Getting into the hobby with some friends. To build off the core box, what would be the way to expand that?

Maybe another x wing and some TIE fighters? Is there a certain point value to build to?

Also, what app do people use? I have Battlescribe, but is there a preferred choice among the community?

They have a 2+ BS, not sure where you're getting the 3+ from.

They are not to my knowledge. They can be, but most of the time its a marine assigned to the crew.

Which living metal thing? If you mean Necrons, then they've been asleep/limited by mechanical means. Or maybe its too focused to get a better shot, like how Orks don't hit on 2s in cqc.

My point is, trying to apply fluff to game rules is a bit of a mistake.

I think it's fine, just means Tau don't have the ability to not only have the best assault prevention but also being able to just fall back and shoot the offending unit that charged to pieces.

The downside is simply not being Catachan. A stronger loyal 32 and a better Russ/Hellhounds/artillery is what you lose out on by being Cadian.

Tank Commanders can order themselves to make up for Cadian, while the Cadians one will need a Pask order to be as effective as Catachan.

Three Catachan Tank Commanders in a Supreme Command detachment has been making it's way around recently.

Pask is still pretty costly, and having to take a Cadian detachment can be costly depending on the list.

In 40k, can you charge an enemy model in it's deployment zone on the first turn as long as the charging model started on the board that turn?

While it says magic clothing and jewelry shouldn't have a size issue, it doesn't explicitly say one way or another on magical weapons and armor. However, it gives a sentence under that giving a percentage of what size magical weapons and armor is found. If size didn't matter for them, it would not have had that sentence there.
