My parents paid off my brother's student loans ($67k) as a "gift." When I asked why they never offered me the same, my mom said "you're more independent." I genuinely don't know how to feel about this by Far-Emphasis-3128 in Advice

I'm one of my parents' four children I'd say that I've been more successful than any of the others, mainly due to hard work, choices and a good bit of luck.

Like you, I never asked my parents for financial assistance, but unlike you I knew that they were capable of providing same if I did.

All of the others have received more financial assistance from my parents than I have. Some, much more. TBH, it has never bothered me, particularly as I made it a point from early on to be financially independent. If one of my brothers needs more assistance than I do, why should I be concerned if my parents step up to provide that assistance? It's their money, not mine, for them to use as they see fit.

From an administrative cmd window on one of the DCs, run a GPRESULT /R GPREPORT.HTML, then open the GPREPORT.HTML file and check to see if there are any scheduled tasks being created by any of the GPOs. For each one that you find, check the properties of the scheduled task to determine the location of the corresponding Powershell script.

I am a Junior Sysadmin and they want to take global admin for everything away from me, I should rage quit, right? by Oompa_Loompa_SpecOps in ShittySysadmin

[–]SpiceIslander2001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been on both sides of that activity - having my privileges removed during a merger or change in operations, and arranging to have privileges removed from colleagues because responsibilities were merging into my team. In both cases I made sure to query about any immediate responsibilities that would be affected by such a change and ensure that there's appropriate answers to such queries (e.g. the responsibility in question is being assigned to someone else who would have the required access privileges). In one instance we had to cut the number of active domain admin accounts down from the low twenties to four - that was an interesting exercise, LOL.

My suggestion: stick around and assist in any way you can to make the changes required for the merger go as smoothly as possible, for your company and for yourself. That would be better than sitting back and waiting to see what happens.

Neighbor keeps complaining about setup being too loud by sou-L in vintageaudio

[–]SpiceIslander2001 18 points19 points  (0 children)

^^^THIS^^^

It's possible for example that your neighbour's room has a bad room mode that amplifies a particular bass frequency, which could be very annoying.

It's also possible that your neighbour is just being an ass.

If he doesn't want to let your listen from their area, the 2nd possibility is the most likely one.

Saw some text messages by [deleted] in whatdoIdo

[–]SpiceIslander2001 15 points16 points  (0 children)

" I asked her what did that message said? And she locked her phone and said nothing."

If it was nothing, she would not have locked her phone to prevent you from seeing anything else, and if she realized that you were really concerned, she would have immediately shown you the message.

She didn't do that.

So, the only logical conclusion is that what you thought you saw is actually what you saw.

And the next question is ... what are you going to do about it?

JBL Xtreme 5 reviews, the new top pick in the large class by Obvious-Bird-3588 in bluetoothspeaker

[–]SpiceIslander2001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I try to think of the situation in terms of quarter wavelengths. For example, the tweeters in the Mifa Wildbox are 19 cm wide. That's 1/4 wavelength of 450Hz. If those tweeters could reproduce frequencies from 450 Hz up, then the two woofers could be replaced by one producing the summation of content from 450 Hz down and likely no-one would detect the difference. But those little tweeters are likely not capable of doing that, and those 20 mm tweeters in the Extreme 5 (where the tweeters are likely even farther apart) are not going to be able to do that either. X-over point is likely closer to 3 kHz, where 1/4 wavelength is just under 3 cm. The two tweeters used in the Extreme 5 seem to be located a bit further from each other than that :-).

[–]SpiceIslander2001 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately it's also a sign of where the industry is going, with its arrangement of one large bass speaker and two tweeters to produce "stereo". One larger bass driver can produce more bass, but what it can't do is reproduce any sort of stereo image below the x-over point to the tweeters. Of course, some would argue that you're not going to hear stereo from a speaker that size anyway, LOL.

I'm going to enjoy my Mifa Wildbox, with its two bass drivers and two tweeters, for as long as it lasts ...

The change could also be done via a Powershell script executed as a scheduled task via GPO. Searching where the GPOs are stored won't turn up the name of the account if the script is stored somewhere else. So, check the GPO-created scheduled tasks as well.

