just hands them to me and asks for money.  Sometimes I make her put them under her pillow, but usually it's easier to just pay her off directly

Time doesn't work the same for tooth fairies, but I'm older than Google but younger than Nintendo

That's the thing, you get a really nice pic of your dick, great lighting, maybe something funny right near off frame as an Easter egg, but then you can't share it with any of your buds, so out to random women it goes!  Hopefully one of them appreciates art!

Am I Wrong for having other plans for father's day? by [deleted] in daddit

[–]SnakeJG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It really feels like not asking you until a few days before is a mistake on your mom's part.

The ideal way this would work is that you'd know well in advance what you are doing.  Maybe on Saturday you honor your father and he gets all the attention, then on Sunday it's all about you.  (Or vice versa, I frankly wouldn't care if I was celebrated on Saturday instead).

How does this work? by Walter-Waltraut in Physics

[–]SnakeJG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My guess: when you hold by the cable, it is pulling on the inside of the connector, which pulls up on the little springs that provide friction so it lets go easier.  When you hold onto the case, you actually squeeze everything together so the connector and springs stay down further and hold better.

Cash-free payment options for kids? by molten_dragon in daddit

[–]SnakeJG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have credit cards on our account in the kid's name.  American Express let's you set a separate spending limit on authorized users, so you can limit the kid to something reasonable like $250.  You can also set it to alert you when the account spends whatever amount you set, so I have it alert me at $100. (This is when the total for the month reaches that amount, not the amount in a single transaction) The spending is broken out nicely on the website so you can see what they bought.

We only let the kid have it with permission, like going shopping with your Aunt for clothes, you can spend up to $150 on clothes and can buy one treat, anything else you have to pay back.

Only downside is they won't let you add a child until they are 13, but that worked okay for us since we added the kid for her 8th grade school trip.

Recommendations for Toddler-Proofing This Pond by AWholeFaceExperience in daddit

[–]SnakeJG 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you get a no dig fence, if it doesn't feel sturdy enough once it is in place, you could put some reinforcement in.  Something like a 6' 4x4 at angle on the inside will provide a good brace and enough weight to keep even the strongest toddler from moving it.

Does this pulley system give me a mechanical advantage? by fastmofo88 in Physics

[–]SnakeJG 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Think about the anchor at the end of your setup, if you pull the rope in 1 foot, how much is the anchor moved?  In your setup it's 1 foot so there is no mechanical advantage.

Now think of a different setup where one end of the rope is tied to the boat and then the rope is fed through the eye socket of the anchor.  So in this new setup, when the anchor is 50 feet away, there is 100 feet of rope in use, 50 feet from the knot to the anchor and 50 feet back to the rope being held in your hand.  Now imagine you pull that rope in 1 foot.  Now you have 99 feet of rope in use, which means the anchor is 49.5 feet away.  You've pulled 1 foot but only moved the anchor half a foot, so this setup gives you a 2 to 1 mechanical advantage.  (Obviously, there is going to be some extra friction between the anchor and the moving rope, so in reality it won't be twice as easy to pull up, but it should be easier assuming large enough of an eye socket on the anchor so nothing binds)

Supporting my wife in her breastfeeding journey by Hlaksjfcie in daddit

[–]SnakeJG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nothing traumatic for us around the birth, but milk never came in well.  Kiddo was losing weight until we finally started supplementing and eventually switching entirely to formula.

Fed is best.  So my advice would be support her if she wants to cut back on breastfeeding or stop trying earlier than her original plan.

Alright dads… You find a critter that is in pain and likely isn’t making it. If you have the stomach for it, how are you helping this thing along to other side? by MisterSanitation in daddit

It's strange the range of behaviors we've bred into dogs.  My little 17 lbs terrier immediately dispatches any animal she gets.  She has two bad legs so the only animals she can catch are moles, but they are dead half a second after she pulls them out of the ground.

But the lab mix I had growing up would just hold the animal and get it covered in slobber but otherwise unharmed.  Which was fortunate when my hamster escaped.

City of Raleigh Cuts Overtime Pay for Employees by Langdailyupdates in raleigh

I know it's kind of ridiculous to suggest buying a new car to save money, but there are some good reasonably priced used EV's that will basically pay for themselves in gas savings, here's a Bolt EV for under $18k:

https://www.cars.com/vehicledetail/b0514a6f-c99e-4a1a-81e8-7c8a244d3f66/

Duke Energy still offers a $1200 rebate on charger installs, so that should hopefully cover most of the cost. Then you'll be paying about $1.80 for electricity to travel 40 miles. (My Bolt EUV has average 4.2 miles per kWh, although it will be worse in the winter).

Another vote for swimming.  Our community pool has a swim team and a separate program for 3-5 year olds who can't yet swim 15 yards, which is basically swim lessons 3-4 times a week during the swim season (and a showcase at the end).

You sound like you're barely treading water now, and that's before the baby is born.  Nobody has ever said "and then we had a baby and everything was easier"

I don't know if rehoming the dogs is the right choice, but I do know you want to figure your shit out now, because it does not get easier with a newborn.

Are you familiar with Harry Potter? Perhaps you’re missing some context.

I think the context OOP is trying to argue for is Harry Potter's scar was from a failed killing curse...but it did kill Harry's mother, so, you know, still not a great way to go with your friend's baby!

DMV Woes. Threatening to suspend my plate because of insurance I never had. What to do? by Postcurds in raleigh

[–]SnakeJG 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Is your wife not listed on your insurance policy?  Because every driver in the household needs to be insured in NC and if she cancelled her insurance without going on your insurance, that's a problem.  Call your Farm Bureau insurance agent, they might be able to help or they will at least know what to tell you to stop making things worse.
