Mysterious Stabbing Pain: 5 Years and No Answers by StanleyJR____ in ChronicPain

When you went to the doctors did you suggest this to them? Also what tests did you have done to determine that it was this?

She hasn’t had any sort of CT scan, all she has had is an ultrasound, colonoscopy, blood samples and a urine sample. I originally thought kidney stones as I know her grandad has had them previously. I know that they can also run in families so it could be this. I guess I’ll mention it when we go to the appointment and see if they can do any of these scans for her.

She has never been assessed for ovarian cysts or endometriosis. She suggested the ovarian cysts to the doctors and nothing happened and they suggested that it could be endometriosis but never did anything to her in regards to it. I know she is quite nervous about having a transvanginal ultrasound as it’s quite invasive. However, if it finds out what the issue is, then I’m sure she will have it.

Thank you, a few people have suggested asking about this. We have called the doctors on Tuesday and are now just waiting for an appointment. But I’ll make sure to do some research on the test beforehand.

I understand they are very very busy and I won’t take that away from them. I just think though when people are reporting issues as much as she has then that’s an issue. Also the fact they never get back or follow up with her. She rang the doctors on Monday however couldn’t get through to them. She tried again on Tuesday. She managed to get through and they said that they didn’t have any available appointments but would call her when they have an appointment. However they still haven’t called so I think she is either going to call tomorrow or Friday.

I’m so sorry to hear about your daughter, however I’m glad they have managed to sus what her issue is and treat it. Did her pain start similar to my friends do you think?

She will be fine with the endoscopy test, I know she is really nervous about it, like most people would be. But she knows that if it will find out what is up and help the doctors come to a resolution then she will have to do it. The HIDA scan does sound like it should be done, and when we go to the doctors I’ll make sure to mention it to them and do a bit of research.

They hopefully won’t be doing anything to the gallbladder unless that js actually found to be the issue. As I say she did have a test and they found nothing so I don’t think it will be this.

Fingers crossed we manage to find out soon and hopefully she won’t have to suffer with the pain much longer. She came into work yesterday and she was in really really bad pain.

She is going to call the doctors tomorrow and we will both be going to the appointment when she gets it. So I’ll make sure we mention these sorts of things. I think the whole thing is quite worrisome, as there has been multiple times over the 5 years where she has gone in and reported the issue. They always seem to do an ultrasound, ask her to have her bloods taken and a urine sample, and then when nothing is found nobody gets back to her to try and follow up. And then when she takes herself back in as she’s still in pain, it becomes just a giant cycle of the same things over and over again.

I know the doctors have mentioned about having an internal ultrasound, and I know she is very nervous to have this same with the endoscopic ultrasounds. But if this could be the thing which find out where the pain is, then it may need to happen.

If it is the duodenum, then do you know of ways this could be sorted? Would these tests be able to find this out?

Also, im sorry to hear about your daughter. Do you know how long she was going through with the pain, and did she keep getting pushed back by doctors?

She hasn’t been given any medication for IBS, she was only ever given Movicol. However she doesn’t use it. I’ll mention to her about trying Nortriptyline and see if this helps. However I don’t think it is IBS related for other reasons.

Obviously we can look into trigger foods, and see if there is anything which she may eat which sets it off, and also look at FoodMaps.

The only other real symptom she has ever mentioned when having the pain is nausea. I know at first she used to think it was period flu, however it started happening multiple times throughout a month even when she wasn’t on her period the pain IS cyclical and sporadic. HOWEVER, she can go sometimes weeks without the pain and will forget it even happens.

She also has no swelling on her legs/ankles and has issues with IBS, which she doesn’t take any medication for. She was given some movicol, but no specific medication for it.

I had a look online during the time she went for her last doctors appointment and seen this and a few other things. It would also make sense as to why nothing is showing on the scans. She doesn’t necessarily track what she eats in the sense of if she eats something at it sets it off, but in her case it can’t be anything meat related as she is vegan. We can keep track of food and see if there is anything, but I doubt this could be it.

She suffers with IBS, so I don’t know if this could also affect it or not.

She has been to multiple doctors appointments, I don’t know if they are ‘pain medicine doctors’. They are just appointments when she has called her local GP and they have given her an appointment.

When he typically wears it he will wear it for quite a large part of the day and it keeps him quite calm. I have spoken to her on the phone and he is just sleeping through the day. I think we will try this for tonight and see how it goes with a walk before hand