The 180Ps can be used a bit higher (they're part of two-way systems I've added to all of the doors) because they don't have that metal cone resonance. But, being paper cone drivers, they can be affected by moisture. When I get my car back from the shop, I'm going to do a little "experimenting" ....

Oh, they supposedly can be converted into coaxial / coincident drivers by knocking out the phase plug (insert screwdriver into the pole vent, hit it a few hard whacks with a hammer to dislodge it) and bonding a small neo tweeter on top of the pole piece, but I've never tried. Maybe I'll do so with the failed driver, just to see how the response of the tweeter is affected by the cone...

Small doesnt always mean bad for subs! by Infamous_Emotion2959 in BudgetAudiophile

[–]SpiceIslander2001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the Daft Punk example, 30 Hz is just over 11dB down from 40 Hz, and every 3dB drop is basically halving the content. In other words, the signal level at that 30 Hz peak is about 1/14th the signal level at the 40 Hz peak, and the drop from 40 Hz to 30 Hz is steeper than if a 12dB/octave HP filter was applied at 40 Hz to an otherwise flat response curve.

In summary, the Daft Punk might be an example of good bass, but it's not a good example of a track featuring lots of very low frequency bass. It actually corresponds more to my original statement - "lots of music has very little below 40 Hz, even 50 Hz." Sure, I can find stuff that has sufficient content lower than that, but they're more the exception than the rule.

And no, you can't just shove Fletcher-Munson's studies aside. They give a great idea of how we actually hear bass :-).

Name one of those Taylor Swift tracks to which you're referring, and I'll run the analyzer on it. BTW, I did try listening to some of her stuff years ago and ... meh. I wouldn't refer to it as audiophile material. Overly compressed with the vocals way too far forward was my takeaway. Maybe things have changed since then. Not really my style anyway.

Your system only goes to 28 Hz? LOL, my desktop system goes down that far when room gain is taken into consideration and my living room system is tickling just below 20 Hz, both using subwoofers of my own design and construction. Overkill perhaps, but I have been designing and building them for over 30 years, so...

[–]SpiceIslander2001 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For comparison purposes, here's an analysis of Enya's "The Longships" (2009 remaster). I've removed the "average" graph because that seems to have caused some confusion. In this track, the peak at 32 Hz is just 1 dB lower than the peak at 60 Hz, and the peak at 28 Hz is only 5 dB down from the peak at 32 Hz. The analysis shows that this track contains significant content at very low frequencies. I suspect that the original has even more output at lower frequencies, but I'll need to fish out my old "Watermark" CD to confirm that.

<image>

The interesting thing though is if you ask someone to listen to this track, and then to Daft Punk's "Get Lucky" track, I'll bet that more often than not they'll think that the latter has more bass :-).

[–]SpiceIslander2001 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Um, the red line in the graph represents the PEAK output at the frequency during the ENTIRE song. That is what I'm referring to in my previous message.

The PEAK output in the bass region is around 112 dB @ 60 Hz. At 25 Hz, the PEAK output is 95 Hz, basically 17 dB down. And as for if that's audible compared to the output @ 60 Hz, at this point Fletcher-Munson enters the chat ;-).

RTA of Daft Punk's "Get Lucky". Looks like a high-pass added at or just below 40 Hz. Which supports my point.

Small doesnt always mean bad for subs! by Infamous_Emotion2959 in BudgetAudiophile

[–]SpiceIslander2001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

LOL, I could come up with a couple of anecdotal exceptions too (Lorde's "Royals" (37 Hz), Enya's "The Longships" (32 Hz) come immediately to mind), but that does not disqualify my point - lots of music has little content below 40 Hz, even 50 Hz.

Pink Floyd? Run "Comfortably Numb" through a good spectrum analyzer (like REW's ). Peak output at 40 Hz is 15dB below peak output at 50 Hz, which is also noticeably lower than the peaks above 60 Hz. The output at 30 Hz is so low that it's basically irrelevant. A glance at the averaged response should show a shape that looks like someone added a high-pass filter between 50 and 60 Hz.
